Subject: 80's supergroup

Written By: bags4112 on 01/30/04 at 11:33 a.m.

Ok, a few friends and I were sitting around having a few drinks the other night and a pretty cool question was asked of me.

Right now, if I could put together a "supergroup" from the 80's with people that are still alive, who would I have in this band.

I was able to come up with this.

Dave Gahan (Depeche Mode) - Singer
Lisa Stansfield - Backup singer
Andy Taylor (Duran Duran) - Guitar
Johnny Marr (Smiths) - Guitar
Mick Karn (Japan) - Bass
Rolf Brendel (Nena) - Drums
Gillian Gilbert (New Order) - Keyboards

Even though I think John Taylor is one of the greatest bass players around, I picked my list according to who would make the most interesting mix of musicians.

Dave Gahan would be the PERFECT lead singer! 8)  I'm not saying that just because I've been obsessed with him since 1984...  lol

But I would choose Bjork (formerly of the Sugarcubes) or Annie Lennox as a backup singer.

David Gahan? What...now? Noooooooo...his voice is not sounding too good these days. Martin L. Gore! There's your singer...:D Hehehe. But seriously, folks...

I have the frontman narrowed down to three people: Martin L. Gore, Morrissey, or David Sylvian (of Japan). Take your pick.

Keyboards/Conceptual Artiste - Alan Wilder

Keyboards/Backing Vocals - Martin L. Gore (if he loses out in the frontman race)

Backing Vocals - Alison Moyet

Guitars - Johnny Marr

Bass - John Taylor

Drums - a drum machine or reel-to-reel. We'll call him "George." (Temporarily, 'til we announce the "name the inanimate drummer" contest winner in Smash Hits magazine.) :)

I'd like to see a group with...

Annie Lennox(Lead Vocals)
Rick Astley(Lead Vocals)
John Taylor (Bass)
Eddie Van Halen (Guitar)
Tommy Lee (Drums)
Cindy Lauper (Backup Vocals)
Boy George (Backup Vocals)

I have no idea how they would sound, but they are all so talented it would be interesting. I also did this list with the idea that it would be the 80's version of that person, not what they sound like now necesarrily.  :)

I definitely agree w/ including the Japan members! I'm listening to David Sylvian's 'Secrets of the Beehive' right now!

Here’s something off the top of my head. I’d probably switch a few with more thought but my ears are drooling at the possibilities…

Lead vocal – Peter Murphy (Bauhaus) and David Sylvian (Japan)

Backing vocal – Lisa Gerrard (Dead Can Dance) and Elizabeth Frazer (Cocteau Twins)

Lead Guitar – Billy Duffy (Cult)

Backing Guitar – Robert Smith (The Cure)

Bass – Mick Karn (Japan)

Drums – Budgie (Siouxsie & the Banshees)

Keyboards – Gary Numan

Great topic!  Something similar went around a few months ago, and I probably had different answers then.  But, I have 2 bands, because the 80s were a time of polar opposite musical styles, so here goes...

Rock
Steve Perry (Journey) - Lead Singer
Eddie Van Halen (Van Halen) - Lead Guitar
Adam Clayton (U2) - Bass
Neal Peart (Rush) - Drums
Rick Wakeman - Keyboards (Yes)
Jack Blade (Night Ranger) - Rhythm Guitar
Patty Smyth (Scandal) & Sheryl Crow- Background Vocals

Pop/New Wave
Jim Kerr (Simple Minds) - Lead Singer
Mick Jones (The Clash & B.A.D.) - Lead Guitar
Nick Rhodes (Duran Duran) - Keyboards
Stewart Copeland (The Police) - Drums this one was a little harder since most pop 80s bands used synths or drum machines
Phil Thornalley (The Cure) - Bass
Alison Moyet (Yaz) & Annie Lennox (Eurythmics) - Background Vocals

Maxwell, you're too much!  What a band that would be!  Lead by the man who has more charisma than David Lee Roth, Oliver North!  Classic!   ;D ;D ;D
