Subject: Re: any one remember burger chef, and two guys
Burger chef I'm too familiar with, but the store "TWO GUYS" I remember. My Mom and Dad used to shop there sometimes.
I believe "TWO GUYS" opened their doors in the 70's, but their demise came in the late 80's. Goodbye to 'ol nostalgia!

Was Burger Chef a major chain somewhere in the U.S.? I don't have a clue to where they were located. Was it in your area growing up?

Burger Chef was a chain of hamburger places. If I remember correctly, they tasted very similar to Burger King. I don't know if they were national or not, but I do know that they had quite a few restaurants in the midwest. I am from Columbus, OH and there were probably a dozen or so here. They folded somewhere in the early to mid 70s.

I remember Two Guys. How about Genos burger joint. They had the best play area where we lived.

yeah, Burger Chef probably couldn't handle the competition of Burger King.
Subject: Re: any one remember burger chef, and two guys
We used to have a couple here in the Detroit area as well. They went out of business around the same time as Taco Plaza (Anyone remember those?), and, in this area at least, Jack in the Box.

Does anyone remember "Arthur Treachers"? It was a fish and chips spot. I remember going to one here in the Newyork with my parents and relatives back in the 70's and mid 80's.. But,I don't know if they're still around... Jack in the box sounds very familiar, though, Speedbird12

There was a Two Guys in Philly at Red Lion Rd and the Boulevard. It was later Jefferson Ward, Bradlees, and a bunch of other things that went under!

No, they could not have gone under in the 70's. They probably folded in the mid 80's. I used to live up in Michigan back in the early 1980's, and I remember as a small child my parents would take me to Burger Chef all the time. I still have Burger Chef cups and mugs from that time period.
Jack in the Box is still around, it was kind of a bit player back in the 80's but these days it has become a MAJOR chain that rivals McDonalds, Burger King, Wendys. I remember back in the 80's Jack in the Box used to have the literal springing "Jack in the Box" logo. From the 90's to present day they seemed to have just setteled with the regular old box and ofcourse "Jack".
There was another burger joint that I remember used to be around up north called Hardy's. Does anyone remember Hardy's? Are they still around? They were kinda like the present day Whataburger.

Yes I remember Hardy's. I remember in the early 80's,when I would travel down south to Virginia, I would see and visit many Hardy's restuarants. It's a major chain in the south. Actually, I think it's spelled "HARDEES".
When I traveled south a few years ago, I still saw a few chains down there. :) yep, they're still around...never heard of "whataburger",though.(sorry). :-/

In fact, Burger Chef was bought out by Hardee's in the early-mid 80s.
Subject: Re: any one remember burger chef, and two guys
I think you are right about Hardees buying out Burger Chef. I live in the midwest and Hardees are pretty common here. On the west coast I think they are called Carl's Jr. I grew up in the south and remember Burger Chef fondly. They were the only place in town that gave toys to the kids. I think their "kids meals" even pre-dated McD's happy meals.

I grew up in eastern Ohio in the 70s/80s and remember Burger Chef & Jeff well. That was the only place to get Star Wars glasses & toys with your kids meal in '77. I think Burger King had the rights for Empire & Jedi.

Wow!! Awesome website "Fett69"! After seeing that website,I feel ashamed to say I've never heard of "Burger Chef" until this thread. Thanks for the info. ;)

Hardees I remember. I know there was one here in The Bronx, my father used to take us there on the weekends. I don't think there were any Burger Chefs on this side of the country. I've never seen any in the NYC area.

Cool! a fellow Bronxite! Which area do you live in? I'm in the Bronx Zoo section, (near Southern Blvd.)
Anyway,I didn't know that,mtadude65, There's a Hardee's here in the Bronx? That's a new one to me! :o With the exemption of Burger King, McDonald's and Wendy's, The closest take-out we have to "Burger Chef" is "WHITECASTLE", according to my knowledge. ??? :)

There are 2 Arthur Treacher's restaurants here in Columbus. They are independently owned and I have never eaten there.

