Subject: The Cars video Drive
What do you think of this video? I saw it for the first time on a DVD I bought yesterday. I think It's great, I like the camera movements. Most music videos today are a confusing mess of scenes. The 80s were the golden age of videos.

I saw that (I think). Did it involve a girl who was isolated in a room? If so, I thought it was deep for a pop music video. Great song as well!

Great song and great video. I have it on c.d. It's a definite classic.

I also like the video. I agree that's it's a classic.
And most of today's videos are awful and very cliche'.
The girl in the video is actually a model who later became Ric Ocasak's wife.
I also have the DVD which also includes gems like A Ha "Take On Me" 's and Devo's "Whip It".

Where'd ya'll get those DVD's?

It's "Essential '80's Music Videos". It's available at any local video retail or online store. For about 8 dollars. OK for a DVD that only contains 6 videos.
It includes A-Ha "Take On Me", B-52's "Love Shack", The Cars "Drive", Devo "Whip It", INXS "New Sensation", and Georgia Satellites "Keep Your Hands To Yourself".

The girl in the padded room was Sports Illustrated swimsuit model, Paulina Portikova. She met Cars lead singer Ric Ocasek while working on the video. They dated for awhile and then got married. They're still married today. I'm a big Cars fan, but Ric Ocasek? Talking about beauty and the beast! :o

I loved that video and the song. As you know, it was one of the few Cars songs not sung by Ric Ocasek, but by the late Benjamin Orr. Orr had a solo album called "The Lace," featuring the hit "Stay the Night," which I liked a lot.
I agree with AFOS. I miss the "story" videos and the cute videos ("Why do these guys always have an ice cream truck in their videos?" --Beavis). Today it's all butts and bling bling.
The first video I remember seeing on MTV was The Cars' "Since You're Gone," which is one of my favorite Cars songs.

Ditto.
Even hip hop videos were different in the 1980's.
(Ex, "Parents Just Don't Understand" by DJ Jazzy Jeff & The Fresh Prince, "Me, Myself, and I"by De La Soul, "It's Tricky" by Run DMC, "Just A Friend" by Biz Markie, etc.)
And the only video I could think of that resemble every current hip hop video is 2 Live Crew's "Me So Horny". Which was considered very controversial in 1989.
The same with pop videos from female pop singers like Cyndi Lauper, Bananrama, Debbie Gibson, Taylor Dayne, Janet Jackson, etc.
Now it's all over sexed and very cliche'.

You know what they called MTV back in the day? "Oversexed." I mean, you had your heavy metal bikini girls writhing on burning cars, and you had your Freddie Mercury struttin' around in skin tight leather pants. There was plenty of carnality. The first time I heard of Tipper Gore was in 1984 when she griped that MTV videos showed just "a lot of women hanging by their wrists." I think she was just jealous 'coz Al wasn't into it. :D
Then it just got more and more hardcore. I think it coincides with the total mainstreaming of the porno industry. The nastiest ones are on BET.
