What bands/artists you don't lsten to ,but respect.

I always thought John Mellencamp was a little low brow. But his newest hit is pretty good. I wish I knew the name of it. ...something like "Your Life is Now" (Part of the refrain, anyway).

Someone I never really liked but respected is Metallica. Excellent musicians, but Hames Hetfield's voice goes through me like bad meat through an old lady! :-/

Kinda' the wrong decade, but I would have to say Rush.
I'm a musician that thinks that Rush sucks. But I wish that I sucked as good as they do. Wait............. umm.............. musicaly, I don't like their songs, but I respect their talent.............
Ok, I'm going to bed now.

I like those groups too! It must be a pattern. :D I never ever considered The Smiths to be "new wave" because I've always considered "new wave" to be more synthy. (I know it's not really. It's more a mishmash of different styles of music incorporated together by a pop band to create this whole new style of music.) The Smiths were neither, but Morrissey's brilliant lyrics + Johnny Marr's fine guitar playing = one damn good pop band. :)

Oh, that was just one song! And anyway...he didn't preach veganism. He's not even a vegan himself. He's a vegetarian talking about vegetarianism. :P Hey...it works for me! ;D
Absolutely Vile

The Smiths were rather anti-New Wave, no synths and no videos (at least not for the first couple of years of stardom), but they weren't retro either. Morrissey/Marr created a unique rock sound with rich lyrics, intricate stylings, and a healthy dose of English folk music incorporated. No one has duplicated it since, not even Morrissey or Marr!
Morrissey was indeed no vegan. His favorite snack was a "cheese sandwich." And it is to his credit that he kept preaching to a minimum, otherwise he'd turn into--uggghh--Moby!
:P

i stand corrected on the vegan remark.
i spent the last hour listening to what smiths songs i can find...sorry. 'how soon is now' is the only song i like. i know, i'm pathetic :-[

I know they were 70s, but 80s as well....
ABBA
I cannot stand them, but I have to respect them for being able to sing as well as they did and have absolutely no idea what the hell was going on or what they themselves were saying.
C'mon now.... how can one not like Dead Kennedys?
maybe I'm just biased because I'm friends with Jello. :)

I love
JELLO
The subjects, lyrics, and politics of DK songs were definitely my bag. I'm just not a fan of the punk rock sound. That's why I'm grateful for Jello's spoken word career. I saw him speak a couple of years ago. The guy has boundless energy. He was on stage going at it for over three hours. He only stopped because, well, he was out of time. I guess he built a lot of stamina going on stage night after night with DKs.
On the Jello vs. DKs, I'm on Jello's side. I'm sick of seeing great songs sold out to TV commercials. "London Calling" for Jaguar? Come on! I think it was shameful for the band to do a tour with the "Courtship of Eddie's Father" guy at the mike, the "fake Dead Kennedys," as Jello called them.

Probably Sade and Tina Turner. I did like Tina's song "I Don't Wanna Fight" but that was 1993. Sade has always been beautiful and she don't need to dress up to be sexy in order to sell records(ala Britney Spears/Madonna, you know look glamarous with all the make-up.) Sade's beauty is all natural. That song "Ordinary Love" touches me: that came out in 1992. I like a few other songs by her but not much.
