Subject: What do you listen to now?

Written By: BigDaddy on 02/13/04 at 09:16 p.m.

Okay, slap my hand if I am straying too far away from the topic of "the '80s," but...

As a teenager of the 80s my taste in music was heavily influenced by the vaste array of 'alternative' music from the era. I also have been one in constant search for new music.

List your five favorite artists/groups from the 80s and then list your five favorites since 2000.

XTC
The The
The Smiths
REM
The Cure

Hot Hot Heat
Supergrass
Dandy Warhols
Eels
White Stripes

Why is it when you start a list, it is so hard to stay within the limits of the guidelines?

I'm still a loyal '80s listener (too many groups to list). But I take a little time to listen to new stuff, like:

Evanescence
White Stripes
Foo Fighters
Godsmack

;D

I will list my top 5 from each era.  I could probably list lots more from the 80s, but I will refrain...

80s
U2
The Cars
The Police
Duran Duran
INXS

Today
U2 (still)
Matchbox 20
Jars Of Clay
Fountains Of Wayne (very 80s sounding)
Creed
Evanescence

Subject: Re: What do you listen to now?

80's:
AC/DC
Guns N Roses (They rocked!)
Metallica (Can't stand them nowadays)
Tears for fears (Still like listening to their music)
The Police (My all time fav band)
XTC
Prince

Now:
The White Stripes (They put on an AWESOME show)
Kings of Leon (very good band, check them out)
Incubus
Eels
Placebo (a good brit band)
Her Space Holiday (Depressing lyrics but they have an overall good sound going)
Ween
Plus some of the stuff listed in the 80's category.

In the 80's, when I was old enough to buy my own tapes, I tended to listen to rock and classic rock, but my tastes moved more towards alt music as I got older, now I can't stand any of the Pop Rock/Metal/NuMetal bands. It also seems that regular FM stations are even more narrow in their playlist then in the 80's, would have never heard of half the bands listed above if it weren't for my satellite radio setup (and some select shoutcast stations).

I know you said list 5 faves, but I can't do that.  I don't go as much by acts, as by songs - and thus genre.  By that, there would be too many ties in my "5 faves"!

So, I'll just say I listened to pop '80s then, along w/"oldies" (basically, '50s/'60s stuff).

Now, or since, I still listen to those (if possible), and like country music and old*er* music too (always been eclectic, just that I only listened alot to the 2 originally mentioned), like '40s music - big band and swing, etc.  I listen to some more recent pop stuff, but mostly by accident - I'm not fond of most of the nasal whining and depressive arrangements.

And tons more!!!

Now:
Outkast

R. Kelly

Green Day
No Doubt(One of my fave bands all around, no matter what year!)

Fave artists of the 80's.

Depeche Mode
Duran Duran
Jody Watley
Lionel Richie(yeah I said Lionel Richie.)
Taylor Dayne
New Order
Ready For The World
Stevie B(late 80's/Early 90's artist)

Now:
Evansecence
Alicia Keys
Nas(One of the few real hip-hop artists left.)
Sarah Mclaughin(I like songs such as Possesion, Adia, Building A Mystery, and now Fallen.)
Ginuwine
Talib Kweli(A breath of fresh air in today's hip-hop.)
Queens of The Stone Age
Usher

I'm waiting to see if pop-punk bands Jet, Fountain Of Wayne, and The Darkness have nice careers. Fountains of Wayne had some hit songs in 1996 but jusy recently came back to the music scene. With Evanescence the lead singers voice is very sexy.

Then-- Peter Cetera, Chicago, Swing out Sister, Hall and Oates, everything 80's except country.  I even listened to a little punk, new wave, alternative.

Now--All of the above.....I listen to the local contemporary Jazz station.  No good radio stations that play 80's:(  I listen to cds most of the time or I have the music choice 80's channel on.

Rock 101 Vancouver (CFMI) and Jack FM (CKLG).  Classic rock and 80's mix respectively.

INXS
Queen
Meat Loaf
Guns 'N' Roses
Aerosmith
Adam and The Ants
Fleetwood Mac
The Police
Bon Jovi
Culture Club

Band I Like now:
Evanescence

I only like one band thats around now! I like that Hey Ya by Outkast and that Come With Me by Special D and I Miss You by Blink 182. I was actually born in the 1990 and I think 80s is the best generation for music. I can't stand music these days; they've no meaning whatsoever apart from that band up there. Who else is about the same age as me?
