Subject: Early 80s industrial/techno
Can anyone tell me some bands from the early 80s that were industrial/techno? I would like to check them out.

We all know about Kraftwerk, Gary Numan, sort of starting it all so... I guess let talk about more 'obscure' yet just as important first:
Throbbing Gristle was early industrial since the 70s and cause a big improvement and impact in this genre. Search for them in http://allmusic.comthey split in 81, but there were several other industrial /ebm bands that came up in the same 'vein', inspired by their work. Heck even Human League in the beginning were very experimental! See related/similar artists box in Throbbing Gristle bio section and click for more bands. Clock DVA, Suicide, Cabaret Voltaire etc some of these bands started already late 70s early 80s but sometimes just got their sound better defined in the late years, see Front242 for instance. I'd define those from industrial to EBM (electronic body music) in the early 80s.
I'd say New Order inspired some of the newer electronic bands, but that's just a personal opinion here. FAd Gadget released their albums from 80 to 84 and until now I think they are still very modern and influence a lot of ebm swedish bands electro-goth etc.
Anyway: I'm not really sure about the short term 'techno' being used already back then. It depends how dow you mean, "hardcore techno", there are so many subgroups!? you mean, more like in the likes of nowadays trance or a Infected Mushrooms percursor? From whata I remember, The hardest fastest electronics beat bpm (?) came in the mid-late 80s with house in detroit underground, but techno itself, i guess just broke in the mainstream in the early 90s then. But maybe someone better informed may help you here.
take care and hope it helps!

throbbing gristle, cabaret voltaire, new order, skinny puppy, all i can think of.
Subject: Re: Early 80s industrial/techno
anyway... if you are going to check early 80s industrial bands I'd recommend these:
Throbbing Gristle
Cabaret Voltaire
Einstürzende Neubauten
those are basically essential, i guess
the throw in some Suicide, Front242, Kmfdm in the mix too and check the others from mid80s (skinny puppy, nitzer ebb, ministry, neon judgement, a split second)
pluss those suggested Throbbing Gristle bands bio, sometimes they are pretty good start directions.

I like techno pop in the early 80s like Devo, about anything. Think Devo was influenced by Gang of Four, but that could be 70s.
There was tons of techno/industrial dance in the late 80s, but I'm not as well versed, some of these other folks will know (see Digitales above).
Almost forgot, Flock of Seaguls, nice tech, easy industrial listening.
Subject: Re: Early 80s industrial/techno
that song cotton eye joe is like 80s country techno, it's crazy so it rocks!

How could anyone have possibly missed out Depeche Mode?? And no...I am NOT being biased!! Certainly their albums Construction Time Again (1983) and Some Great Reward (1984) could be considered "industrial" in its infancy with their sampling of them bashing things about, etc. Wouldn't it? I guess it depends on what you mean by "industrial," though. I always thought those two records had an industrial feel, but then my knowledge of the genre is limited.

Just called the dj who's been burning up the air waves, likes of Primas, Ministry, Godflash, KMFDM, this morning on the college station, WRFL. He defined "industrial" as a mix between metal and techno, there are lots of types of industrial. Also see allmusic.com, check "styles".

Absolutely Vile you are Absolutely Right! Early Depech Mode was a industrial/techno band. Maybe a softer industrial, but definately should be included. But if you are looking for something harder try anything that Alain Jorgenson was involved in. I love early Ministry but can't stand the 90's version of Ministry. Revolting Cocks, Front 242, Kmfdm, Skinny Puppy, My Life with the Thrill Kill Kult, I could go on and on as I loved the late 80's industrial dance music craze. Also Belgium has a whole lot of Industrial Dance bands that were good during the mid-late 80's. Try pulling up Wax Traxx's website and some of the Belgium record label's website. Antler, and Subway are just a few.

Try early Robert Hazard. He was a legend in Philly in the early '80's and his music is some of the earliest techno music. His music is hard to find, but you can find his early stuff on ebay many times. (For anyone who has never heard of him, he wrote Cyndi Lauper's Girls Just Want to Have Fun).

Otherwise you might try some DJs that started spinning
techno & industrial house like Richie Hawtin & Kevin Saunderson (I think, but Richie for sure).
They still spin their tunes today!!

There's another band I thought of that might fit this genre. They're called DAF (Deutches Americans Francais I think).
Thought they were German but maybe not. My brother listened to them a lot in the early eighties. He was a big Kraftwerk fan as well.

Hey all.
This is my first ever post.
Ok, some good bands that
are perhaps not too industrial but have dance
qualities and hard edges if you will. Are...
Clan of Xymox - Self-Titled or any album or EP from 1983
to 1987.
Xmal Deutschland - "Fetisch" (1983)
Nico {+ The Faction} - "Camera Obscura" - (Industrial album here) (1985)
Nina Hagen - anything really.."In Exctasy'' (1985) s/p 8)

Similarily, I don't quite know what fits this genre- Joy Division is the band that springs to my mind. Bit of a precursor to New Order, but their music was a (generally pretty depressing) mix of keyboards & guitars. I liked them 'cos they fit with my teen angst ::)

Yeah, but I don't think Joy Division could be called industrial or techno. New Order, definitely. (Well, they were definitely dancy...) They were more of a reincarnation of Joy Division, having formed from the leftovers after the death of Ian Curtis. Great group, I'll agree...but I don't think Joy Division fits here. New Order does.
