Subject: Cheesy 80s songs.

Written By: ahhh_stick_em on 12/27/03 at 10:16 a.m.

Electric Avenue by Eddy Grant was so cheese but it tasted so good. "We're going to rock on down to Electric Avenue then we take it Higher!" What the heck was he going on about? Probably a drug reference of some sort. Anyway, another song would have to be Sam Rockwell's hit with MJ, Somebody's Watching Me. Also, who could forget that band, that band I already forgot the name to....ha. Yes, Musical Youth?
Heh, that song Pass the Douchie. Another cheese deluxe topped with possible ambigious drug references. Sweet.

Um, that would be "Pass the Dutchie" ("Pass the Douchie" would refer to...something else maybe).  The song, written by the late reggae great Jackie Mitoo was originally "Pass the Kouchie," or ganja, spliff, weed, reefer, Mary Jane, Puff the Magic Dragon....

I'm thinking of REALLY CHEESY '80s songs, I mean Easy Cheese level cheesy:
Charlene: I've Never Been to Me
Sylvia: Nobody (you know "Well your nobody called today, she hung up when I asked her name, Well I wonder, does she think she's being clever?")
Air Supply: Making Love Out of Nothing At All (just heard this one today!)
Sheena Easton: Morning Train
Olivia Newton John: Physical
Eric Carmen: Hungry Eyes
Rick Springfield: Affair of the Heart
Jack Wagner: All I Need
speaking of General Hospital--
The Afternoon Delights: General Hos-pit-al
Donna Summer: She Works Hard for the Money
(I didn't realize what that song was REALLY about until I was 30!!  :-[ )
The other guy from Miami Vice: The other guy from Miami Vice's one hit
Bonnie Tyler: Holding Out for a Hero
Laura Brannigan: Gloria
I'll stop before this list gets obnoxiously long.  :-X

Wang Chung-Dance Hall Days.

This song is so cheesy.

I mean one of the lines include:

"pull your baby by the wrist, first her mouth, then her fist"

sounds like he's singing about wanting to rape a girl. ::) :o

"Safety Dance" was rumored to be an anti-nukes protest, and by some to refer to proper contraception.

Depeche Mode's "But Not Tonight" was widely believed to be about masturbation

Anyway, about Men Without Hats, have you heard their albums? Man, that's some cheesy music.  Especially "Living In China," has that line "got ping pong, egg foo yong, all of the people that are living in China..." something like that.

Real Life was another cheesy band.  "We are bleeding babies on a playground battlefield..."

Actually, according to Casey Casem, it was written because of people getting hurt while slam-dancing.  The tempo was slow enough that the popular slam-dance wouldn't really work.

I too heard this from Casey Kasem.  I was a weekly ATF listener in 1983.  Can you believe Casey is STILL doing ATF?
Anyway, Ivan of MWH confirmed the anti-slam dancing theory.  He also added an interesting twist.  In the Montreal clubs it was Ivan himself who used to get hassled by the bouncers for his "pogo" dancing.  He wrote "Safety Dance" in response, thus, there's a little sarcasm in the song.

Howard Jones was always cheesy, but I always liked him.  In fact, there's A LOT of music I would call "cheesy" that I like.  Cheese is an aesthetic in itself.  There's good cheese and bad cheese.  The list I submitted to this thread is what I'd call bad cheese.  Icehouse, Spandau Ballet, Ultravox, Soft Cell, and Heaven 17 are examples of good cheese (if we are to stick to '80s cheesy pop music).  ;D

Don't know where you've been, but Casey Kasem hasn't hosted "AT40" in over 15 years! His last show as host was on August 6, 1988 - a sad day, indeed. Starting August 13, 1988, Shadoe Stevens replaced him. Stevens remained its host until the show's demise on January 28, 1995...

For a good read on Kasem and the show's entire history, I highly recommend picking up the book, American Top 40: The Countdown of the Century by Rob Durkee (Schirmer Books; 1999). It's in hardcover, and the cover price is $24.95...

"Jesse's Girl" The Misrhymed Lyrics:

Ohhhh....you know what happened? OK, the only place I hear Top 40 radio these days is at the gym.  So, I was there the other day, and I hear Casey doing the year-end Top 100 of 2003.  I was surprised because I thought he retired in the '80s.  I thought, "Huh, maybe he came back," and went on with my workout.  I guess was just on doing a special.  Tell you the truth, I didn't know AT40 was no more.  I assumed it was still a syndicated program that stations still subscribed to.  I'm pretty lost on commercial FM!

Sorry, I didn't mean to imply that when CK left "AT40" in the Summer of '88, he retired from radio altogether - far from it, actually. About 5 months later, on January 21, 1989, he returned as host of a new weekly syndicated radio countdown show that he created himself, called "Casey's Top 40", which lasted well into the '90s - but it had nothing to do w/ the "Billboard" charts! (And because they were so similar, many people confused his new show w/ "AT40".) People never really embraced Stevens as host of "AT40", and the show slowly died, as it went head-to-head w/ CK's new show, as well as "The Rick Dees Weekly Top 40". Of course, as you recently heard at the gym, CK is still alive & well on radio today, hosting countdown specials... :-)

Actually, bj26 is correct - "moot" is the word that Springfield uses in the song! AT40 without Casey Kasem is like Fantasy Island without Tattoo!  I do remember hearing about "Casey's Top 40."  Casey also did a Casey's Top 10 (don't remember exactly what it was called) TV show in the '80s, with videos.  That top 10 wasn't the same as the top 10 on the Billboard charts.
I sometimes listened to Dick Clark's top 30, but Rick Dees always bugged me.  He is the one who gave us "Disco Duck."  He'll have to answer for that someday!

