Subject: Why are the CULT(the band)not well known in the US

Written By: NASCARnut on 01/23/04 at 06:01 p.m.

I don't know why most people here in the USofA have no idea of who The Cult are! They assume Blue Oyster Cult and I tell them NO,the band from England! Then they claim they never heard 'em before. Could it be that Ian Astbury and co. are considered "alternative" here in the States? To me, the Cult is an all-out ROCK band!! And Ian was a hottie with that gorgeous face and long black hair, and that VOICE is totally awesome! I know Ian is touring as one of the Doors now,but I hope the Cult get back together and OVERRUN America with their killer music! :-*

I think a lot of people know who the Cult is..
It might depend on your age and the age of the people your talking to however..
The Cult were at their height of their success in the mid to late 80's, i.e. Fire Woman/Sonic, Temple & She Sells Sanctuary/Love & Electric albums.
From where I lived in the mid 80's The Cult weren't getting any airplay except on the stations (ex. altern rock/college rock stations) that were playing the Cure/Smiths (i.e.before they were popular in the US). And you could of only seen their videos on MTV's 120 mins.
They really never got their due or exposure in the states..

I've heard of The Cult. They're cosidered "alternative",but are more "rock" like the ranks of Def Leppard and Bon Jovi than the likes of REM and The Cure, also great bands. (I'm a fan of both rock & alternative music) I don't care about what genre they're penned. At least they made great music.

"She Sells Sanctuary", "Edie", and "Fire Woman" are great songs.  8)

The Cult were a popular alternative band in the U.S., and had a good amount of spillover into the mainstream rock audience.  They were big from about '86-'92.  Americans just have a short memory for bands from overseas once they stop touring and releasing records regularly.

For instance, Midnight Oil finally got airplay on mainstream U.S. rock stations with the "Diesel and Dust" album.  Their success continued with "Blue Sky Mining," but then completely dropped off.  The average MTV-watching American kid wouldn't know Midnight Oil today.

BTW, I've never heard of anyone confusing The Cult with Blue Oyster Cult! :D

They weren't rock when they started, they were a goth band & then named 'Souther Death Cult' & then 'Death Cult' & then finally 'The Cult'.

Check out their early stuff like 'Resurrection Joe' & 'Spiritwalker' for a great alternative sound!

i remember reading a story in some music magazine on how the cult toured with metallica. they were the opening act ::). talk about conflicting styles of music. they were booed by the fans, of coarse. alternative bands will always carry that stigma of not being as popular as they should be. which is fine, i like being the kid with the strange taste in music.

i loved the cult, i had to buy a second tape of sonic temple because the first one wore thin.

I think the thing about the Cult is that they were much better musically but didnt have the "larger than life image" that most rock bands had at the time (i.e. Motley Crue, Poison, etc.).  That fact probably held back their popularity from become huge.

Im sure glad they included "She Sells Sanctuary" on the GTA: Vice City soundtrack.  Theres nothing like being chased around by the cops in a stolen Ferrari jamming to the Cult

Exactly - I loved Southern Death Cult!!! Death Cult was really good as well.  Their music was part of the early Goth movement. They were also considered Positive-Punk and Post-Punk.

Recording under their last name, as The Cult, their second album "Love" was by far their best, relative to what came before as SDC and DC.

But for those that only know about them as The Cult, their 3rd and 4th album's  "Electric" and "Sonic Temple" where just straight out rock and roll.

Their 5th album "Ceremony", released in 1991, was at the height of their popularity, but by that time they'd gone so hard rock they'd long lost the majority of their original fan base. And of course 1991 was the year of "Smell's like Teen Spirit" so grunge pretty much killed their upward climb and The Cult's popularity quickly faded away.

They did put out a new album just a couple years ago by the way. And as NASCARnut mentioned at the start of this thread, Ian is sitting in Jim Morrisions seat for The Doors reunion.

Speaking of stolen Ferrari's, wasn't the Cult's music in the movie "The Hidden" (w/Kyle MacLachlan)? I thought I'd mention it because the alien in the movie loved to steal Ferrari's and listen to metal music. It was actually kinda funny..
I've actually been looking for the soundtrack for quite a while and can't find any info, might be out of print.

I saw the Cult open for Metallica back in the late 80's early 90's and Yes they did get boooed off the stage. I believe that Ian Astbury is now singing for the Doors. What a shame.

Personally I'd be hard pressed to find a single person here in the USofA who DOES NOT know of the band The Cult.  Most are also aware that the precurrsor to The Cult was Ian Astbury's brush with punk "Southern Death Cult".  You have to be moving in rather limited circles (limited perhaps by age not volume) to have no, or even few associates familiar with The Cult. Branch out, network, don't be frightened.
