Subject: Did you ever meet any of your idols?
Were you nervous? So excited that you couldn't speak? Or cool as a cucumber?
My line of work has led me to meet a few famous folk over the years and I've usually manged to keep a sane head on those occasions.
I was very nervous when I met Jimmy Somerville a few yrs ago as I was/still am a big fan since the early days of Bronski Beat.
One for the Aussies - I could barely utter a word when meeting Mark Seymour of Hunters & Collectors. Still cringe when I think about it. ;D

I never got a chance to meet Michael Jackson 15 years ago. :(

I met Air Supply twice (actually, it was the whole band the first time, and the second time was just the two singers) around 1980-81. Sappy, I know...but I was young and I adored them at the time.
This isn't quite 80's but in 1991 I met Jesus Jones. I wasn't a huge fan, but I liked them. :)
I haven't met my true idols yet (I don't need to mention them, I don't think ;D) but if/when I do, I have no idea what I'd do or say, or how I would react. Just as long as I don't do anything stupid, I'll be fine. :)
Absolutely Vile

I actually applied to be on a VH1 new reality show called Lost Idols. Its about finding your lost idol from the 80's. Don't know too many details about the show. But if I did meet my idol (from the 80's) I would love to just sit down and talk with him. I'd probably compose some questions. And speaking of composure, I'd probably keep mine (on the surface anyway). :D

Yeah, I got to chat quickly with Clint Eastwood when I bumped into him in downtown Calgary, Alberta. He was filming "Unforgiven" in 1992 I think it was. Seemed like a pretty nice guy.

We met Gregory Peck at the Lincoln Memorial, years ago and I had my young son poke him in the back, as he was standing in front of us. he turned and shook my sons hand. How I love that mans voice.
I met Tony Bennett a few years back. I collect vinyl and have all his 45's. The gal standing in line in front of me asked him if he would give her mouth to mouth resusitation if she fainted. Cool!

I met Jimi Goodwin(The Doves's lead singer) at their aftershow party over here in Zagreb(Croatia) last November.I even exchanged a few words with him. He's not exactly my hero but yes I was nervous indeed.
(The Doves currently are one of the hottest UK indie bands around)
And I'm going to meet Gary Marx,ex guitarist and the founder member of the Sisters Of Mercy(one of my all time favourite bands btw),at the big SOM party also over here in Zagreb on the 29th of this month. And I'm biting my nails from excitement already!Ta!Yix! 8)
Subject: Re: Did you ever meet any of your idols?
Well I met the Go-Go's many times in the 80s (actually a chance encounter led me to get to "hang with them" alot in the 80s....) This was WAY cool since they were my fave band in the 80s! In the mid 90s I met actor Steve Buscemi outside a restaurant in Los Angeles. I also met Duran lead singer Simon LeBon inside a small Chicago coffee bar and talked with him for a good few minutes (he was very nice!)

When I was younger and obsessed with the Jets they came to town for a concert at a local amusement park. I spent the day at the park while waiting for the concert in the evening. I met 2 of the male members of the group while in the park. After the concert I met all of them breifly and had a giant poster signed by nearly everyone. That's my only claim to fame. I was cool the whole time. I was a shy kid and wouldn't have made a big deal of it.
I also saw Beck at LAX and didn't realize I was standing behind him in line at a magazine counter. My own opinion is that there was no reason to be excited.

Ok. When I was a little girl one day after ballet classes we went to this anti drug rally because Tom Wopat, Luke Duke from the Dukes of Hazzards was there. He's like from Wisconsin and I think he still owns a home in Lodi,Wi. Anyways I dont even think I was 5 and me and my sisters who were around 6 and 4 were like all freaking out over him and then the jerk was like "Somebody shut those kids up" cuz he was trying to hear some druggie talk about how she did drugs.so yeah i think we might have all cried a little but then the idiot signed a two-dollar bill for us so I guess it was a happy thing.

