Have you seen the new Cingular commercial where they are playing the song 867-5309??
I guess the girl in it is "Jenny"! LOL
Subject: Re: 867-5309
Yes, I have. I actually like that commercial. :D
Subject: Re: 867-5309
I remember in 1991 listening to a local rock station that called that number (no idea what area code). They got some old lady and she mentioned she gets calls for "Jenny" once in a while and complained about it too. :D
Subject: Re: 867-5309
Just saw an interview w/Tommy Tutone..before they released the song the label's lawyers advised that this song was going to cause trouble for people with the same phone #.
He said, screw 'em, he couldn't change it..555-5309 just didn't sound right..
Subject: Re: 867-5309
Has anyone ever tried to call that number? :o ;D

Subject: Re: 867-5309
I haven't, but I know that alot of people did back in the day. Also, when Bruce Almighty was released, there was a number for God on the pager and the telephone lines were swamped w/ people trying to call it... ::)
Subject: Re: 867-5309
That number was disconnected all over the country amid the song's popularity. There was a similar phenomenon last year with (I think) God's 1-800 number featured in the Jim Carrey movie "Bruce Almighty."

I noticed that it was an "actual" number in the theater, but when we saw it on VHS it was edited to become a 555 number.

Now Snickers has a commercial with a guy singing the song while driving a car. He starts eating the candy bar in the middle of the song. It goes, "Eight-Six-Seven-Finmph-Mmph-Mmph-Mmphmnhmn."

I remember watching an episode of Family Guy where Stewie, the genius baby, gets lost or he runs away, I forget which one. He wants his mommy badly so he's able to find a phone. Stewie proceeds to try to remember the home phone number but he starts dialing 867-5309 then suddenly he realizes his gaff and curses, Dang You Tommy TuTone! :P
Subject: Re: 867-5309
It was an okay one hit wonder, has anyone seen the original 80s video of the song? imo it was a stupid video, the lead singer was rockin out trying to look cool, and he had a big space between his 2 front teeth, maybe by now he looks like this ;D

Something similar happened with "The Simpsons" when Homer gave out an e-mail address: chunkylover53@aol.com. Turns out it's legit. And many people who have e-mailed him have received replies. Supposedly, it is one of the writers who started it.

"Beachwood 4-5789" (The Marvelettes, 1967) was on the old call routing system, the prefix and the five digits. Wouldn't get you anywhere today. I can't remember how that system worked, I'll have to look it up. You know who wrote that song? Van McCoy, most famous for "The Hustle."

Haaaaaaaaaaaaaa ;D
Out of pure boredom... I called the number a few moments ago (using my local area code) and a recording came on saying that it was a non-published extension and it advise callers to call main operator for further assistance. LOL too funny... :P
867-5309
Subject: Re: 867-5309
Haha! I tried it this morning, but that prefix isn't available in my local calling area either. I wish I had access to a phone line, i'd wardial it trying every possible long distance extension.
Subject: Re: 867-5309
imagine if you called and Tommy Tutone was on the other line? too funny. LOL ;D

I remember seeing this other 80s video on VH1 Classic that had another phone number as a song title... luckily, it wasn't as classic... Thank God it didn't start a horrible trend :-/ LOL

Actually, that was not an uncommon thing to find into the 1960's. Today, you would type BE4-5789 (BEachwood). The same thing goes for PEnnsylvania 6-5000) {or the 1980's movie TRansylvania 6-5000}. I remember in the 1970's, we had a number that started with 245-XXXX. My mom told people to call "CHocolate 5-XXXX", and everybody thought it was real cute.
As for 867-5309, I remember calling that number in LA after the song was a hit. The call was disconnected, but after the message from the phone company telling you that, you could stay on and talk to other people. There were like 10 kids, all yelling at each other. Like a big party-line.
Subject: Re: 867-5309
I've been tempted to dial that number and ask for Jenny.
Subject: Re: 867-5309
Today, numbers on Tv shows have 555 in em'.

Subject: Re: 867-5309
No one mentioned B-52's "6060-842" from their first album. They printed a disclaimer, "This is a fictional phone number, any resemblances are purely coincidental." No matter, this series of digits is out of line with the U.S. numbering system in 1979 and today!
Subject: Re: 867-5309
If you dial that number backwards (248-0606) it will work in Alberta, Canada. :)

Breathe heavily and moan, "Is this Alberta? Is Alberta there?" I got your number off the bathroom wall, Alberta 248-0606. Nah, doesn't have the same ring as 867-5309, Jenny. It's prolly a donut shop in Red Deer!

The record company actually wanted the group Tommy Tutone to change the song to 555-5309, but the group refused.
When the song became a hit, hundreds of people in the country who had that number were flooded with "crank" calls.
In retaliation, several magazines published the full phone numbers of the members of the band. Heh heh... ;D

I resurrected this old thread b/c I heard on the local 80's station that this number was being sold on ebay...as of the time of this posting it was up to over $100,000 US dollars. If you do a search for that nubmer on ebay, you get almost 60 listings. :o
