Subject: Where were you when John Lennon was killed?

Written By: Stevie B. on 02/04/04 at 08:28 p.m.

I was in the 7th grade. I can't remember if my mom woke me up,or if the alarm clock did its job,and I hit "snooze" for a few extra minutes of sleep. I do remember her coming into my bedroom that morning, and saying in a real sad voice,"John Lennon was shot, and killed". She was never a Beatles fan,but she was crying out loud, and shedding tears. I just started getting into the Beatles, and my sister was collecting their albums on vinyl, around late 1980. A very sad way to start the day.  :'( Thanks for the memories! Sincerely,Steve.

I was in the fourth grade, 9 years old. I didn't find out about it until the next morning, as I was asleep when the news broke. I had just started listening to the Beatles (thanks to my brother's friend) shortly before Lennon's death, too.

I was 8. I must have been getting ready for school or to go play or something but my mom didn't bother telling us about it.
What good would it have done?
I was busy being a happy kid with plenty of friends and toys...etcetera.
Maybe I saw the news that night but I don't recall any memories of it so it must not have impacted me that much immediately after it happened.   What was the actual date?
Wasn't it April 20 something? Or am I watching too much VH1?

I was in junior high.  What ticked me off was the yearbook for that school year had nothing but John Lennon stuff.   :P

Why couldn't they have done the same tribute for John Bonham of LedZeppelin?  >:(

Sorry, no disrespect.. but I treated the Lennon murder the same way I treated the death of Elvis-> <yawn> "Gee whiz.. that's too bad.."

(Can you tell i'm not a Lennon fan?  :) yet I like Julian Lennon's "Too Late For Goodbye" go figure, eh).

7th grade. I was/am a huge Beatles admirer. I delivered the morning newspapers so half awake at 4:30 in the morning I plopped down next to my stack of papers to see the headlines. I was shattered.

I woke up to my parents telling me.  They were so sad.  I was born in 71 and have YOUNG parents.  I do remember my father ran out that day or next day and bought "Starting Over" I think was the name of the album he recorded with Yoko Ono.  Well this was his last album he put out, so dad had to go scarf it up.  His intention was to keep the album in the wrapper.  Well.....didn't stay there.  Not cuz he opened it, cuz "guess who" opened it.  OOOPPPPSSS!  Surprised I wasn't standing in the corner for hours and grounded for life!  Never forgave me I don't think!  "starting over..oooh, oooh, oooh, oooh, wha, wha, wha" (something like that is how it goes).

The Beatles were by far my biggest musical influence as a kid right up until 79/80 when the Punk explosion occured in the US.

I remember being in jr high. I'd been talking about the Beatles during my lunch break with a bunch of kids. I recall this incredible conversation/debate about their continuing popularity and influences that a whole bunch of people started joining in the cafeteria.

They next day I woke up and it was on the radio that he had been shot and killed the night before. I always felt it was weird that a whole bunch of us were talking about him and he was killed later that night.

I remember listening to "Double Fantasy" that night and crying myself to sleep. It's strange to think I would do that and even more strange that I know for an absolute fact that no musician could ever bring me to tears from their death again.

When John Lennon was killed I wasn't even a twinkle in my Daddy's eye yet.

But if I had been alive, no matter how old I would've been, if I was old enough to remember, I'm sure I would have been devestated. I still get kinda remorseful whenever I think about Lennon.

I was also about 10 then, & I remember my mom driving me somewhere that morning, & she was crying. It was amazing how many people were affected by that.

I was only 4 so I don't remember ever hearing about his death. If I was born 20 years earlier, I think I would have been devastated.

I was a senior in high school. I can't remember exactly where I heard the news but I remember thinking, "This can't be real. It must be a mistake." They did mention it in my yearbook.

I was at Lackland Air Force Base, in San Antonio Texas, when I read the San Antonio Times. December 8th, 1980. Tragic really, was a sad day for music.
