Subject: the flying pickets/the housemartins

Written By: jaytee on 08/11/03 at 10:33 p.m.

I remember going to see the Flying Pickets in the mid to late 80s.  They did a great version of Pyscho Killer (Talking Heads) and Only You (Yazoo).  Does anyone else out there remember them?

The only Housemartins song I ever recall hearing was "Caravan of Love" which I really like.   Are there any Housemartin fans out there and what is their other stuff like?  I'd be interested to hear about them.

Cheers :)

I rate the Flying Pickets version of "Only You" better than the Yazoo version. Didn't they also release another single "The More You Live, The More You Love"?

The Housemartins also did "Happy Hour" but I hate them as a group. Didn't members of the group form the Beautiful South? (who I hate even more)

I know one of them did for sure. Another Housemartin became Fatboy Slim...

I love the Flying Pickets version of 'When you're young and in love' - that is beautiful. 'Only you' by them was also better than Yazoo's version.

I also love The Housemartins. They did 'Happy Hour' (liked the video),'Caravan of love,'Think','Five get over excited' and 'Me and the Farmer'. For easy-going pop, it was wonderful.

The lead singer Paul Heaton went to Beautiful South and Norman Cook is now Fatboy Slim after a venture with 'Beats International'.

The Flying Pickets were popular for about a couple of years (1982-84) before gradually calling it a day - as befits their political leanings, they could always be seen performing at left-wing rallies/events...

I think they went mainstream just before "Only You" hit (Xmas '83) - I do remember seeing them quite a bit on Saturday night TV (can't remember which programme)...they also used to do a very strange version of "You've Lost That Lovin' Feelin'"...

Of course, they were bound to have a very limited shelf-life - there's only so much a capella people can stomach...their version of the Eurythmics "Who's That Girl" is to be avoided at all costs...!

The Housemartins really burst out of nowhere with "Happy Hour", which was markedly different from other stuff around at the time...do remember that video with the silly dance...I didn't really care much for "Caravan Of Love" (their excursion into a capella), I prefer the Isley Jasper Isley version - but did like "Think For A Minute", which is altogether not a million miles away from the sound that the Beautiful South came to adopt...

I thought that  the Flying Pickets version of 'Only You' was, good in a different way, but it can't compare to Yazoo's.

I love 'Happy Hour' by the Housemartins. 'Caravan of Love' isn't very good in my opinion - I think it got to Christmas no1 over here though!

Yes, one of the Housemartins was in the Beautiful South by the latter part of the decade, Paul.... ?? and Norman Cook went on to be even more successul with Beats International (Who did 'Dub Be Good To Me' - a great cover of the SOS band classic) and eventually becoming Fatboy Slim.

I quite liked a few Beatuiful South tunes - 'A Little Time' and 'Song For Whoever' especially.

Nope! I think it's a great song! :) However, I think I'm one of a precious few people who prefer Yazoo's version of "Only You" to The Flying Pickets. I do like the Pickets' one, but the original was better. :D

I've always been a big Housemartins/Beautiful South fan, but the only reason that The Flying Pickets and the Housemartins are talked about in the same breath is due to the fact that they have tried their hands at A Capella music.  The Housemartins should have just stayed away from the A Capella scene (I'm a huge pop A Capella fan, therefore I may be harsh in my criticism).  "Only You" was a fine cover, but never made it as big over here as Yaz' version.  Heck, if I wanted to listen to some "listenable" 80's pop band doing A Capella, I'd pull out some Huey Lewis and the News.  They certainly didn't embarass themselves with "Naturally".

That's just my opinion, and I could be wrong (my apologies to Dennis Miller)

My favorite Housemartin song is "Think for a Minute" circa 1986 (darn, now I'm thinking back to when I heard it in a lonely time-but it's still beautiful).  I bought the album for that song only.  Think the main dude of the Housemartins formed a group called, The Beautiful South, woops, see above thread(s).

Yes it did!! I thought that was hilarious that they'd have a blancmange be a big popstar. Then I found out there was a group called Blancmange, and I thought maybe The Beautiful South had something to do with them. They didn't. I love that video though! :D

The video was set in a pub and it involved claymation figures. One of them made a tower out of matchsticks I think and a couple getting married was featured as well.

The Housemartins also danced funny in it as well.   :)
