This is a good one!  The Cars, who were known for their quirky lyrics did one of my favorite 80s songs, "Lust For Kicks."

He's got his plastic sneakers
She's got her Roebuck purse
He's got his butane flicker
She's got it worse
They're crazy about each other
Like a misplaced fix
They're mad about each other
They blame it all on the lust for kicks

Subject: Hmm...Butane flicker?

Oh, these are great lyrics.  Sordid and great indeed! ;D

Quoting:Soft Cell
It's a Mugs Game

Oh God, It’s another night
And your head is feeling like a lump of lead
You should never have drunk those party fours
You should have been home being good instead
And the feeling of deja vu in the end
Is the same and again
You ran out of your silver things
And you’re trying to be so high class
But you need a bath
And you hair is looking like string
And though you’re nearly broke
You end up paying for all the drinks
And you tell them “Oh, it’s nothing.
There’s a million where those came from.”
And then you whisper
To your longest suffering friend
“Please lend me a few quid.”

Oh God, It’s another day
And your stomach is feeling like a blown up balloon
You should have never eaten that greasy food
The doctor told you that chili is bad for you blood
And your standing at the chemist as food’s
Coughing up your guts like a rap at the door
And all this for a packet of Dojo’s
And the assistant gives you a wink
And you turn bright red
It’s at times like this that you wish you were dead
And you take the whole packet
And you feel like you drunk a bottle of bleach
And you tell yourself “never, never again.
Not until next week anyway.”

You were never one for holding drink
And you stagger off to the toilet
And you throw up like it was Christmas
And you miss the bowl
And you hit your shoes
And there’s no paper towels
What else can go wrong with you
It’s a choice between a cab fare home
And a packet of cigarettes
So you choose and the money sticks in the machine
And the manager says “Tough sh*t.
Drink up and leave”

Oh God, It’s another disease
And you just got rid of the last
You were beginning to feel okay
And the friends you gave it to
Were speaking to you again
You find yourself having sex in the back of a car
And the girl underneath doesn’t care
And her chewing gum is getting stuck in your hair
And your nearly there and she still doesn’t care
And there’s something wrong
Something that you’ve forgot
Oh, sh*t you’ve forgotten the rubber
And you don’t want a kid
Well, deny it was you
Oh Chr*st, if your dad finds out
Then he’ll make you stay in
And do you homework and cut your hair
And wear your school uniform out in the street
What a fate worse than death

Oh well, he can’t hit you
You can hit him back
And play your records so loud
All the ones that he especially hates
Deep Purple in rock, Led Zeppelin too
Well even you hate those
Well, on second thought
I think I’ll leave home and go and live in America
Because they earn more money there
And you can get away with murder

Oh, it’s a mug’s game
I can’t wait ‘til I’m twenty-one
And then tell them all to sod off

(I think it’s silly)End Quote

I love the lyrics, but what exactly is a "mugs game," and what are "Dojos," as in "a packet of Dojos"?

Here are some of my personal favourite lyrics by a couple of geniuses:

From "Blasphemous Rumours" by Depeche Mode:

"I don't want to start any blasphemous rumours, but I think that God's got a sick sense of humour, and when I die, I expect to find him laughing."

From "Never Let Me Down Again" by Depeche Mode:

"Promises me I'm as safe as houses as long as I remember who's wearing the trousers."

From "Meat Is Murder" by The Smiths:

"This beautiful creature must die. This beautiful creature must die, a death for no reason, and death for no reason is murder."

From "I Know It's Over" by The Smiths:

"It's so easy to laugh. It's so easy to hate. It takes strength/guts to be gentle and kind."

"Unloveable" by The Smiths (entire song)

"Half A Person" by The Smiths (entire song)

"That Joke Isn't Funny Anymore" by The Smiths (entire song)

"How Soon Is Now?" by The Smiths (entire song)

And a perfect line for this messageboard...

From "Heaven Knows I'm Miserable Now" by The Smiths:

"In my life, why do I give valuable time to people who don't care if I live or I die?"

I could go on and on...:)

Absolutely Vile

These Depeche Mode lyrics were just running through my head:
It Doesn't Matter
"Though we may be the last in the world, we feel like pioneers, telling hopes and fears to one another..."

I love all Smiths lyrics, except "Meat is Murder."  That songs smacks too much of PETA for me.  Anyway, Martin Gore is also a vegetarian, but Alan Wilder confessed to eating no vegetables at all....

I was just thinking of "I Know It's Over," doing the morose Morrissey voice, "And as I climb into an empty bed, Oh well, enough said..."
"Girl Afraid" is a great song because its lyrics fit so seamlessly with the music, and they're relatively simple compared to other Morrissey lyrics.  Very succinct.  I've italicized my favorite phrase...

