Subject: "HIGH hair?"

Written By: jenweaver on 02/05/04 at 10:18 a.m.

One of my favorite "80s" things is those god awful "big hair" styles we wore late in the decade. I graduated in 1990, and if it were "scratch and sniff" my yearbooks would smell like Aqua Net!
I was guilty of some pretty high hair (i had the three inch high bangs! ugh) , but there were those who put mine to shame! One girl in my class had bangs that were at least 7 inches high, teased and sprayed out like a peacock's butt! (I know for a fact it was over 7", because we measured lol.)
Will anyone else fess up to having the mall bangs? How high were yours? I easily went thru 2 cans a week of hairspray... Aqua Net, Rave, Bold hold (remember that one?) and the pictures are soooo embarassing. My parents still have my senior picture blown up on the mantle, so whenever we visit, I come face to face with my teased bangs/frosty pink lipstick days!
How high was the highest hair in your neck of the woods? What did you call this style? Now we refer to it as "big hair" but it didn't really have a name, because EVERYONE had it...

Unfortunately, I had high hair.  I was just looking at some pictures last night.  I'm so glad that I don't even have bangs now.  I don't think I could make them stand up like that again if my life depended on it.  I did use lots of Bold Hold.  Rave was/is my hairspray of choice.

The sad thing is, there are a lot of women in the city where I live that still thinks this is the style.  I feel so sorry for them.

My bangs fluctuated between 2-3". But there were girls who's hair was probabaly 6-7". Its one of those love/hate hairstyles I think.  :D
I used Rave hard hold. I also had "wings" (where you pull the sides of your hair away from your face, spray w/ hairspray and blow dry to secure the hold)...anyone else remember that??? usually went along w/ the big bangs.  8)

Unfortunately, I had the wings, too.  From the front this style looked good, but from the back and sides it looked horrible.

Aqua Net and oil sheen were my best friends ;D

I had it all - big bangs, wings, a spiral perm and highlights (unfortunately all at the same time!).  Our products of choice were Sebastian Wet and Spritz.  At least the pictures are good for a laugh!

I hands down had THE biggest 80s hair ever! I graduated in 85 so my year book alone looked like something outta a flock of segulls video  my hair was like all blonde cause I dyed it and frosted my bangs looked all 5 feet tall and crinked! Why was big hair fashionable? Ill never know.

I remembered calling that "mall hair."  I graduated high school in 84 and the big hair was just starting to escalate.  By 87 or 88 it was huge.  So every girl in the mall had mall hair   ;D

Also another way to make the hair big (and fried) was the crimper. (ala Lea Thompson in Howard the Duck  :D )

But looking back on old pics definitely is great  ;D

I had all sorts of 'orrible, 'orrible 'airdos in my punk/new wave phase.  Bleached, dyed, and bleached again until it started to fall out.  I never had enough hair to do the Flock of Seagulls proper, but I could do a shorter version of it.  Aqua Net was great because it was soooo cheap and you could use LOTS of it.  I also used that spritz hairspray/gel.  My favorite was Stuff Stuff.
The New Jersey--Long Island axis gets all the credit for Big Hair Central.  However, the Italian girls in my suburban Boston high school could give any of 'em a run for their money in '86, '87.
I remember the peacock tierra with the mall bangs.  Everything fluffed up and piled high. Some of them had various levels of frost glinting under the lights! People make fun of the '80s big hair, but I still prefer it to the '70s feathered Farrah Fawcet style.
I was also a fan of the '80s asymmetrical styles a lot of the more posh women were wearing.

That's what I always do.  It's more of a styled flattop than a straight out crewcut, but it's easy.  Dries in three minutes, wash and wear, no worries!

Well I was a Glam Metal Queen in the late 80's so yes I had big hair !
It was bleached blonde and ended up snapping off due to all the abuse it got:(
I used to crimp it, then backcomb it and then use half a can of 'Shockwaves Hard Rock' hairspray.I still love the smell of that stuff, not that they make it anymore..........
