Subject: Re: Name all the concerts you've ever been to.....
A couple of notable concerts I've been to are Depeche Mode during the Music For the Masses Tour. The opening band was none other than OMD. Gawd, what a pretentious name.
Orchestal Manuevers in the Dark, hah! Anyway, another favorite of mine was The Cure during the Kiss Me Kiss Me Kiss Me Tour. That was actually my first concert. My brother took me to see them. Great Concert. All other concerts during than time frame pale in comparison.
During my High School Days, it was very trendy to wear the concert shirt the next day at school. I remember seeing kids wear their Purple Rain era Prince t-shirts. Another popular t-shirt during that time was U2's Joshua Tree. I just remember how cool I thought that was so I would wear my older brother's Iron Madien, Judas Priest, Journey t-shirts to school as if I went that concert. How pathetic. Hah! Tres Cool.

Subject: Re: Name all the concerts you've ever been to.....
Hmm, not many here either. Just never had the money and time together at the same time.
In the late eighties, my brother worked for JVC, and he got us both tickets and backstage passes for the Houston Jazz festival. Saw some very prominent heavy hitters. George Benson, Miles Davis, the list goes on, old and new. My brother and I are standing backstage, when someone gets our attention, and nods the other direction. Out of the dressing rooms walks Miles Davis, blowing silently through his horn on his way to the stage. Passed about 5 foot from us. Made my day, hehe.
Stevie Ray Vaughn and Double trouble. In Step tour. He was killed only a few months later. I am GLAD I went. Jeff Beck pailed by comparison, my brother and I left early. Come to think of it, the place I saw them in has been replaced by a megatheater for the arts. Kind of sad, but money marches on.
David Bowie, in Tin Machine. A pretty good show, although we had to listen to a metallica wannabe band first. Not a good mix, hehe.
Somewhere around this time I saw Billy Gibbons in a late night bar in Houston. He was not playing there, but a customer. They closed the place down in minutes, of course Billy and two girls he walked in with got to stay.:D
Sting, in the mid nineties, in an outdoor arena. Amazing show!! Roxxanne, had this huge red flood light that came on when he sang Red Light. Rained on us, but still didn't make anyone leave! I swear not one person moved as the rain began.

split enz - final concert @ festival hall,melbourne 85?
End Quote
I sure would like to have seen that one! Split Enz was such a unique and magical band. Never got to see them myself.
I won't wrack my brain trying to remember all of them, but here are some comments:
I wish I'd pushed to go see The Police w/AFOS & The Fixx in'83, and Talking Heads that same summer. Anyway, my first concert was:
Howard Jones w/Marshall Crenshaw 11/85
--The Dream Into Action tour (loved Howie!)
some sweet faves:
Depeche Mode 6/86
--The Black Celebration tour (for my favorite DM album)
The Cure, summer '86, '87
(there ain't no blues for the summertime Cure)
Midnight Oil, 1988
The Pogues, Joe Strummer in lieu of Shane, 1991
King Crimson, 1994
David Bowie w/Nine Inch Nails, 1995
Laurie Anderson, 1995
The Legendary Pink Dots, various years
--LPD, my all time favorite band many have never heard of...
In more recent years I've dropped out of the "concert" scene, finding the process of getting and going too expensive and tedious. I enjoy classical and jazz live more than rock and pop these days. Anyway,
Some let downs:
Missing the Smiths in '86
--I relied on a very pretty girl who said she'd get us tickets, she didn't. I didn't tell her off because I was hoping I'd get to sleep with her (I didn't! :-[)
Echo and the Bunnymen '88
--can you say Echo and the BORING men?
A Flock of Seagulls '88
--see the AFOS thread!
Erasure, 1990
--Might as well stay home and listen to the records, unless you like to watch Andy Bell prance around. Wire was supposed to be the opening act (who the hell came up with that idea?), but Wire cancelled, so we had to set thru a horribly cheesy set by Louie Louie (like Rick James meets RuPaul!)
Thompson Twins/OMD, 1985
--didn't get to go. My ride crapped out, and I sure wanted to see OMD :'(
Subject: Re: Name all the concerts you've ever been to.....
Here's my list:
Foriegner/Joe Walsh
Billy Joel (4X)

U2
Elton John

Depeche Mode
INXS
Simple Minds
Tears For Fears
Chicago
Genesis
Eric Clapton
Don Henley

I wish I had seen the Eagles "When Hell Freezes Over" tour. Also on my list of bands I wish I had seen would be The Rolling Stones, Van Halen (with DLR), New Order. Wang Chung and David Bowie.

Bj26, saw the Tubes in the 80's at JFK Stadium with Bryan Adams, John Cougar, Sammy Hagar and Journey. Saw Todd Rundgren at Tower Theater years ago and also at a free show at Fairmount Park. Earth day or something. Saw Pretenders about a year and a half ago at Tower. Chrissy was not that young, but still great.