Quoting:
GIRL AFRAID
Girl afraid
where does his intentions lay?
Or does he even have any?

She says:
"He never really looks at me
I give him every opportunity
in the room downstairs
he sat and stared
in the room downstairs
he sat and stared
I'll never make that mistake again!"

Boy afraid
prudence never pays
and everything she wants costs money

"But she doesn't even LIKE me!
and I know because she said so
in the room downstairs
she sat and stared
in the room downstairs
she sat and stared
I'll never make that mistake again!"
End Quote

For the record, I always thought it was "Leopress."

Quoting:The actual lyrics are "sure as Kilimanjaro rises like Olympus above the Serengeti".End Quote

Never mind that a female Leopard is called a "Leopardess."
:-[
I think it's silly to describe the majesty of one great mountain by comparing it to the majest of another great mountain.  Kilimanjaro doesn't rise quite like Olympus anymore. Its ice cap melted away.  But don't worry, it signifies nothing about the state of our ecology, and Kilimanjaro didn't need that dumb old snow anyway.

I agree with you Smiths fans out there :D

Especially with 'Half A Person' and 'I Know It's Over'. I'm going to add 'Never Had No-One Ever' and 'Hand That Rocks The Cradle' (probably my favourite song by them atthis present moment! - it's ever-changing!)

Some more fav lyrics from the 80s -

"Now you’re fine, I’m not ok, and I can only stay away, I can only kneel and pray, try and try to forget that day’’ (Go Go's - Forget That Day)

"The love I gave hangs in sad coloured mocking shadows.’’ (Jam – Bitterest Pill)

"Time is short and life is cruel, but it’s up to us to change’’ (Jam – Town Called Malice)

"And if it wasn’t for the music, I don’t know what I’d do’’ (Indeep – Last Night a DJ Saved My Life)

"Who’s gonna pay attention to your dream, who’s gonna plug their ears, when you scream? You can’t go on, thinking nothing’s wrong’’ (Cars - Drive)

"I remember searching for the perfect words, I was hoping you might change your mind’’ (Berlin - The Metro)

There are so many more but can't think right now!!

Another great Depeche Mode song! I know there are loads more, but the two I mentioned really stuck out for me. "A Question Of Lust" pretty much tells the story of my relationship life, and "World Full Of Nothing" holds some personal meaning as well.

Quoting:I love all Smiths lyrics, except "Meat is Murder."  That songs smacks too much of PETA for me.End Quote

Then it's probably no surprise to you that Morrissey is a staunch supporter of PETA. :) I'd be lying if I said that "Meat Is Murder" didn't have a small part in my decision to stop eating meat. It wasn't the only reason, but it certainly helped. The song really affected me.

Quoting:Anyway, Martin Gore is also a vegetarian, but Alan Wilder confessed to eating no vegetables at all....End Quote

Good to know that my two favourite singer/songwriters are both vegetarians!! Actually I knew that about Martin, but I don't think he's as strict as Moz. Martin eats fish, I think, and Moz doesn't. As for Alan...he should have learnt a thing or two from Martin! :)

Quoting:I was just thinking of "I Know It's Over," doing the morose Morrissey voice, "And as I climb into an empty bed, Oh well, enough said..."

There are sooo many Smiths songs I could have mentioned which all have great lyrics: "The Hand That Rocks The Cradle," "Suffer Little Children," "Pretty Girls Make Graves," "The Headmaster Ritual," "Barbarism Begins At Home," "This Night Has Opened My Eyes" ("And I'm not happy and I'm not sad..."), and my favourite Morrissey solo song, "November Spawned A Monster." Morrissey's just absolutely brilliant, especially when he was with The Smiths. I could cite almost their entire catalogue as being excellent, with a few exceptions. He is that much of a genius. :)

Oh, I laughed so hard I almost cried! I never even thought of that, and MaxwellSmart's right-a female leopard IS a leopardess which, incidentally, has a lot more business being in a song like "Africa" than Mt. Olympus does! I'm curious about what a packet of "dojos" and a "mugs game" are too. Maybe you should pop over to the "Playful Penguin Place" and ask one of the Brits-I bet they'd know...

There are so many great lyrics -- where to begin?
Of course almost every Smiths and Depeche Mode song gets me, lyric-wise.

But I am always impressed when a pop song also has amazing lyrics.  That's why I love so many songs from the 80s.

Such as Tears for Fears' "Everybody Wants to Rule the World":
"I can't stand this indecision
Married with a lack of vision"

I quite like Neil Finn's (Crowded House) lyrics to "Don't Dream It's Over," which still resonate today:
"In the paper today tales of war and of waste
But you turn right over to the T.V. page

and also from that song:
"There is freedom within, there is freedom without
Try to catch the deluge in a paper cup..."