Lisa Welchel (Blair, Facts of Life) was scheduled to be in our area last fall. Because I do a retro radio show, I thought it would be neat to get some one-liners from her. I made arrangements with the person in charge of her schedule a few months ahead of time and was able to do some liners with her. She is pretty nice, but way way way shorter than what I expected her to be (very petite!).
Subject: Re: Did you ever meet any of your idols?
I was lucky enough to meet several of them over the years.
In like 1969 or 1970, I remember a nice man who played with me when he found me wandering in his back yard. He even helped me find some old tennis balls that had flown out of his court. I did not know until a week or so later when I saw him on TV that he was DIck Van Dyke (I was like 5 or 6 at the time).
In 1982 I met Jerry Lewis and Madaline Kahn. Jerry was a complete jerk, and I can't say how bad my impression was of him. But Madaline Kahn was a truely kind and lovely lady. I still miss her.
About a year later I met Burt Reynolds when he came to a fast food place I worked at and bought food for his entire crew (200+ people) when the catering truck did not show up for a movie shoot. A nice and funny man, and he paid for the food himself.
In August 1983 I met California Congressman (and future Governor) Pete Wilson. It was during my Indoctrination to the US Marines. He actually swore us in, and spent some time talking to us and telling us how important the Marines was in making him who he became. I was impressed that a US Congressman would spend the time to meet with some kids just joining the military, and he seemed to greatly enjoy it. I was also on-hand years later in my Dress Blues when he was sworn in as Governor. Unfortuniately, security was to tight for me to get close to him.
I met (Laraine Newman) on a movie shoot I did. We talked several times when waiting for the director to get ready. Trust me, it was very distracting to spend several hours standing next to her when she was in a nightgown. :D
In 1998 I was with a girlfriend who was visiting LA when I took her to the Queen Mary boat tour. We had lunch in one of the nice resteraunts in the ship when we kept looking at a heavy set bearded guy at the next table. I looked at my friend and said "That's Dan Hagarty." SHe was like "No way!" A few minutes later I was drying my hands in the restroom when he came in then pointed out that my watch and rings were on the counter. We spent several minutes talking, and after we left he spent 20-30 minutes at our table talking with us and even flirting with my GF. She loved it! She had a real story to tell the people back home afterwards, and we regret that we did not even think of getting his picture.
Side note to the Dan Hagarty story. When I was in the bathroom with him after he pointed out my rings, I asked him "You are Dan Hagarty, right?" He laughed, and said he was glad I did not say what a lot of people did.
"A lot of people ack "You were Dan Hagarty, weren't you?" His response to that is always "Yes, and I still am Dan Hagarty." A very nice and funny man. I did not even realize he had lost his legs until he mentioned it to me in the bathroom.
Those were my Idols from the 1980's and before, which is in keeping with this message area. I have been lucky enough to meet a lot of others since then.

I met Jake 'The Snake' Roberts about a year back but I got really nervous and didn't say too much. He seemed nice but I think was a little too distracted.
Subject: Re: Did you ever meet any of your idols?
I never got to meet any, but my sister and I worked at a truck stop. Of course I was off both nights but one night Sawyer Brown came in. They had fun messing with her head...she asked which one was Sawyer Brown. ;) Another night Faster Pussycat came in...she got their autographs for me. I was quite jealous.

Had a huge crush on Simon from DD when I was 13/14.
When I was 28, I met him briefly.
He acted quite bitchy and looked like an aging British woman up close. Not too surprised though.
I have a pic from the occasion somewhere, might post it if the boyfriend lets me. ::)
I live in NYC and have met quite a few people in the limelight over the years and he was the least friendly, sad to say.
Oh well, still lurve their music.

Heh heh. He looked dishevelled. He wasn't a patch on his old WWF self (1986 - 1992). I said that I liked him since Wrestlemania 2 and he went on about having more hair then than he does now - humph. :-/

When I got the opportunity to hang out with the Cure, I was really nervous, but the second time was cool as I got to meet Robert Smith then, and I was a bit more calmed down then. Simon and Perry are really laid back and cool.
I've gotten to hang out with the Misfits multiple times, and even worked security for one of their shows because I happened to be in the right place and they were shorthanded. Jerry Only is super nice.
And Jello Biafra from the Dead Kennedys was in town a few months back, I got to drive him to and from the airport and all over. We still talk too. He even bought me a leather jacket since I took him shopping and paid for his meals and whatnot.
So far as managed to keep my cool most of the time

Sat back to back in a Chinese restaurant with Mick Jagger. Asked him how he liked Atlanta, and he talked for some time about the civil war Battle of Atlanta and his disdain for General Sherman. Invited him to a party, but he declined, however a really nice guy, Mick.
Also, met Peter Fonda in Dallas who invited me to the shotgun auction he was going to. Invited him to go to Billy Bob's with my group, both of us declined each others' invitations, but he was a good fellow nonetheless.
Met Leslie Nielson on a plane in Denver, also a friendly person.
