"Changed my hair style so many times, I don't know what I look like!"

--Talking Heads

I had punk hair dos, but I didn't like punk rock.  That earned me the epithet "poseur."  That was hypocrisy on their part, the punks were the ones going on about freedom of expression and individuality.

I had an orange mohawk at one point.  I'd usually dye it, then bleach it for various hues of orange and blonde, various lengths and spikiness, like Depeche Mode.  I got a crewcut when it started to fall out after a few years of abuse.  I've worn it very short since then.

My WORST hairdo was an attempt at the most famous hairdo of the '80s.  Think: "And I ran, I ran so far away..." ;)

Where could you have existed in the US with an orange mohawk?  LA, NYC, San Francisco, maybe Denver?  I thought the Punk/New Wave styles were cool in the 80s, as I was there, but just can't picture a person walking along with an orange mohawk like for example in Alabama.

I must confess, I had a mullet.  Several variations too.  I had the Bono mullet for awhile.  I also had the Michael Hutchence mullet for awhile too until the mid 80s.  But from 1986 until about 1989 or 1990, I had the Rob Lowe "St. Elmo's Fire" mullet.  What was I thinking?   ::)

I had the crewcut look during the latter part of the 1980's. :D

My battle for long hair triumphed in 1984 when my parents caved in to my constant whining.  ;D  I had a false start when barber costs got too high for them and my step-mom tried cutting my hair instead-- which she did maybe 2 or 3 times, but when she snipped my ear, I had to draw the line.  >:( ;)  Enjoyed long relatively long hair until the mid 90's.

Now I hide pics of me from that time from my kid!  :)

If and when my hair thins out, i'm blaming it on the acid rain we had in the 80's.  ;D

In suburban Boston, every town had a few "punks."  We were a persecuted minority, hassled by jocks and rednecks, tailed by the police on suspicion of drug activity, and, at one point, accused of Satanism by some of the local hayseeds.  So, why did we do it?  I, for one, was a social outcast BEFORE I took on a "punk" image.  I had been a hapless dork, one of the most bullied kids in junior high.  The "punk" thing was valued self expression amid suburban pathology.
The mohawk I had was not a rooster style, but like the one Joe Strummer had, just spikier and bleached.  My friend Wayne had a fan mohawk.  That was when the Satanism rumor emerged.
We'd be in McDonald's hanging out, and some of the little kids would be scared of us.  This got the parents worried.  It didn't help that we dressed in black, or that my friend Sara wore a big pentagram.  Then a calf was found with its throat slit in a pasture near town.  Someone blamed us.  Satanic ritual, you know.  The school nurse and the football coach gave our names to the police and brought the local concerns to the school administration.  It backfired.  Our principal was a cool, liberal guy.  He told them in so many words they were all full of BS, and he didn't want to hear anything more about it.
I'm not in touch with any of those "punks."  They all grew up to be shits. :D

Between the age of nine and ten, I was forced to sport around a pixie cut.  :(

But my hair, when I was 11, was also nasty as I was trying to grow it out.  :P

I had soooooo many bad styles...

1.  Jericurl  (Yes I have to admit it...  I wanted to have that Michael Jackson look)
2.  Floofy Blond Cut  (I dyed my hair blond like Martin L Gore from Depeche Mode) but there was one problem...it did not look right on me (black female).  LOL  Haaaaaaaaaa. ;D ::) ::)
3.  Salt n Pepa cut (Since I the Martin Gore look didn't work I tried to shape it some more and add curls like Salt n Pepa did in their Push It video).
4.  Tina Turner spiky look  (When my hair was longer... I would use Aqua Net and tease it)  It just made me look like a black chick with a bad mullet.  LOL
5.  Braids  I did the Bo Derek thing... but I wasn't happy with them so they didn't last.

I also had some sort of pixie cut and I think some sort of mullet-type haircut as well. It was awful!  :P ::)

Without question the worst hair I had was the Jericurl!
To this day I don't know why I did this. Had it my junior year in High school.
On cold mornings all the activator I put on it would freeze on the walk to school, and would have the smartalecks in fist period breaking off activator "icecicles" from the back of my head! Then as it warmed up it would drip all on the back of my white members only jacket!
What a mess!

Do you  remember  having a  "tail"?

You know, all your  hair was a  short length, except for a few strands  that  grew long in the back, so it looked like a  tail? It was really stupid!

And then, in the late 80's amongst the "hip hop" set, there was the "box cut" which made your head look square!

Yeah, lots of kids at the school I went to had those rattails, and so did NKOTB. And yes, they were stupid not to mention ugly.

Yes, the "rat tail," or "rat's tail."  The Latino kids used bleach them orange. The teacher, Mr. Moore (Howard Hessman), on Head of the Class had quite a tail (BTW, didn't Arvid Engman look an awful lot like Bill Gates?)  I remember the heydey of the "box cut" as being 1990.  I was living in Boston that year, and all the dudes had 'em.  The chic was to make the top flat and squared off as well.  Some guys had little designs or logos shaved into the back or sides.  The best example of this style was the guy in Kid 'n Play, you know, from the "House Party" movies.
