Nicky Garrat....the U.K. Subs were never the same again without him :(
Subject: Re: Favorite Guitarist of 80's
I knew Joe Satriani would be mentioned and I guess I don't get it I never found his work to be that spectacular.
A year or two ago Guitar magazine had its top 100 guitar solos of all times. Of course Eddie Van Halen was on the list and in my opinion he is probably the best ever after Hendrix but I was dismayed to see that Vernon Reid of Living Colour did not make the list.
If it was up to me only and I had to pick the best guitar solo and the best guitarist of the 80's it would be Reid.
Just listen and I mean really listen to what he does with a guitar in "Cult of personality" it is beyond words.
So 80's or not here are my top 3 all time:
Jimi Hendrix
Eddie Van Halen
Vernon Reid
Top 3 drummers all Time:
Neil Peart
Stewart Copeland
Buddy Rich
Best Live performance all time:
Do you feel like we do - Frampton comes alive
I want you to want me - Cheap Trick Live at Budokan
Peace,
Loren

Yeah, my brother always gets me with that one; he said some band only had one 'guitarist' and i said eh? Like the White Stripes or something? 'Course he wasn't counting the Bassist. But it's a bass guitar isn't it? :P *shrugs*
Subject: Re: Favorite Guitarist of 80's
OK #1 Neil Peart plays Drums with Rush.
#2 Yes John Bonham was an excellent drummer and has the respect of fans and musicians alike but I think alot of what people see as talent should be attributed more to the mystique of LZ being perhaps the best rock band ever and maybe even attributed to the mystique of his death. A great drummer? certainly! better than my top 3?... maybe..I would put him somewhere like 6 maybe 7.
#3 Randy Rhoads was flat out awesome some of his solos with Ozzy makes the hair on my neck stand up but he died too early and I don't think his true potential was ever seen. a loss for guitar affecianados (sp?) for sure. He would certainly fall in my top 15 - 20 easy.
#4 Another would be and no one has mentioned him is Stevie Ray Vaughn. Although I'm from Texas I never really liked his Blues style of rock and roll however, I could appreciate what he could do with a guitar. In my top 10
Peace,
Loren

yea, but this is Favorite Guitarist of 80's , if it wasn`t i would have said Hendrix because Jimi is my favorite (with Mitch Mitchell & Noel Redding) band of all time, next to BLACK SABBATH
anyone ever listen to Steve Vai.
Subject: Re: Favorite Guitarist of 80's
Fave guitarists of the 80s? Where do I start?
1. Richie Sambora (Bon Jovi..yes you are right Phil!!)
2. Brad Gillis (Night Ranger)
3. Neal Schon (Journey)
4. Eddie Van Halen
5. Randy Rhodes (Ozzy Osbourne)
Others worth mentioning of course would be Joe Satriani, Steve Vai, Yngwie Malmsteen, and Stevie Ray Vaughan...

Yeah, but when one says "guitarist," one doesn't automatically think of the bass guitar, they think of the guitar like the one everybody else mentioned plays. Therefore, the guitarist in Duran Duran is Andy Taylor. John Taylor would be more commonly known as the bassist or bass player. ;D

Hell yea, Definitley one of the best.
Personally Edward VanHalen is the best. There are so many great ones though. No one mentioned the RATT boys. Robbin Crosby (r.i.p.) and Warren Demartini. I just saw R.E.O. Speedwagon, Styx, and Journey. And I must say Niel Schon is a friggin unbeleivable guitarist. To measure a great guitarist you must see them live. Anything can be fixed on an album.
