Subject: The Toy

Written By: SmithsGirl on 02/03/04 at 01:37 p.m.

Okay, does anyone remember the 80's movie called
"The Toy" ?

It was with Richard Pryor and Jackie Gleason. About a rich kid. The kid can have anything he wants in a huge toy store. But instead of picking a toy he picks the janitor, his name is Jack. So this Jack guy (Richard Pryor) goes to live at the mansion with the kid. Anyways, the boy treats Jack like crap and pulls pranks on him until Jack teaches him some lessons and morals. Then the kid likes Jack and is all sad when its time for Jack to leave. I remember this one scene when Richard Pryor is in this giant inflatable wheel thing and rolls away. It's totally hilarious!

I have brought up this movie many times to my friends but they all think im hullucinating. It was a really funny movie. One of my favorite's for sure. I remember it as clear as day.

:-/ I honestly think it was the dumbest movie made ok so heres a little  white boy aka Swartz from a christmas story and he sees a funny black man and wants him as a slave practically.I just couldnt find the meaning of this  film two thumbs down. :-[

I agree with Riely.  I think Scott Schwartz ended his adult entertainment career and went back home to work in his dad's sports memorabilia store.  Something like that.

Totaly agree, something really degrading about a rich white boy "buying" a adult black male as a Toy, even more insulting to have even been suggested for this idea to be made into a major motion picture. Still don't know why Richard Pryor did this film, maybe he was in one of his bouts with drug abuse..all in all a low point in his carrer. Nothing for Jackie Gleason to brag about either.
And the little kid? What does it say for a child actor who as an adult only gets work in porn? Well, at least he's not holding up video stores..

Shame. You may think like that as an adult, but when your a child racism doesnt cross your mind. The movie was humorous because of the pranks, not because of the colour of skin.

I'm not shamed, I'm black, and unfortunatly, I was made keenly aware of racism as a child..the world MADE me aware of it..I call 'em as I see 'em.
Sorry, but I think its naive to really think that Richard Pryor was black and Master Bates was white didn't play a factor in the theme or the "selling" idea of this film.
This film would not have been made or as popular had the Toy been a white man or the boy been black, asian, latino, etc...there was clearly a race and class element in it.
I'm sure Mr. Pryor would agree...

No, worries SmithsGirl, neither am I, just that The Toy is a sore spot with me...my problem not yours.
