Never had one, but always wondered if the little guy would lip-sync to whatever tape you shoved in his back... whether it was an actual Teddy tape or, say... Metallica's "The Thing That Should Not Be"...

My cousin had one of those. I genuinely thought he really was speaking - state of the art.
Of course I was really stupid at the time.
Subject: Re: teddy ruxpin
My mom had one - she liked teddy bears. I used to put music tapes into it and watch it go. There's nothing funnier than seeing the genteel Teddy Ruxpin rocking out to Fear or the Dead Kennedys!

I never had one, but I do remember a comedian's skit about them and all the other "automated" toys that came out at the time. Something about not being surprised when a whole generation of kids ended up in church towers with sniper rifles after their parents stopped reading to them and instead dumped them in a corner with these toys.

I got one for my Daughter in 1985, and she absolutely loved it.
It was inspired by the Animatronc figures at Disneyland, and if I remember right, some of the same designers worked on their development.
They basically worked by useing one stereo track on a cassette for the words and music, the other trac included computer date telling the servo motors on Teddy (or Grubby, or the other toys) when to activate.
And there was at least one company that made a clone tape that worked in the TR bear. I got several of these for my Daughter, and she liked those better then the original ones. I even found some for her in Spanish (her mom is from Argentina).
Putting a non TR tape in the bear had no effect, other then you would only hear it in Mono.
There have been a few companies that have made TR since then, but each one was worse then the original. THe original had like 5 or 6 servo motors, the newest incarnation had only 1.