You're thinking of "America's Top 10", a 30-minute countdown show which CK hosted during the early to mid '80s; it was essentially the TV version of "AT40", only in condensed form. I watched it and the 60-minute "Solid Gold" religiously, and they both aired on Saturday mornings in SoCal, where I lived at the time. And contrary to what you said above, "America's Top 10" was also based on the "Billboard" charts (but "Solid Gold" was not - they had their own formula!)...

Quoting:...but Rick Dees always bugged me.  He is the one who gave us "Disco Duck."  He'll have to answer for that someday!

Over the years, I've come to realize that Rick Dees (and his sense of humor) is something that people either love or hate. As I mentioned above, I spent my teen years (i.e., the '80s) growing up in SoCal, where Dees was the morning DJ at KIIS in Los Angeles. Top 40 radio was my format in those days, and KIIS was my station! :-) Circa 1983-84, top 40 radio was at its creative peak, IMO, w/ a wide variety of musical genres represented and much lengthier playlists than are offered today - and listening to KIIS at that time was almost magical, as they could seemingly do no wrong! (Think "Billie Jean", followed by "Cool Places", "Cruel Summer", "White Horse", "Ain't Nobody", "Round and Round", etc.) So needless to say, I got pretty used to Mr. Dees, and grew to enjoy his humor (most of the time). In fact, I have all of his albums, including his 1976 debut w/ the infamous "Disco Duck" (which I admit is a very corny song!). However, his later albums from the mid '80s are actually quite funny, w/ their novelty songs ("Eat My Shorts", etc.) and "Candid Phone" skits, among other antics. :-) But admittedly, it's been my experience that folks who grew up in, say, Texarkana or Poughkeepsie - i.e., away from Dees' exposure - seem to have a harder time adjusting to and/or understanding his brand of humor. Ah, now if we could just go back to top 40 radio the way it was around 1983-84 (*sigh*)... :-)

I'm glad I'm not the only one who recognizes the greatness of the early '80s for Top 40.  I'd extend these golden years to 1981-1984, with 1983 being tops.  For me, it was all about the second "British Invasion," and the "New Wave."  Where punk had crumbled the old rock establishment, it had little Top 40 potential.  New Wave came about due to the creative license given by punk.  The catchy synth-riffs and terse melodies were perfect for the singles charts.  New Wave, of course, is a fluid genre encompassing all kinds of styles.  This was appreciated by the compilers of the "New Wave Hits of the '80s" CDs.
I latched onto New Wave because it was a breath of fresh air.  I hated the oversexed sleaze of '70s cock rock.  I especially despised Kiss and Led Zeppelin (I like Zep now, still hate Kiss, though, sorry Kiss fans).  The established rock sounds of The Eagles, Boston, Steve Miller Band, Aereosmith, Lynard Skynard, Heart, Styx, and co., did nothing for me.  I wasn't a fan of disco or funk.
Something magic happened when I heard songs by Devo, Soft Cell, Human League, AFOS, B-52's, Gary Numan, and so on.  I remember way back when "M" went to the top of the charts with "Pop Musik," people treated it like a novelty hit, but I heard something more there.
One of the things I liked about New Wave the way it took the raunchy sexuality so lionized in rock and just drained it.  You had the free love sexual revolution, and you had hedonistic disco culture so pervasive that by 1980 we were steeped in ass all the time.
Then as now, kids were exposed to too much sexuality before they're sexually mature.  I was always very reserved and didn't like all this ass all over the place.
When guys started getting on stage with short hair and skinny ties, and playing cute pop songs again, I was all for it.
Rockers described New Wave as "cold" and "sterile."  I liked it like a lemonade stand in hell!
Back to the top 40s--I'm remember the tide changing.  It was the second half of 1984 when my interest in top 40 waned rapidly.  Fortunately, the '80s "alternative" music was right around the corner!

Also cheesy, from the 80s and about the aforementioned topic is 'Dancing With Myself' by Billy Idol. I like it though ;D

My list consists of:

Glen Medieros - Never Gonna Change My Love For You
Billy Ocean - Get Outta My Dreams (Get Into My Car)
Most of Wham!s music - but I love it also!
Anything by Bananarama
Come to think of it, anything by Stock, Aitken and Waterman! (Even though I dos till like *some* of it)
...there are so many from the 80s - far too many to mention.

Oh yeah, I love HoJo, but he's definitely got some cheesy songs.  The cheesiest (well, among the cheesiest) is Life in One Day, a litany of "think positive" cliches.  It's almost as dopy as Bobby McFerrin's Don't Worry, Be Happy.  I love the calypso-flavored tune of Life in One Day, and the remixes are great! 8)

IMO, there's two types of "cheese": Good Cheese ("guilty pleasures"/ "So Bad It's Good" category) & Bad Cheese (Just Plain Bad), like I mentioned earlier with New Kids, Tiffany, & Don Johnson.  8)

Here's some that are "So Bad It's Good":  8)

"Mickey" Toni Basil
"I Eat Cannibles" Total Coelo
"Shiny, Shiny" Haysee Fantayzee (Sp?)
"Seventeen" Winger
"Cherry Pie" Warrant Though from 1990
"Somebody's Watching Me" Rockwell
"Show Me" The Cover Girls
"Wait" White Lion
"Head To Toe" Lisa Lisa & Cult Jam
"Rhythm Of The Night" DeBarge
"Crush On You" & "Make It Real" The Jets

Casey Kasem started doing "American Top 20" in the 90's which was the countdown of the top 20 adult contemporary hits, although I've heard that he's planning to retire from that too.  Thoughout the late 70's and even into the early 80's a lot of Top 40 stations were still playing that same old mellow music (yawn). Thank god early MTV came along to give New Wave artists that much needed exposure.