Great site! It was good seeing pictures of Burger Chef. I had forgotten what they looked like! Thanks!

You know what I still haven't had? White Castle burgers. Those legendary little burgers you eat by the half dozen and contain some secret flavor ingredient. Folks tell me you may belch three days later and taste White Castle! I'm a lifelong New Englander, and White Castle never made it up this far (though Krispy Kreme is having a go of it). Next time I'm in the NYC area, I'll have to stop for some. 8)

Whitecastle HB's are very tasty, but take it from me buddy, you won't just "belch up" whitecastle (if you know what I mean) ;) you'll be running to the bathroom after those laxatives. Ask anybody in NYC whose ate them :)...Anyway, that's our form of "Burger Chef".
and oh yeah...Krispy Kreme donuts are sinfully delicious!!!!

I agree with Deemoe - it's not belching you're going to be doing! ::) They are quite good, but after you down a few, you are done for a couple months. Then the urge hits you and you go slam down a few more. Just a word of advice, make sure you have a bathroom nearby after your White Castle adventure!

Yeah, as been stated, Jack in the box is very popular on the West Coast (when I went out there it was the first time i've seen one in years). The one by my house here in Metro Detroit was converted to a flower shop, of all things!
I also remember Arthur Treachers, we used to have them all over the place, and when I was a kid, my aunt used to bring that home for us when she came home from work. Don't know why they closed down over here... :(
As for Hardee's, there is only one out here that I know of, and it is DIRTY. It is the one of the few places where the workers don't wear gloves when they cook your food, and the food is terrible besides (not nearly as good as what I remember from my early youth). When I went out to Kansas City, I seen quite a few in that area, so they still have some degree of popularity (they are probably better out there, but have never tried them).
Subject: Re: any one remember burger chef, and two guys
There's a bunch of Hardees where I live, and about a year ago the whole chain changed their menu--they went from having hotdogs, chicken, and other stuff to now primarily selling huge hamburgers, like 3/4 pounders and stuff like that.

Glad you are a fellow Bronxite D, the Hardee's I'm talking about used to be near the location of the old Korvettes which is now Kmart on the Bruckner Expressway service road and White Plains road. That was a long time time ago. Anyway, I'm located by the Van Courtland Park area.
Have a Happy New Year!!!!!! ;D

Well, wait a minute, one guy says I'll be going for the laxatives, another guy says to make sure there's a bathroom nearby. Which is it? Does Whitecastle gum up the works or give you the runs? Or, could it be, gulp, both? ???
It can't be as bad as Bob's Big Boy. Anyplace that's relegated to state turnpikes is trouble. Turnpike motorists are a captive clientele. Anyway, you eat one of those in Jersey, it'll still be with you in Georgia!
Say, I heard of the this burger chain out west, Carl's Jr., that prints Biblical chapter and verse numbers on their wrappers and containers. Not actual Scripture quotes, just the numbers, i.e. John 3:16. Why? Are they so noxious you gotta go pray after you eat? ;D

Sorry about that,"MaxwellSmart" :-/... What I meant to say was, you'll be running to the bathroom because Whitecastle burgers will "act" as laxatives on you. "Stingr22" and I are still on the same page.... And oh yeah, They're worst than Bob's Big Boys on the Turnpike.( I had those a few times, also). ;D hehe.

I Loved Burger Chef!
It wasn't bought by Hardee's, it became Hardee's.
I remember during Halloween, they had little flexi-disc 45's with a spooky halloween story on them, and each different story came on a different colored flexidisc!
I'm 35 and live in Florida, but until 1980 I lived in Louisville, KY and the transition to Hardee's was made (according to my aunt) in the early 80's- We also had Burger Queen with Queenie Bee, which tasted almost just like Burger King.
Ahh...that's sad isn't it? I loved Fastfood Hamburgers when i was a kid.
