My faves of 84 were

Against All Odds (lust Jeff Bridges)
All Of Me (Steve Martin at his best)
Blame it on Rio (Michael Caine - always a good laugh)
The Bounty (Young handsome Mel sighhhhhhhhhh)
Cannonball Run 2 (argh I cant help it - I loved both Cannonballs !!!! yes I scare myself !)
Footloose (always for that Bacon boy !!)
Hot Dog (I think I saw this like 4 times in one week !  David Naughton and snow and hot tubs !!)
Indiana Jones & Temple of Doom (theres my Harrison boy)
Micki & Maude (Always luv a good Dudley Moore Comedy)
The Natural (Robert Redford all aglow in that soft lighting !!)
The Philadelphia Experiment (one of my fave "back in time" movies - but it rarely gets shown on tv these days)
Red Dawn (Patrick Swizzle and Jen Grey before Dirty Dancing)
Romancing The Stone (I never get tired of this one - love it)
StarMan (more lusty Jeff Bridges and I love the dvd commentary he does !!)
Unfaithfully Yours (more Dudley Moore and added bonus of the sexy Armand Assante !!)

I will add Terminator - but it wasnt a fave of the 80's for me - in fact I saw it for the first time last year !!  So it took me a long long time to realise what a classic it was !!

Absolutely brilliant physical comedy.  I hyperventilate laughing when Steve Martin is flailing around on the sidewalk when Ms. Cutwater's soul takes over half of his body.  Lily Tomlin has the best "Oh sh*t" in cinema history when she sees him through the car mirror.
Steve Martin made his bones through goofy physical comedy, but his gift runs the gamut.  His writing wit is very dry and cerebral.

Erm, actually, thinking about it, I like Star Trek III: The Search for Spock from 1984; I like it just as much now, and Ghostbusters less  :P

Joysticks.

Just kidding :)

Actually, I think Tron is the greatest movie of the 80s. But then again, I'm a pathetic classic video game junkie. So what do I know? :)

Another great movie from 1984 was 1984.  That is Michael Radford's screenplay of George Orwell's 1984, my favorite novel.  They could not have found a better Winston Smith than John Hurt!

I hope Ghostbusters 3, comes out, anyone know where I can find a script for it?

And the bad ones, too, apparently. ;D

A quote from my choice for Best Comedy of 1984:

"Human sacrifice, dogs and cats living together, mass hysteria!"

Ghostbusters, natch.

THE COMPANY OF WOLVES
THE FOURTH MAN
FRANKENWEENIE
THE KILLING FIELDS
MRS. SOFFEL
A NIGHTMARE ON ELM STREET
ONCE UPON A TIME IN AMERICA
PARIS, TEXAS
A PASSAGE TO INDIA
STOP MAKING SENSE
STRANGER THAN PARADISE
STREETWISE
THIS IS SPINAL TAP
TIGHTROPE

I'll stop now...

I'm not sure if a Ghostbusters would work now. And I would probably hate the all the inevitable gratuitous CGI involved (Ghostbusters 2 itself had somewhat weaker effects work).

Then again, my favorite (recent) supernatural movie, The Frighteners, has excellent visual effects to go with its weird and funny screenplay.
