Subject: Smell-o-vision

Written By: Anil Patel on 12/11/03 at 12:09 a.m.

ok this is a true test as to whether you are young or old like me....for all those that don't remember i know you're too young, because i know this was such a huge thing and they marketed it so much that there is virtually no way for you not to have heard of it

SMELL-O-VISION

it was some primetime tv show event...i remember it had john ritter in it but i don't remember who else...but i remember you had to go to like 7-11 or something and pick up this smell card..and through out the course of the show there would be this little icon or clue shown on the screen and you would have to scratch and sniff the corresponding smell on the card....and that's how this show worked...it had to be in the mid eighties sometime because i remember i lived in fort worth when this happened....i don't remember the show in particular...or what happened i just remember that it did happen

am i just crazy or does anyone else remember this? there was this smellovision concept in the sixties involving theaters and scents coming out of the chairs..but this isn't what i'm talking about...please let me know, or if you can find anything on the web about it....

I'm sorry, I don't remember this at all and I thought I was old!!

...And as for that 60's attempt, who would want to smell ANYTHING that came out of theater seats. Ewww!  No wonder it didn't catch on. ;D

i don't know if it would be there under john ritter's stuff..cause it was like a made for tv movie...fun thing....it was really cheesy and dumb....it might not have been a show...but dispersed throughout many shows on the evening lineup...like during cheers they would have one, then during the next show they would have one..i think it might have been the sunday night lineup.....i wish i could find something...it's so eighties though..i bet you someone has that smellovision card laying around somewhere...

Couldn't find anything in the 80's, but when i Googled I found this http://www.ajc.com/opinion/content/opinion/0603/19nebel.html as late as 1999.

I don't remember this, but I do remember "Odor-Rama".

When you went to see "Polyester" when it first came out, you got this large cardboard card with all these number and scratch-and-sniff squares on it.

During certain parts of the movie, a number would appear.  You sniffed the number on the card and you got a smell appropriate with the scene.  I remember that a sex scene got you a smell like burning rubber.

This is the only case like this I can remember.

Some may say 12 is too young to see a movie as perverse as Polyester, but I saw it anyway.  I remember the "Odor-Rama" card.  Other smells included: a skunk (picnic scene), oven gas (scene where Lu-Lu Fishpaw tries to off herself), intestinal gas (emitted by Elmer Fishpaw in bed), roses & dirty sneakers (in scene of cruelty to Francine Fishpaw by her sadistical mother).

If you have an Odor-Rama card in mint condition, it's probably worth some bucks...somewhere.

Any other John Waters fans out there?  :D

I've heard of smell-o-vision years ago in the early 80's, but just not quite like the way you described it.  I remember a local movie theatre was talking about doing it on a trial basis.  I heard it didn't work too well.

Google "Smell-o-vision" brought up lotsa links.

No, I don't remember it, but I do remember that they tried to have 3-D on tv. You had to buy the glasses somewhere and watch the show with the glasses. It was done with a horror tv movie (or show) and it was done with a telecast of a Rolling Stones concert. It worked somewhat.

Never saw a movie with smells except for Its Tough To Be a Bug in DisneyWorld where you "smell" the stink bug!

I remember this being done in Britain probably about the same time.  I think it was after the craze for 3-D programmes.

From memory some newspapers gave the scratch and sniff cards out probably with a Saturday edition.  I think there were two or three special programmes made for early Saturday evening viewing.

I can't pinpoint the date at all but will ask around see if anyone else remembers it.

I think Scratch and Sniff cards would work today. ;D
