Yeah, I know this has been done before but I absolutley loved this topic!!!New members can leave their input this way too!!
I mean, come on....
What hot blooded Duranie can honestly say that she doesn't go absolutley insane when she sees a picture of Nick Rhodes circa Arcadia?
I know I do, but that might be just me.
Anyways....
Here's a couple of guys who I think are absolutley gorgeuos in make up...
Adam Ant
Nick Rhodes
Gary Tibbs(an Ant) ;)
Terry Lee Mail (another Ant)
David Sylvian
John Taylor
David Bowie
Ok, there's more but I think I should stop to momentarily wipe the drool off my keyboard....
So share your opinions and feel absolutley free to put up a picture of the painted man/men that make your mouth water, your body heat rise, and your heart go "Gu-Gong"!!

I dabbled in make-up a bit in my New Wave/New Romantic phase. Almost got myself killed! It's fine in the sophisticated city, but in the suburbs, "that kinda stuff don't go 'round here, boy!"
BTW, in this campaign season, you'll hear pundits talk about "middle America." Remember
when they say "middle America,"
they mean,
"that-kinda-stuff don't-go-'round-here-boy America"
;D

I mentioned Robert Smith in the old thread. He isn't what I would say glamourous in makeup, and I don't think it made him sexy. It certainly made him unique though. Thing is, he still does it, though, and it just doesn't look good anymore. But then again, so does Martin. (Well, eyeliner anyway, I think.) Speaking of which, here's another pic. Last one, I promise! ;D

It's been a few years since I dabbled, but, yes, I used to wear quite a bit. At one time (late '70s, early '80s) I always wore kohl eyeliner and often mascara (this was before Duran and Adam, I'll have you know!). Usually I wore sepia eyeshadow too for that dark, sultry look. I also wore black nailvarnish most days. Hardly ever wore lipstick (didn't like the taste) or rouge (made me look like a clown). But my eyes were spectacular....! :)

I personally have a file chock full of Adam Ant and another one full of Duran Duran(mostly Nick :-*). I mean so full I had to sort through them by the year they were taken, so one file turned into 6 or 7 folders of just Nick! Then I have a file FULL of John Taylor and another one of David Bowie!! I don't think adding another one would hurt! Anyone disagree? There is no such thing as too much eye candy if you ask me!!

I guess I was deeply influenced by the Glam Rock thing that we had in the '70s in the UK (T. Rex, Bowie, The Sweet etc.) - I always thought that the New Romantics were like "Glam 2". In fact, Adam Ant bore more than a passing resemblance - both in his appearance/style and the way he performed - to Marc Bolan of T. Rex, who was probably the ultimate Glam Rock artist.
It was much more shocking for a man to wear makeup back in those days - which was no doubt another reason why I wore it! ;)

But you need one or the other to complete the look! Otherwise it just doesn't look right. I don't taste lipstick when I wear it. Don't lick your lips! :) And rouge (or blush) can look good if it's applied properly. I'd use the powdery stuff, not the pasty goo if that's still around. That stuff was hard to apply and did make one look like a clown! :)

I remember reading an interview with Julian Cope in which he credited his sense of style to Pete Burns. In the early days of Cope's career, Cope claimed, Burns taught him "how not to look like an uncool jerk." Go figure.

To be fair to George, in the 2nd picture he's made up to play the part of his '80s friend, Leigh Bowery (for the musical, Taboo), who really did look like that. George actually looks OK these days, I think. Much better than poor old Pete Burns.
The funny thing was, Pete Burns always portrayed himself as the butch face of genderbending back in the '80s (deep Liverpudlian speaking voice, married) - and now look at the poor guy.... ::)

I don't think they should. It's much easier for a guy to get away with wearing make-up and look good, handsome and all that when they are younger because when young, the face is smoother and the make-up looks smoother. The sense of style is also fresh and vibrant.
When a guy ages, the face no longer holds those qualities suitable for proper make-up application. The skin folds, sags, wrinkles and the texture is much drier; not to mention the years of shaving causing skin roughness. The sense of style that was once fresh is old, worn and tired.
It is my opinion that these guys should let the fans remember them as they were and that they perform make-up-less in order to do themselves justice in the way of keeping some dignity in their aging image and embrace how far they've come along.

Yeah a lot of those cheesy 80's hair metal bands wore makeup: KISS (OK, they wore their make up in the 70's and took it off in 1983), Poison, Motley Crue, etc. But these guys still tried to be macho doing it, so they ended up looking ridiculous. The ones who really pulled off wearing makeup well were the ones who showed off their feminine side. Not necessarily acting like ladies, but a lot less macho than the metal guys tried to act.
