I like Last Christmas by Wham and Something About Christmastime by ??. Also, Paul McCartney's A Wonderful Christmastime.
Subject: Re: 80s Christmas Songs
Of course, here are a few that nobody can forget:
Dear Mister Jesus - Sharon Batts
Grandma Got Run Over By A Reindeer - Elmo & Patsy
Rudolph The Red Nosed Reindeer - The California Raisins
Christmas in the Caribbean - Jimmy Buffett
Subject: Re: 80s Christmas Songs
"Last Christmas I gave you my heart and the very next day you threw it away." :'(
My sisters were huge Wham fans especially George Michael fans. I cringe when I hear that song now and must change the station. As far as other Christmas songs, I love the standards like Rudolph and so forth.

AFOS 1983,
You're the man! I love your AFOS graphic. I had that 12," with the super-extended "Wishing" mix. However, the B-Side, "Committed" used to get stuck in my head and drive my nuts! I used to do my hair up like Mike Score, but it never came out as well because it wasn't long enough. :-/ My feelings about the band are bittersweet because of what they became in 1985! You know, after Paul Reynolds quit.
Anyway, don't forget that "Do They Know It's Christmas?" was written by Sir Bob Geldof AND Midge Ure. The latter of one of my favorite '80s bands, Ultravox.

Thanks Max, You know A Flock of Seagulls is my favorite band, and I'm only 25. You might like to know that On October 27th 2003 - Mike Score, Paul Reynolds, Frank Maudsley and Ali Score the original members of A Flock of Seagulls reunited one more time. They performed some songs that will appear on an upcoming VH1 television special set to air in January. This is a one-off show and the first time they've been together since 1985. For further details on this show go to the official A Flock of Seagulls website. http://www.airbornedivision.com/index.php

AFOS 1983,
I'm glad to see AFOS is still attracting new fans. I think I'll start an AFOS thread so I don't hijack this one. I don't have much to say about xmas songs because, well, I hate them!

Another one I thought of was "Thank God It's Christmas" by Queen. That's a good one!
Subject: Re: 80s Christmas Songs
I don't think I could come up with a Top Five, but I absolutely love "Fairytale Of New York" by The Pogues and Kirsty MacColl. I also love "Do They Know It's Christmas?" despite however much money really went towards famine relief. It was still a great song, and a great idea.
Speaking of the latter, how many of you have heard and remember the re-recording of "Do They Know It's Christmas?" by Band Aid II? Any thoughts? I...didn't like it at all....:P
Oh, another great Christmasy song is "Stop The Cavalry" by Jona Lewie. :)
Absolutely Vile

My 10 cents...
1. Last Christmas, George Michael
2. Do they know it's Christmas, Band Aid (it's mandatory)
3. Rockin around the Christmas Tree, Kim Wilde and Mel & Smith
4. Can't think of anything else decent - it was all a bit tosh
Subject: Re: 80s Christmas Songs
Oh, I got it:
The McKenzie Brothers: Twelve Days of Christmas
(...and a beer, on my knee. Yeah dat beer's empty)
Weird Al Yankovic: Christmas at Ground Zero
Cheech & Chong: Santa Claus & his Old Lady
Others mentioned that I do like:
The Pogues: Fairytale of New York
Monty Python: It's Christmas in Heaven
(Tony Bennett spoof)
From the '70s, but worth an '80s mention:
The Kinks: Father Christmas
Band Aid: Do They Know it's Christmas
Subject: Re: 80s Christmas Songs
In no particular order:
1. Do they know it's Christmas - Band Aid
2. Last Christmas - Wham!
3. Thank God it's Christmas - Queen
4. Mistletoe and wine - Cliff Richard
5. Little drummer boy - New Kids on the Block (don't think it was a single, but it's a favourite from their Christmas album)

Absolutely Vile,
I didn't mean to indicate "Do They Know it's Christmas?" as being from the '70s. I remember the whole thing, the song, the video, even Glenn Gregory of Heaven 17 being in the video for a second! We in the states knew the phenomenon better as "Feed The World," and in 1985 the Yanks responded with "We Are the World," written by Michael Jackson & Lionel Ritchie.
Subject: Re: 80s Christmas Songs
Not really a Xmas song, but I connect it with Xmas since its from the movie "Scrooged"- its "Put a Little Love in your Heart" by Al Green and Annie Lennox

If I'm not mistaken, I believe the Band Aid money did all go straight to famine relief, but the Live Aid money is what may have got misdirected. I could be wrong, but that's how I remember it. :)

Oh OK, sorry. It just looked like you said it was from the 70's.
After you Yanks responded with "We Are The World," we hopped on the bandwagon with "Tears Are Not Enough," written, I believe, by David Foster, Bryan Adams and Jim Vallance. (<sigh> We're always the last to do everything. :() Well, I'm glad the UK started it all with the best effort! :)

I know it's a bit melancholy but I love "2000 Miles" by the Pretenders.
Subject: Re: 80s Christmas Songs
Tears are not Enough? Hmmm...I don't remember that one. I remember the song of that title on ABC's "Lexicon of Love" (BTW a great record from start to finish). Send the Ethiopians some beer, eh?

"Merry Christmas"-The Waitresses.

Stringr22,
There IS one line where the McKenzie brothers sing
"And a beer...on my knee," rather than "in a tree," and then one goes, "Yeah dat beer's empty."
Yes, we have no life! :P

You're right! We have no life! ;D That song slays me!
I will have to listen closely next time and pick up on it! Thanks!

By far, my favorite Xmas song of the 80's is
No Presents For Christmas by King Diamond
http://www.sunpoint.net/~kingdiamond/images/nopresents.jpg
Christmas time is here again
Santa needs a helping hand
We cannot find his evil sheet
To draw his laying for the night
So all the waiting christmas trees
Gonna hear their master sing....
There's no presents, Not this Christmas
There's no presents
Tom and Jerry, Drinking Sherry
They don't give a damn
Christmas time is here again
Santa needs a helping hand
It's getting very, very late
St.Peter's crossed the Golden Gate
An Donald Duck is still in bed
I wonder who he's gonna help
There's no presents, Not this christmas
There's no presents
Tom and Jerry, All done Sherry
They don't give a damn

Did they do "Silent Night," too? I know for a Christmas special Bing Crosby did in 1977, he and David Bowie sang "Little Drummer Boy/Peace On Earth." I love that song, and I see the clip every Christmas. :)

Subject: Re: 80s Christmas Songs
You're right, Vile, it was the Drummer Boy song I was thnking of, seems like Silent Night would have been their style as well.

Although Bowie & Bing's Drummer Boy originated in 1977, it's fair game for the '80s because it got so much more exposure on MTV.

This started playing on the radio the instant I clicked on this thread.
Madonna's "Santa baby" almost made me throw up (a very common reaction of mine to her "music"). Talk about ruining a perfectly good song.

Another 2 I was recently reminded of...
"Santa Baby", by Madonna, and "Silent Night", by Stevie Nicks. :)

"Merry Christmas"-The Waitresses
"Do They Know It's Christmas"- Band Aid
"Last Christmas"- Wham ;D

Vile, you are correct. Bing & Bowie only did "Little Drummer Boy." It was done right before Bing Crosby's death in 1977.
