I only remember one bit from Joysticks, a blonde with a hot dog between her breasts teasing one of the arcade nerds. Very '80s indeedee!
Someone mentioned "Better Off Dead," which definitely qualifies among the best teen angst '80s movies. Anything with Curtis "Booger" Armstrong: B.O.D, "Revenge of the Nerds," "Risky Business," etc. There's a punk band out there called The Lane Myers. Don't forget "Heathers."
"Porky's" should make the list because of the controversy it stirred, and it stirred a lot for a dumba*s piece of crap movie. It was the one on the jr. high kids WANTED to see but didn't get to. There was a porno version called "Piggie's"
NatLamp's "Vacation" (the original one, not that other crap) is a perennial favarite of mine. Saw it in the theater, watched it a dozen times on video, and I'll watch on TV, bad editing and all, any time it's on.
If you read the National Lampoon issues from the '70s, you can meet the prototypes for many ideas John Hughes included in his '80s movies. For example, there was "Vacation '58," in which a family takes a road trip to Disneyland. Lots of the "Vacation" bits are there, including the dog left tied to the bumper. The ending is different. Dad tracks down Walt Disney, shoots him in the leg, and gets locked up. In another story, about a family Christmas, there's an early version of Long Duck Dong, a foreign exchange student who arrives with the grandparents, except his name was Gung Ho, IIRC. In another issue, Hughes did a series of captioned photos about a couple videotaping sex (late '70s primitive video cam!), and the punch line is, "we better erase this, I'd hate for some a*shole like Hughes to get his hands on it." This scenario pops up in "European Vacation."

Subject: Re: Favorite 80's movies??!
I cant believe that 'pump up the volume' hasnt got a mention at any point. Its technically a 1990 movie, but deserves honourable mention. But lets face the facts ... anthing with Ringwald, Michael-Hall, Slater, Corey, McCarthy, or any other brat packer is going to be included. These films will always be immortal as far as my generation is concerned.
I know that when Im in my 50's, Im still going to be watching at least one john hughes film every week. My kids will tease me, but if its a choice between that and JLo. Ill take Molly Ringwald every time.
P.s - It would be nice if everybody could give us some details about themselves. ie Where they grew up, what were they doing in 85 (the year of the breakfast club). And what they do now... To start it off.... I grew up in brisbane, Australia. In 85 I was starting High School, And I had a huge crush on the girl on the 0742 train with the long black hair. Now an airline captain in the UK.
Every body has a story to tell. So lets hear them...
Subject: Re: Favorite 80's movies??!
Another great 80's film is Big Trouble in Little China. If any of John Carpenter's films should have been monster hits, this one is definitely at or near the top of the list. A great blend of action and comedy with a classic Kurt Russell performance and enough quotable lines for ten movies. ;D
Subject: Re: Favorite 80's movies??!
In 1985 let's see...I was in 4th grade growing up in Flagstaff, Arizona. I was really into Michael Jackson, Madonna, Cyndi Lauper, and Weird Al.
I remember 4th grade was the grade that I had seen the Challenger explode. I think it was actully Jan 1986. They turned the Tv's on in class and we watched the news.
Thats what I was doing in 1985 :D
Subject: Re: Favorite 80's movies??!
A few more good ones:
Goonies
Conan the Barbarian
Beastmaster
Caddyshack
Aliens
Subject: Re: Favorite 80's movies??!
I loved Beastmaster! It's one of my guilty pleasures. Everytime it's on, I have to watch it.
Subject: Re: Favorite 80's movies??!
Cool. Have you seen the dvd? It's a pretty jam-packed disc.
Subject: Re: Favorite 80's movies??!
I didn't even know it was out on DVD. This is great! I know what I'll be asking for on my birthday. ;D No movie collection would be complete without it.

I mentioned "Repo Man"! I should have mentioned it on the "soundtracks" thread. Most of us on this board thing in terms of New Wave but the "Repo Man" soundtrack is great if you like hardcore and Tex-Mex punk. It's got Circle Jerks, Black Flag, Burning Sensations, Suicidal Tendancies, Plugz, etc.
Whenever I see Emilio Estevez, I see a little bit of Otto. Of course, when I see Harry Dean Stanton's "Jack Walsh" (Pretty in Pink), I see "Bud" instead.
The character actor Tracy Walter, "Miller," the junkyard guy with the UFO-cosmic coincidences theory, reveals the terrible truth, "John Wayne was a feg..." Isn't it ironic how he later played the librarian in "Philadelphia" who suggests the AIDS-stricken Andy take a private cubicle?
TRIVIA: Harry Dean Stanton played Jack Walsh in "Pretty in Pink." Name another '80s movie with a character called "Jack Walsh." Tracy Walter also appears in this film as a diner counter man.
Subject: Re: Favorite 80's movies??!

I remember that one. At the time it scared me big time, especially when that guy took out his eyes and exposed his lizard eyes and when Donovan ripped his face off. I watched it awhile back and it definitely didn't have the same effect. But I still enjoy watching it. I just found out they are coming out with another one...called "V:The Second Generation" ;D

I LOVED V! I watched the series, too. My brother and I used to pretend that we were on the show. Sometimes I'd be Julie and other times I'd be Diana. He was always Donovan. I fell so madly in love with Marc Singer because of this movie (well, the Beastmaster helped, too.) I'm glad to hear that they are going to do a next generation movie, also.

So many great movies from the 1980s; where to start...
In no particular order (except, perhaps, Raiders):
Raiders of the Lost Ark
Ferris Bueller's Day Off
The Breakfast Club
Aliens
RoboCop
The Lost Boys
The Empire Strikes Back
...lots more :)
E.T. - I liked that movie for years, but I seem to like it less as time goes on (or maybe I'm just reeling from the terrible "Special Edition" version recently).

"Blade Runner" was a big favorite of mine. That was the first and last time I liked either Sean Young or Rutger Hauer in anything. Other favorite Harrison Ford movies of mine (besides "Star Wars" and "Raiders" movies) from the 80s are "Witness" and "Mosquito Coast." His character in "Mosquito Coast" always reminded me of my own nutty dad.
Of course, I love Terry Gilliam. I had to watch "Brazil" a couple of times before I "got it." "Time Bandits" is still my favorite Terry Gilliam movie. Then again, I'm into just about anything affiliated with Monty Python. I was one of those dorks who went around reciting Monty Python sketches...come to think of it, I still am! ;D
