Hi Layla. Good idea, nice to see some younger crowd into the 80's as well. First off check local hand me down stores, and second you can always do an online search for 80's nostalgia clothing or something of that sort.
Onto ideas.
1.) If you want to be ultra scary go buy some DayGlo. (if you can find that horrible stuff)
2.)I guess this is a prom and should be formal. Get yourself a dress with big puffy shoulders. That would be very 80's. Maybe you could add some sorta thick glasses to it for a laugh. Maybe the dress cold be sparkly as well.
Anyway it isn't perfect but remember the rule of 80's dress. Glam it up, sparkly and big!
Good Luck Layla
Daniel

I always find charity shops are full of 80's style dresses....probably due to women finally being able to part with their favourite teenage outfit...

Thrift stores and such are great places to find 80s prom and party dresses. My favorite prom dresses from the 80s all had big poufy skirts with layers of netting/crinolines under them. They sorta looked like a 50s/southern belle style. Good luck dress hunting and have fun!

If you dress like Madonna, Cyndi Lauper, and/or Molly Ringwald in the early 80s, they looked like a combination of a ragamuffin and country bumpkin. Reference movie, Mary Poppins and hick, Minnie Pearl, for style ideas.

I was born in '76 so I was still rather too young to fully experience the 80s, but I suggest watching Pretty In Pink to get some ideas. From what I've seen from that movie, through magazines, and fuzzy memories from my youth, here are my suggestions:
choose a dress with a poufy-ish skirt
in a pastel hue
or in a bright metallic colour such as metallic fushia or metallic royal blue
don't be shy about colourful make-up including the lips and eyes
teast that hair. ie. perm it or put half up

But don't copy the awful dress in the Pretty (or Ugly?) in Pink finale. That's nowhere near '80s; closest, that dress is the worst of the '60s (which is saying alot!).
I haven't really seen the movie in ages (saw a little several months ago), but if I recall it seems pretty accurate for every-day dress. Copying parts of Annie Potts is esp. good (but not the whole thing, if you want normal person).
As for more formal wear - what they said above, pretty much. Altho I didn't notice too much different from 1 era to another (once again). Somewhat puffy shoulders is OK but better off the shoulder, not on.
