Subject: Anybody remember "Friday Night Videos"?

Written By: thegreatnorthern on 02/29/04 at 10:49 a.m.

Was this before Mtv? All I remember is desparately passing around the 2liter of Coke with other little girls trying to get a caffeine buzz that would carry us to midnight when it aired...

I used to watch Friday Night Videos all the time. I would tape it, I think at one time I had about 5 tapes full of videos. Man I wish I had them now.
I never had cable when I was a kid so this was the only videos I could see.
It started in 1983 and ran until 1994.

Does anyone remember Video Music Machine on Saturdays morning? Some guy named Dallas hosted it.

I remember it too!  I also didn't have cable, so that was my way of seeing the videos.  I audio taped one, with Jon Cain and Neal Schon..I still have it.  Not as good as a video..but we didn't have a VCR then either ( I was so deprived!  ;))
I also remember vaguely the Sat. show.

I think it ran until a bit later because I remember watching videos from Fiona Apple, Blink 182, and (Blechh) Kid Rock on NBC after Conan O'Brien.

Or that was another show because it also included stand up comedy bits & sketches featuring the host, which  I don't remember  her name.

I remember Friday Night Videos.  I had MTV, but I had a couple friends that lived in areas where cable wasn't available yet.  Whenever I would be at their houses on a Friday night, we would watch it.  One cool thing about the show was that it was a real network and not a cable channel, so you could see a lot of videos there world premiered that showed up on MTV the next day.  Of course MTV was the ultimate source for music videos, but that show packed alot into an hour and a half.

I didn't have MTV growing up so I would watch Friday Night Videos if I could stay up late enough. We also had a couple local shows that would feature videos on Saturdays and then of course there was America's Top 10 with Casey Kasem. That was my video exposure in the 1980's.

I also remember how the syndicated stations would air an edited version of the MTV Video Music Awards every year usually a few weeks after MTV showed it. Ironically, after I finally got cable for myself about ten years ago is when MTV started going down the tubes; now I watch VH1 more often.

I liked FNV too. I had MTV, but I watchd that show too. It was great that they had it, especially for people who didn't have cable.

I lived out in the boondocks so we didn't have cable.  I loved this and some other channel that played videos 24/7/365.  Anyone else in the Chicago area remember the channel?  I think it was 60 or 66? ??? :-/

I also remember a uhf station that played mostly music videos.  8)

It played Dire Straits, Phil Collins, Peter Gabriel, Janet Jackson, The Cure, and some others up until the mid 1990's.

I don't know that ever happened, but I  doubt that it's still on air.

I LOVED Friday Night Videos! We did not have MTV because MTV was not part of the basic cable package in Pleasantville NJ yet and my foster mom was a senior and could only afford basic. I think that NBC(the network it aired on)has always had the coolest pop/rock music shows(remember HULLABALOO and the MIDNIGHT SPECIAL,anyone?) And the Peacock Network had stuff like MIAMI VICE!!

Friday Night Videos- loved it! I  still remember the cool animated opening to it, it was an animation of a man figure tied to a big LP record and he breaks free.. or something like that..

In the Philly area we had Video Rock on UHF - which played videos , it came on around 11pm during the week I think.

Wasn't he tied to a giant pencil? I think their point was he was attached to his school life/career,and now that the show was on,he could watch music videos, and "escape" from his dull, and stressful 9-5 existence. Does anybody agree with me, or did I read too much into the animated intro?  ??? Thanks for the memories! Sincerely,Steve.

I used to love Friday Night videos! They were my way of seeing all my favorite videos in the 80's. Sometimes I would fall asleep and wake up and it was already over. I hated when I did that. :( ;D

Most definatly!  I babysat for someone who was rich enough to have HBO, that was my first exposure to "Dancing In The Dark" and "What's Love Got To Do With It".
I loved Night Flight, ahhhh, the good ol' days of just videos. Miss them!
