Subject: Great 80's Songs in new commercials!

Written By: Katrinawitch on 11/26/03 at 09:39 a.m.

The 80's rule and will never go away!  I just saw a Target Christmas commercial; the theme was kids and their toys, and the song playing in the background was "New Toy" by Lene Lovich.  I love that tune!

Also, there's a great Miller Lite commercial, with people falling down like dominoes, set to "Freedom of Choice" by Devo.  I just love it when 80's tunes show up on mainstream TV!  True, the tunes always seem to be a little bit obscure or new-wave, but I love 'em anyway!

No one replied to this one?

Well, I'm going to.  I did hear Yazoo's "Situation" in a TV commercial recently, for what I can't remember.  Is that really Devo singing that vacuum cleaner jingle to the tune of "Whip It"?  It sure sounds like them.

For YEARS I was trying to reconstruct the "Da Da Da" song, then I heard it on the NWH of the '80s CD series.  Trio, "Da Da Da I Don't Love You You Don't Love Me Uh huh Uh huh Uh huh."  Shortly thereafter Volkswagen picked it up.  The song is a good segue with OMC's "How Bizarre," see your future '90s one hit wonders list.

Worst placed: Burger King's use of Modern English "I'll MELT With You," c. 1996.

The Swiffer commercial? No, I doubt it. If it is, then they must be really desperate for work.

Nooooooo....Worst placed, at least in my opinion, is The Cure's "Pictures Of You" in...a camera commercial or something? Whoever thought of that missed the entire point of the song.

Absolutely Vile

I think the worst placed is "Any Way You Want It" by Journey in the recent Ford commercials.

I think the best placed is "You Really Got Me" by Van Halen in the Nissan commercial with Barbie, Ken, and GI Joe.  I know it's technically late 70s, but it sounds very 80s.  Very funny!

You wanna talk about misplaced? How about Royal Caribbean Cruise line, using Iggy Pops' Lust For Life, in their commercial. Who thought a song about trying to beat heroin addiction, would be good for a vacation commercial. Just plain strange. Do these people really not know what these songs are about? That's a scary thought.,,,,AW

Absolutely---

OMG, you noticed that, too?   "Pictures of You" in a camera commercial is dfinitely worse placed than my vote.  Not only is it lyrically out of context, but you've got that melancholy melody and Robert Smith's mournful voice in there, which doesn't make much of a sales pitch!

Biggest slap in the face: The Clash's "London Calling" for Jaguar, no comment necessary!

Other misplaced '80s songs, though a little off topic:
Ronald Reagan using Bruce Springsteen 's "Born in the USA" for his campaign.
Rush Limbaugh using The Pretenders' "My City Was Gone" for his theme song.
In both cases the lyrics are actually an indictment of what each man stood for.

I thought it was funny that David Bowie played "Heroes" for the 9/11 benefit concert.  That song's not exactly about heroes, if you know what I mean.

What I REALLY LIKED was AFOS'  "I Ran" for the "Grand Theft Auto" ad!

Yep, you can tell some of us 80's kids grew up to work in tv advertising!

A tv ad for Kmart uses a redo of Jesus Jones (late 80's?) hit "Right here, right now, there is no other place I want to be.."

Jesus Jones, a one hit wonder, thank heavens for small mercies!

There's some toy that's advertised now with a jingle taken from Katrina & The Waves' "Walking On Sunshine."

How many commercial have used Yello's "Oh Yeah," or derivitives thereof?

SafetyDance, did you catch Ivan on VH1 this fall talking about the true meaning of The Safety Dance?  Boy, does he look different.  He's gained about 80 pounds, and that fab hair? It's a buzz cut!

I agree. You want to use something more upbeat for a commercial, and there are plenty of upbeat Cure songs...maybe some that might have been appropriate! "Why Can't I Be You?"

The music for "How Soon Is Now" by The Smiths was used in a Nissan commercial (which I was extremely happy about), but I could never see a Smiths song with any lyrics being used in one, unless it was used out of context like The Cure was. "Girlfriend In A Coma" for a US injury/accident lawyer commercial perhaps?? <shudder> I hope it never happens!!!

I think the Grand Prize for the absolute, most horrible misuse of a great 80's song for a commercial has to be.... (drum roll, please...)

"Just Can't Get Enough" by Depeche Mode for THE GAP!

Remember that monstrosity?? A complete mockery of Depeche Mode and a wonderful song (even if it was cheesy and poppy in comparison to what they did post-Vince Clarke when Martin Gore took over the songwriting).

"Just Can't Get Enough" (or a version of it) has since been used in a car commercial, but even that is an abomination. Not as bad as all those dodgy people singing in that stupid Gap commercial.

Absolutely Vile
