Subject: Alte 80s early 90s pop-techno/synth pop/pop

Written By: Frayo on 08/12/03 at 08:38 p.m.

I was wondering about this genre. Who/What bands are really good for this sound. The period where the 80s got more and more crazy up until about 1992-93 when the scene changed to grundge. The Neon era as some people call it at the new wave nostalgia forums.
The insaine pop music, the kind that people are afraid to listen to. The cheesy and good. I want to hear it all. Its a major curiosity of mine...
The heavy syntheszier funk is included in this category

Fake Drum machine sounds, lots of keybaords and loops, that kind of stuff...

Waugh.  That's a long genre-name.  What does 'Alte' mean by the way?  Short for alternative?

Hmm. I should narrow it down to what kind of sound I am looking for..

Sounds like these songs:
Prince - You got the Look
Pebbles - Mercedes Boy (Pebbles in general)
Paula Adul - Straight Up (Paula Abdul in general)
Artists like:
Living in a box, Rick Astley, DeBarge, Sly Fox..

Non-Popular artists like the Exotic Birds that fit into this category are welcome.

I am not sure what to call this stuff. Its hard for me to describe for I was only like 3 at the time.
Sorry for the cconfusion

Depeche Mode's lighter stuff fits into this category. Its mostly pop muzak.

I love all of Depeche Modes stuff. IMHO their new stuff isnt as cool as their old stuff.

"Lighter stuff?" You mean from before Black Celebration? OK... I wouldn't call them "muzak" though! They were poppy then, though, yeah.

Depeche Mode are still good, but I don't think they're as good as they were before Songs Of Faith And Devotion, and certainly not since Alan Wilder left.

Oh, then you're probably looking for stuff by Morris Day & The Time or any other Prince protégé...and whomever did that song "Oh Sheila." :P

You don't want to know what I call it! I hate this stuff (given the examples you gave)!! I'm surprised you'd lump Depeche Mode into that category, since I'd put them waaaaaaay above Prince or Paula Abdul...:D

That link is very useful. Thank you very much.

BTW:
Who did Oh Sheila...??

-----------------------------------------------------------
In 1984 Colour Radio (on their self-titled LP) did a very cool and underrated New Wave song called Sheila. It was very much cool. <- this is off topic, but ah well.

You did though! Take a look back! You originally posted about the kind of stuff you were looking for, I then asked if Depeche Mode would fit in that category, you then clarified by giving examples of what you meant (which was mostly Prince-like stuff) and then you said that Depeche Mode would fit into that category! That's how I took it anyway. :) And you did call them "pop muzak." Muzak is played in elevators. The thought of Depeche Mode being played by a symphony over a speaker in an elevator makes my stomach turn. :) I'd re-quote, but I can't be bothered right now. I know what I'm saying! (Or I should hope so anyway!) :D

I don't remember. Some Prince-sounding group. Probably another protégé. ;D

Morris Day & The Time
Sheila E.
Appollonia
Vanity

...All I can come up with now. Prince, of course, wrote songs for other people as well as himself...and they all sounded like Prince songs!! (Just like Barry Gibb and Stock/Aitken/Waterman.) :D

(My name is) Absolutely Vile (and I am funky!)

I am so misquoted...I feel like a politician, only not so shalllow.
I didnt mean to. By putting them into grouped sentences and not elaborating enough..CURSES!

The guys who did Oh Sheila are called Ready For the World.

I just listened to their stuff. Half of the songs are almost-clones of Oh Sheila, the rest are cheesy love songs.
