Subject: Cassette Singles

OK, I'll admit that I collect 'em. Though I currently have about 50. Ranging from the late '80's to mid '90's.

A couple I have are from INXS, Depeche Mode, Bel Biv DeVoe, Erasure, and some others I have in a box.

I think they came around in the mid '80's and went out around 1997.

If I can get them to you with no loss to me, you can have my 50 or so too.

I probably had over 200 at one time. In high school I used to work for a Sam Goody-based chain called Musicland and we'd get promo cassingles every week. I loved buying the Maxi cassingles, too. I got rid of them once commercial and promo CD singles became available.

I remember CaSingles, that's what we called them at the record shop I worked in.
I used to HATE them, so much work alphabetize them just to have so many little kids scramble them up.
Like so many places, the only tapes the customers had direct access to was the casingles, the casingles were sometimes the only music some of the younger kids could afford, so that bin was always a mess. And the profit margin on them was nil for us.
The quality of them was suspect too, remember a lot of them coming back with broken tape.
I always thought they wern't worth the trouble for the 99 cents to $1.79 they went for...

The cassingle was born for obselescence.  The CD push was gaining strength by the late '80s, and record companies were doing their best to phase out vinyl.
Remember how a given album would give you two bonus tracs if you bought the cassette, and three if you bought the CD?  The cassette single let record companies ditch the 7" single, and, to a lesser extent, the 12".
Once everybody had a CD player, they could phase out the cassette single.
Full-length commercial cassettes are still around.  I don't know how many releases are on the medium, nor who's buying them.
For my money, the CD single isn't worthwhile.  Maybe it is if you're into RPM or hip-hop and want the "mixes."  They haven't managed to make CD singles feel substantial and appealing, like the old 12" singles.
Remember the 3" CD single?  Record labels quickly realized they were a waste of money.  It's easier and cheaper to just print everything on standard CDs.  Some artists have them printed for novelty's sake.  I have only ever purchased two.  One was a reissue of the first Front 242 single, "U-Men."  I got rid of this one when Epic released "Geography" with the b-side tracks.  Recently I purchased a 3" from Muslimgauze called "Drugsherpa."

I remember when those 12" vinyl singles were popular. I was about 13-14 then, & my weekly allowance was like $10. So usually every week I would buy a 12" single for $5, & spend the rest at the arcade. The 12" singles of course usually came with the "radio edit", "extended version", & maybe a "instrumental version" of the hit song, & of course some had a different song on the B side...but some didn't.
I still have all my singles...around 40 12"s, about 25 cassette singles, & around 50 45s  :)

I also have a couple, like about a dozen, of 12" vinyl singles from Taylor Dayne, Lisa Lisa & Cult Jam, and  ,dare I say, Debbie Gibson.
And 26 LPs that were once given a few years ago by one of my teachers. "Dark Side Of The Moon" (Pink Floyd), "Freedom of Choice" (Devo), "Let's Dance" (David Bowie), "Billy Idol" (self titled), "Never Mind The B :-Xllocks..." (Sex Pistols) were some of the classics. And then some I own like "Black Celebration" (Depeche Mode), "Thriller" (Michael Jackson), "Pyromania" (Def Leppard), "Beauty & The Beat" (The Go Go's), "Control" (Janet Jackson), "Rio" (Duran Duran), to name a few.  8)

Stop collecting when I noticed that there's not enough space.  :P

We're the opposite. We're slowly selling off our CD's when or if we find a vinyl copy of the same albums! We have around 550 LP's, 12 inches, and 7 inches and probably only a couple hundred CD's. We have a great turntable and we're trying to keep the vinyl format alive!

As for cassette singles...I didn't really buy them much so I only have a few, and they're collecting dust.

Absolutely Vile

A friend of mine has a nice turntable and I have an audio CD burner and we spent a Saturday a couple weeks ago burning his vinyl on to CD.  He has presered his vinyl nicely and they sounded brand new.

There's something that is really cool about putting a needle on the record.  From a convenience and storage standpoint, they are a real pain though.  CDs are much more durable.  But like I said, there is something about vinyl...  :)

I have a few cassette singles still.  They were post vinyl/pre CD for me.  My favorite was "Punk Rock Girl" by The Dead Milkmen.

I agree.  As well, there are special qualities about film that digital media will never duplicate.
I used to have a sizable vinyl collection, but as my worldly possessions buried me, I had to make some decisions.  I found the maintenance of a turntable, and the cleaning and care of vinyl to be burden.  The equipment and the records also took up too much darn space.
I gradually replaced my vinyl with CDs and CD-Rs.
I still enjoy playing records at my radio station, but I'm glad I don't have to worry about all that stuff!

Good riddance to cassette singles/tapes >:(
They were a pain in my azz...   The tape decks would eat them up, or the tape itself would get off track and I would try to use an ink pen to turn the gosh darn thing.  Better yet, a friend would borrow it (in perfect condition) and return it all screwed up.

I have to admit I still have the following on cassettes :-/

Depeche Mode
Orgy
Erasure
Thompson Twins

Right on.. i've talked to many people who are doing the same thing except they're still keeping the CD's for travelling, etc.

I only have two singles tapes: one by Great White I got for allowing their ladies to park in an area they weren't supposed to  ;).

And the other tape I got was by Yello and it had regular and extended versions of "Oh Yeah" and "The Race".  This tape was a promo and only available if you bought a new Eagle Talon (1991).
