Subject: Ishtar-Was it really that bad?
A "Far Side" cartoon showed it as the only movie in
Hell's video store,
Didn't it come out in the 80's?

I didn't see "Ishtar" or "Heaven's Gate," the two most famous '80s movies most famous for being terrible. I think you'd have to see for yourself whether it's that bad. I know on the other end of the spectrum "ET" was not as good as everyone said. It wasn't a bad movie, I enjoyed it, but I didn't see the big deal. Now, "Reds" was the movie they should talk about like they do "Ishtar." I can't BELIEVE that tedious piece of swill got Best Picture.
For me, the only movie in hell's video store would be "Room With a View."

Yes. Yes it was.
It's the reason why I am this way today. ;)

Yes, Ishtar was THAT bad..I was dragged to see it by my almost girlfriend when it came out..that she took me to see this garbarge helped make up my mind that she wasn't right for me.
Heveans Gate, BTW, wasn't that bad, it was just very looong!
The movie went way overbudget, but wasn't any worse than other movies, it was just too long and dreary to watch..

I saw Ishtar when it came out. There were 5 or 6 other people in the theater with me when it started (aside from my brother), when I left, we were the only two in the theater. People actually got up during the movie and would audibly say "this sucks". I've seen it a couple times on cable afterwards, and I think the main problem, is that the first half is slow and not funny. I guess the humour is supposed to be in the really awful songs they write and perform. The second half (when Hoffman/Beatty) arrive in the desert is better, but only marginally so. It actually loses the overwrought serious feel of the early half, and tries to be more over the top.
It's mostly memorable because it had such big names attached to it, was over budget, and was totally unwatchable. If no one famous was attached to it, and it was well underbudget, no one would remember it (like plenty of other crappy movies from any generation). It's the same reason Gigli is about to win a bunch of Razzies.

Ishtar certainly deserves its place in the cinema Hall of Shame...

Yeah, it's a really bad movie. But if you go into it with the right frame of mind you can see that it's so bad it's actually really funny!
I mean here's Dustin Hoffman and Warren Beatty playing these horribly bad characters in this horribly bad film with horribly bad dialogue. I always laugh my butt off at just how bad it is.
I would definitely recommend checking it out, but please do understand that we're not talking quality film here! Get a bunch a friends together and watch it a few times. Learn the songs and dialogue and turn it into your personal Rocky Horror Picture Show!
Shwuck! ;)

Never Forget also,
the terrible movie
from 2001,
Crocodile Dundee in LA, that was PURE Garbage,
Anyone see my post "That is soo 1994-ish"

Oh my God - Ishtar had to have been one of the worst movies to have come out - at least until Eyes Wide Shut was released.
ALTHOUGH - that scene where they are sittign on the camel - and the camera pans back , and you see that the camel is just sitting there - was pretty funny. Not funny enough to salvage he movie - but funny non the less.

yeah, but no one expected that to be good... this was Warren Beatty and Dustin Hoffman, people had high expectations for this movie until the reviewers saw it.
