Subject: New coke

Written By: Riely Manderson on 02/03/04 at 05:49 p.m.

:o OK so here it is 1984 or 85 im doing my homework and I see a commercial for new coke and in my head im thinking oh its just a spin off from the original coke its not like the whole coke changed. WRONG! The next day I buy some it tasted flatter sprite left out on a counter (if you know how that taste) I almost died I demanded a refound. So then a couple months later Coke was back thus Coke classics born. Anyone else remember New Coke.

I hated New Coke!  I couldn't believe they'd mess with perfection.  I like Coca Cola because it had a sharper, crisper taste than Pepsi.  I laughed as the Coca Cola company meekly marketed "Coca Cola Classic," and "New Coke" became a minor side item.  Is Coke II the same as New Coke?
Whatever happened to "Pepsi Free"?  How are people born after 1989 supposed to get that joke in "Back to the Future"?
???

Couldn't stand New Coke, still think it was a publicity stunt to get back some of the market share Coke lost to Pepsi..but I'm still bummed when they started to use high fructose surup instead of cane sugar, it still is missing that bite that I used to love.
BTW I always thought the joke on Pepsi Free was that it didn't have any Pepsi in it ;D!

I thought New Coke tasted like Pepsi.  Personally, I like the taste of Coke better.  They shouldn't have messed with it.

I do agree that it was just a marketing ploy also.  If you remember, that was around the time the Pepsi Challenge was going strong and Coke lost a lot of it's market share and seemed like #2 in the public eye (in the U.S. at least).  What made me laugh was when Coke said that New Coke was replacing old Coke and that old Coke would never be back again.  They were hiding the formula in a vault.  That's funny stuff!   ;D

It was awful!

Recently the Coca Cola company put out "Vanilla Coke".
And Pepsi did the same thing.  :P

Many soda companies always change or ad new produts.

The only thing I like is the current cherry flavored Mountain Dew.

I, too, was quite surprised when Coke announced that they were changing its time-tested formula in the mid '80s, and said that the "new" Coke would actually be replacing the "classic". However, I approached the change w/ an open mind, and actually liked the "new" Coke just as much as (if not slightly better than) the old! In fact, the "old" Coke did disappear completely from the market for a brief time, before they brought it back as "Coke Classic"...

Over the years, I've always flip-flopped between Coke and Pepsi; I like 'em both pretty much the same... :-)

You're behind the times. Coke's latest flavor (which hit the market just a few weeks ago) is actually "Coke with Lime". (Although like "Coke with Lemon", it's currently available only in "diet" form.) I've had 3 or 4 20-oz. bottles of the stuff already, and it's okay. I love lime flavor, but have never really been a fan of diet sodas. Just wish that Coke made both the lemon and lime versions of their cola in regular form, too. Don't know whether or not Pepsi's going to follow suit - but in a way, I hope they do, because at least Pepsi offers its lemon cola ("Pepsi Twist") in regular form, and not just diet... :-)

Anybody else tried the new lime Coke? ???

I have tried the Lime Coke and it's okay. I am not too big on diet drinks either but it's alright. :)
I am also hoping they come out with it in regular Coke. :-/

While I like Pepsi, I did not like the New Coke from the 80's, even though it was sweeter.
I also have not been brave enough to try the lime and vanilla soft drinks. I tried the lemon and did not like that.

Of course, vanilla Coke was an old fashioned soda fountain favorite way back into the 1940s.  Ditto cherry Coke and other flavors.  The old soda fountains, as in Rita Hayworth in the Schwab's drugstore, are practically extinct.  I wish they weren't. :'(  With the constant need to diversify the market, it's no wonder Coke and Pepsi are bottling the old flavors.

Does anyone remember when Crystal Pepsi came out about ten years ago? I think it was supposed to taste like regular Pepsi except with the coloring taken out, but it just seemed too strange to me. I think it was only on the market for a couple of years.  ::) ???

There is a small town in Texas where they have a Dr Pepper bottling plant and they still use cane sugar to sweeten the soda they make; tourists can go there and watch the whole process of it being made and bottled. They were talking about this on some show I watched the other night on the Travel Channel.

I would definately like sugar in a drink rather than the other sweeteners.  I remember the new Coke formula and I liked it, but everyone made such a big deal about it, Coke discontinued it.  I also took the Pepsi challenge once, remember it?  If you picked anything other than Pepsi, the Pepsi people got ticked off and ignored you and your selection.  When someone finally did choose Pepsi, they were congratulated making it look like all who took the challenge chose Pepsi, think Pepsi was actually chosen about 1 in 4 tries.

I wonder if Splenda will be the wave of the future in sweetening diet soft drinks. I know Diet Rite is already using that in their formula.

Corn syrup is MUCH more caloric than cane sugar, but it's MUCH cheaper.  The introduction of high fructose (aka corn syrup) to soft drinks and other sweets in the early '70s may be a big contributor to the alarming circumference of the American middle.

I remember Crystal Pepsi... it was supposed to be a new wave in un-cola colas... too bad it tasted completely unlike Pepsi in every imaginable way.

Splenda, also known as sucralose, would probably be very good to bring back that "bite" you refer to. Since it is made from sugar (it's a chlorinated sugar molecule basically) it tastes just like sugar, but it's sweeter... up to 400 times sweeter. The only drawback is that it hasn't undergone extensive testing, and may turn out to be just as bad as aspartame or saccharin... they already know it can reduce the size of your thymus gland by as much as 40%.

You have the American Government and agriculture (sugar) lobbyists to thank for that.  Raw sugar in the USA is subsidized, regulated, and taxed such that sugar in the USA costs 4 times the market price.

As a result, we get corn syrup in our Coke, and many, MANY candy manufacturers have moved overseas so that they can buy sugar at a fair price.

American sugar cane producers are on the "gravy train", and you and I are the locomotive.

Speaking of, I remember there was a big scare about tainted Perrier water c. 1989, but I can't remember what it was tainted with.  I do remember getting a free Perrier in Harvard Square when they were doing a big PR promo, trying to restore confidence in the product.
