Subject: YAMAHA DX-7
Who's familiar with this synth? Or better yet, who's not familiar with it?
I was wondering, who all used this keyboard? Im buying one (finally) next weekend (9-6) and I was wondering where I could get an idea of what all they can do. I am after any noises or sounds. I figure a cool place to look would be a massive 80s music collection.

Here is a quote from Alan Wilder himself (formerly of Depeche Mode) courtesy of the Q&A archives on www.recoil.co.uk, his website:
"The problem with the DX 7 is that it is very complicated to adjust the factory settings."
I think he mentions this keyboard a few times in the Q&A. You'll have to do a search on his website. I don't know about the keyboard myself (though I'd like to!), and I don't know Alan personally, but the name of the keyboard sounded familiar, as I was sure I'd seen it mentioned on Alan's website. It's not terribly uplifting, but I hope it helps! :)
Just buy it and judge for yourself, is all I can say... I personally would be honoured to own a piece of equipment that one of my musical idols (not counting singers) has used or is familiar with!! :D
Absolutely Vile (who still has a Yamaha PSS 570 keyboard from 1986 ;D)

Oh yes...and you can also find lots of information about equipment, keyboards, samplers, etc., that he's used or is using presently from his website. Very interesting if you want to get into playing electronic music. Have a look...

The DX-7 is the worlds hardest keyboard to program. But it can get some cool sounds. If you want a DX-7 without the difficulty, get an FM7 (software) and a keyboard controller.
2nd hardest belongs to a pre-programmed Phase Distortion synth by Casio: CZ-230S....
Are there any artists that used DX-7s? I know there are a bunch....Are there any like State of the Art, and Bad and Co. who used DX-7s as bass, rhythm, drums, AND effects?
What songs have an obvious DX-7 sound

You might find this site extremely helpful:
http://www.vintagesynth.org/yamaha/dx7.shtml
It lists several bands who have used the DX-7, including...Depeche Mode (!!) and many other very notable people. :D
