Subject: New Years Eve, New Years Day
I know this is beyond the scope of this board, but I have boycotted New Years for the fourth consecutive year. Why? Because it's depressing. You go to a party, get drunk, make some resolutions you'll break by MLK day, do the champagne toast, sing auld langsyne, dodge the drunks and the cops on the way home, wake up on New Years Day hungover with nothing to do.
Oh, you can go to First Night. Whether you go to a big city or a local affair, it's the same. Standing outside waiting in lines, and, in this part of the country, SHIVERING. Then you watch the ball drop, or whatever. Everyone shouts Happy New Year!! And then you fight the crowds and the traffic trying to get home.
New Years Day, what's that crap? What happens on New Years Day? Nothing. Not anything at all. You watch sports on TV or go to the movies. Who needs it? It's a bring-down, man!
OK, I've griped my gripe, thanks for putting up with me.

You kidding? New Years day was invented for one reason and one reason only: FOOTBALL!
Subject: Re: New Years Eve, New Years Day
You know what you are?
Absolutely right.
I can't really say I "celebrate" new year's. There aren't any huge parties around here. I'm a freshman in high school, man. There's nothing to do. I can't see any fun in getting drunk. My family and me go out to eat. My parents fall asleep before 10:30. I stay up, watch the ball fall on TV. Woo hoo. I mean, this year, I'm watching the fricking Simon and Garfunkel Concert in Central Park. What does that say? I really don't care too much about New Year's. I'm sure when I get older, I'll have a few drinks, play cards, whatever. Get together with neighbors and friends, that sort of thing. But it isn't a real huge deal to me, I guess.
I hope you have a safe and happy 2004. :)
I'm off to finish watching the concert on TV...

P.S. I KNOW there's nothing to do on New Year's Day! Watch football, I guess. Umm, but when you think about it, it's kind of a day that's just... there.
Subject: Re: New Years Eve, New Years Day
My husband and I stayed home this year. We didn't particularly want to go to a bar this year, and we declined an offer to go to a friend's friend's place. We, too, don't see the big deal in partying on New Year's Eve being surrounded by obnoxious drunk people (although, there are certain "dignified" things you can do, but going out on New Year's Eve when you don't have your own transportation is such a hassle.) So we got our own bottle of sparkling wine, and some other libations and had a little party of our own watching MuchMoreMusic's Retro New Year's Eve Party. The usual 80's standard videos unfortunately, and only one Depeche Mode video! Grrrr... >:( Oh well, all was fine and good. We still had a good time.
As for today, New Year's Day...I hate American football. I'm watching the World Idol results!! ;D

I never do much on New Year's Eve so it can be boycotted. Can't boycott New Year's Day, though...it is my baby girl's birthday and she wouldn't let me ignore that.
Happy Birthday, Sarah!

I think that when (or if) Dick Clark does die, he will be cryogenically frozen, preserved, and thawed every year just so he can keep doing Dick Clark's New Year's Rockin' Eve...::)

No no...you don't get it... If Dick Clark was cryogenically frozen to preserve him, and then thawed every New Year's Eve, no one would replace him because he'd be preserved so he could keep doing it himself! Even if he had to have someone speaking for him, as if he was a ventriloquist's dummy, he'd still be on TV doing his yearly New Year's Eve show! ;D

;D You are hilarious. I can somehow see that happening though. ::)

When I think of New Years' Eve and New Years' Day, I think back of when I was growing up. I can not believe how fast I grew up. But I am thankful for where I am at today, even though I dwell into the past every now and then. On the 14th of this month, I will be 27. The last 20 years really got my mind going about the things I have done. ::)

Yeah, I agree it's a lot of hype, but I guess thats by our own doing.
I mean, when we were kids it was Christmas that was the REAL day we were waiting for (the toys & santa, etc.).
As we got older, the "toys" we wanted got a little more pricey (didn't really expect to see that Ferrari under the tree at 18 did you?). And we were swept up in the other side of the holidays like other adults, shopping, spending $$, crowds, etc. A real hassle..some of the joy of Christmas was gone.
But then New Years Eve was the night to let go..in my late teens/20's the parties made up for not being a kid anymore.
But that gets old too, and we're left with watching others get really hammered, sometimes the only time these types come out (amateurs night, I call it), and watching some silly marathon of shows on cable.
It's a symtom of getting older, I expecting some magic of the holidays to come back once I have some rug-rats on my own..but later, not sooner.

I watched Dick Clark on New Year's Eve too, only it was a marathon of the $100,000 pyramid on Game Show Network!

Ugh... You didn't by any chance watch the Lingo marathon on New Year's Day too, did you? :P Ah...Chuck Woolery. An 80's game show icon. :D

No, I didn't catch that but sometimes I watch the repeats of "Love Connection". I thought that show they did about him last summer, "Naturally Stoned" was kind of interesting.