I've Never been to a Concert.
Subject: Re: Name all the concerts you've ever been to.....
Too numerous to name!
I've seen every major and minor act that came through the Dallas/Fort Worth area during the 80"-87" era. If they played
Texas Stadium, The Dallas Convention Center,Reunion, The
Cotton Bowl, or Bronco Bowl. I had the good fortune of working for a company that supplied the ushers for these events. This company was owned by a family friend, so I started my first gig at the ripe old age of 12 as a junior usher.
Honestly, I've seen almost all of the "80's Greats" at least
twice. Rock, R&B, Rap, Country, Punk, New Wave, you name it. Great memories! I've just begun to introduce my ten year old daughter to last decade of good music, "The 80's". :)

Thanks - my brain really hurts trying to remember all these.
I pretty much stopped going to rock concerts in 1990. Just got bored as hell standing around for hours on end listening to crappy opening bands then having to wait around for another hour or 2 for the headliner. I was always freakin’ tired by the time the bands started that I actually went to see!!!!!
Ani DiFranco – Sucked – dragged there by a girlfriend
Bauhaus
Big Audi Dynamite
Cocteau Twins
Depeche Mode
Echo & The Bunnymen
Erasure
Fishbone
Gene Loves Jezebel
Huey Lewis & the News – went w/ a girlfriend and her mom!?! Surprisingly good show
Jewel – before she was famous – opened for Peter Murphy of all people!!!!!
Joe Walsh – he was drunk and/or stoned – funny as hell – kept forgetting lyrics
Love and Rockets
Moody Blues
New Order x2
OMD
Oingo Boingo x2
Peter Murphy
Porno for Pyros
Reggae Supersplash ‘89
Romantics – saw them in a small nightclub
Steve Winwood
Third World

Underworld – before they were Techno
I’m sure I’ve seen more but I just can’t remember them right now!

Lets see..umm Placebo (and again in March...) Marilyn Manson..peaches, pj harvey, the distillers alkaline trio (don't ask) red hot chili peppers, David Bowie, David gray, qotsa...living in the 21st century is sometimes rather irritating...all the good artists are heading towards their inevitable demise, or have already burnt out.
Subject: Re: Name all the concerts you've ever been to.....
-The Cowsills (anyone remember them?)
-Debbie Boone/B.J. Thomas (I know, I know but I had a friend who wanted to go and didn't want to go alone-I said, what the h. I went. It was ok)
-Blue Oyster Cult (It was a last minute decision to go see them and we ended up with good seats-10 rows from the stage. It was ok)
-Loverboy/Hooters (Hooters sucked, Loverboy was great)
-Bob Dylan (Sucked-worse concert I had been to)
-Meatloaf (The best concert I had been to. It was GREAT!)
-Jethro Tull (last year-the accrostics were awful but the band was great)
There is a local group called The Woods Tea Company I have seen in concert many times. They play a lot of Irish/folk music. They do travel around the country and if they come to your area, I recommend seeing them. They put on a GREAT show.

WOW! :-) That's a lot. When and where did you see the Time? I kind of wish they were still around... I wonder if they would ever start touring again.
Also, looking back on the "List all the CDs you Own" thread from a few months ago, I must say, I admire your very, very wide variety in music. ;-D

Thank you! :) I saw The Time when they opened for Prince in late '82 on the 1999 Tour. This was at the Masonic Temple in Detroit. My father took my brother and I, though it was a birthday present for me. I was a HUGE fan of The Time. I wanted to wear the baggy pants and Stacy Adams shoes because of Morris Day! There are still some pictures of me in a family photo album looking like Morris on the What Time is It? album cover. :D
I'd love for the original Time to reunite again, too. But I wonder if Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis would consider that beneath them now, since they are successful producers.

Well in the past 7 days I have to add to my list
Fleetwood Mac
David Bowie
Meatloaf
:) Busy week in Perth !!
Subject: Re: Name all the concerts you've ever been to.....
At the risk of showing my age, here is a far from complete list.
Peter Frampton (my first), Frank Zappa, Styx, Genesis, Chris Deburgh, Nazareth (and Mahogany Rush which was better), April Wine, Chicago, Yes, Rush, The Eagles, The Nylons, Colin James, Rita Chiarelli, Cheap Trick and ZZ Top, Los Lobos, Robert Cray, Moxy Fruvous, Blackie and The Rodeo Kings (4 or 5 times), Fred Eaglesmith (lots of times), Arlo Guthrey, Lawrence Gowan, Bruce Cockburn, Great Big Sea.
Some of these were in festivals. So they were often the most significant (to me) act at the festival. Coincidentally the one act I regreted missing the most (and twice to boot) was Supertramp. Who would have known they would break up.

That must have cost you a lot! Concerts are too bloody expensive! You went to see the Eurythmic too, they're my favourite band if you didn't already now. I can only see them live on DVD.