Often overlooked in discussions of gread DM songs:

Quoting:
Depeche Mode
Here is the House
Here is the house
Where it all happens
Those tender moments
Under this roof
Body and soul come together
As we come closer together
And is it happens
It happens here in this house

And I feel your warmth
And it feels like home
And there's someone
Calling on the telephone
Let's stay home
It's cold outside
And I have so much
To confide to you

With or without words
I'll confide everything

Here is the house
Where it all happens
Those tender moments
Under this roof
Body and soul come together
As we come closer together
And as it happens
It happens here in this house

So we stay at home
And I'm by your side
And you know
What's going on inside
Inside my heart
Inside this house
And I just want to
Let it out for you

And I feel your warmth
And it feels like home
And I feel your warmth
And it feels like home

Here is the house
Where it all happens
Those tender moments
Under this roof
Body and soul come together
As we come closer together
And as it happens
It happens here in this houseEnd Quote

Lyrics so simple and tender deserve great music, and they got it! "Here is the House" is one of their catchiest tunes.

In the great B-sides Hall of Fame:
The Smiths, "Jeane," lyrics not by Morrissey, but delivered as only Morrissey can!

Quoting:
JEANE (SHAW) Lyrics

Jeane
The low-life has lost its appeal
And I'm tired of walking these streets
To a room with its cupboards bare

Jeane
I'm not sure what happiness means
But I look in your eyes
And I know
Oh ...
That it isn't there

Oh, we tried, and we failed
Oh, we tried, and we failed
We tried and we failed
We tried and we failed
We tried

Oh, Jeane
There's ice on the sink where we bathe
So how can you call this a home
When you know it's a grave ?

Yet you still have that greedy grace
As you tidy the place
But it will never be clean
Jeane

We tried and we failed
We tried, and we failed
We tried and we failed
We tried and we failed
And we tried

Oh ...
Cash on the nail
It's just a fairytale
Oh ...
And I don't believe in magic anymore
Jeane

But I think you know
I really think you know
Oh ...
Oh yes, I think you know the truth
Jeane

Oh ...

No heavenly choirs
Not for me and not for you
Because I think you know
I really think you know
Oh ...
I think you know the truth
Oh, Jeane

We tried, and we failed
We tried, and we failed
We tried and we failed
We tried and we failed
We tried
(lyrics: Sandy Shaw)
End Quote

The Toto's "Africa" topic may be better suited to the "Am I Right?" page, but while we're on the subject, a friend of mine thought the word was not "Olympus" or "Leopress," but "Empress."  Plausible, but still wrong.
I've never heard of a female leper called a "lepress," but there's always a first time. LOL!

I think a lot of Duran Duran, Depeche Mode, David Bowie, and the Ants lyrics are really good.

I have also just started listening to Roxy Music and I love some of their lyrics....

Dance Away:
Yesterday - well it seemed so cool
When I walked you home, kissed goodnight
I said it´s love you said all right
It´s funny how I could never cry
Until tonight and you pass by
Hand in hand with another guy
You´re dressed to kill and guess who´s dying?
Dance away the heartache
Dance away the tears
- dance away
Loneliness is a crowded room
Full of open hearts turned to stone
All together all alone
All at once my whole world had changed
Now i´m in the dark, off the wall
Let the strobe light up them all
I close my eyes and dance till dawn
- dance away
Now I know I must walk the line
Until I find an open door
There was I - many times a fool
I hope and pray, but not too much
Out of reach is out of touch
All the way is far enough

Thats just my humble opinion, and there are tons of lyrics that I would love to actually post up here but that would literally take me forever!!!!

I do have to say the TFF have great lyrics. I also have to say that "Mad World" or "The Hurting" (can you tell my favorite album of all time is The Hurting from Tears For Fears?) would have been my first choice, but I think we all know them and they have 'lost the effect' recently with Gary Jules version. Quoting:
I couldn't agree with you more, I think 'Dance Away' is a perfect song both lyrically and musically.  'Oh Yeah (On The Radio)' by Roxy would come into that category also in my opinion.

By the way, I'm a big Adam Ant fan too.

Really? Awesome!!!

I just purchased Antbox(finally!!) on line today along with B-Side Babies! I can't wait to get them, I have been waiting for the $$ to buy them. I don't know what I'd do without a tax refund!!

Oh Yeah(On the radio) is another one of my favorites by Roxy Music, along with More Than This, Avalon, and especially, Love is the Drug.

I had bought a Roxy Music CD ages ago but never actually listened to it. I decided I better get into something new for a change so I popped it into my computer and I haven't stopped listening since! I plan on buying a bunch of their actual records becuase that is the main thing I collect.

Too bad my record player isn't working >:(. I have to find another one, fast!