Yeah you could be right - I am too afraid to add them up as I may realise I could have paid off my mortgage ten times over !! Especially since I am never satisfied with seeing someone only once.
Aus tickets back in the 80's were under $20 - I remember the first time they went over $30 in 1988 and everyone kicked up a huge stink.
I am just looking at some of my tiks now to see which ones have a price on them.
Hmmm it seems companies here didnt start printing prices on tickets until 1990 !
I have a John Farnham one here for $33.20 in 1990. By 94 he was costing $43.80.
David Bowie in 1983 cost a whopping $19 and by 2004 he cost $155.90 :o
Billy Joel in 1991 cost $41.30, in 1994 $62.90. In 98 with Elton he cost $71.
Neil Diamond in 1992 $44.60, in 1996 $63.90, and by 99 he cost $73.
Meat Loaf in 1985 cost $16.95, in 1993 $44.90 and in 2004 $140. Yowser !
Peter Gabriel in 1994 $48.80
Sting in 1988 was $US18, back in Aus in 96 he cost $53.
The Chris Isaak gigs around Oz in 2002 cost me between $80 and $100 depending on the city. And man did I go to a lot of them - Chris can afford a new car thanks to me !
Good grief ! I gotta give up concerts !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Subject: Re: Name all the concerts you've ever been to.....
Headliner/opening band
Ratt/Bon Jovi/Mama's Boys-----1st concert 1984 I believe (yes Bon Jovi opened for Ratt, that tells you how long ago it was!)
Motley Crue / Y & T --------1985 Theatre of Pain Tour (Loudest concert I have ever been too...my ears rang for 3 days after this show)
Ronnie James Dio / Accept ------1986 Sacred Heart Tour

Aerosmith / Guns N Roses -------1988
Tesla / Firehouse -------1992 or 1993
Bush / Veruca Salt --------1997

There's always a concert you wished you would have seen, but didn't and now regret it. Mine would be Van Halen. (David or Sammy,, doesnt matter, they rock with either)

In the '80s I payed between $20 and $25 for tix at major venues. I noticed prices escalating in the '90s, but by then most of the big acts didn't interest me. If a concert's coming that I absolutely MUST see, I can finagle a guest pass or promo ticket through my radio station. Even so, I find concerts at large venues hardly worth the time. Unless you've got great seats, the performers are too far off to seem real. The music is so processed and amplified it loses its "live" intimacy. In general, I find major concerts more standing in lines, getting poked at by security, and waiting, waiting, waiting than actual musical enjoyment.
:(
I know the artists aren't to blame for the inflated ticket prices, but just who is that is most to blame for the phenomenon? With tickets to platinum-selling acts routinely rising above $150.00, why hasn't the market corrected itself? Are people just willing to shell out more than the can possibly afford, or is every loaded except for me?

I paid about that too, and I used to buy my tickets from a scalper in the early '80's and the venue was always the Spectrum in Philly. No small theatre. I don't know how somewhere along the line these prices just got so out of hand. I went alot of years without going to any concerts and couldn't beleive the prices when I finally did want to start going back. Springsteen cost my husband and I an arm and a leg when we saw him at Giants Stadium last summer, and let me tell you, Bruce might as well have been in another state he seemed so far away. Believe it or not, some groups are fed up with what their fans are paying for tickets. Tom Petty started last summer doing free or low cost concerts at smaller venues and Eddie Vetter (sp) has done the same. Springsteen always makes the box office hold a certain number of tickets back so that a fan can walk up to the box office on the night of the concert and be able to buy a ticket at face value.

Artists of conscience, such as Springsteen, Petty, and Vedder don't want their fans to go broke. They probably don't want their fans to associate them with sky-high prices as well. I don't know, but I'm willing to bet if a ticket goes from $50 to $100.00, the artist doesn't see a penny more of that.
Is the main culprit the promoters or the venues, or both? It seems to me that all these concerts get major corporate sponsorship as well. So much for the idea that advertising will hold down the cost to the consumer.
I would love to see Springsteen play an acoustic show in a club. He'd be wonderful in an atmosphere where you could sit up close and have a few drinks. For obvious reasons, he can't do that for the general public. When all is said and done at a place like the Philly Spectrum, you'd have a more intimate Bruce experience sitting at home with your headphones!
Subject: Re: Name all the concerts you've ever been to.....
I don't know who the culprit is, the venue or the promoter, although Springsteen doesn't use a promoter, he is his own. I read that Vedder an Petty were apalled when they found out how much people were paying to see them and started doing concerts that were not heavily advertised to kind of give something back to fans who had paid through the nose to see them. It's a shame more artists don't think like that.
Bruce would be excellent in an smaller setting, and if I'm not mistaken, he did do some kind of acoustic show in NYC a few years back. It was heavily publicized here at the time. I"ve also heard of him being in the audience at places like the Borgata in Atlantic City and the Stone Pony in Asbury Park where he's gotten up on stage with up and coming acts or established artists that he is a fan of and will do a few songs with them.
But as for the original question, I don't know who is making all the money on these tickets. Probably to a large extent scalpers who scoff the good tickets up in droves and then double or triple the price. As long as people will pay that kind of money, they'll keep doing it.
