Subject: What to wear

Written By: tcbchuck on 08/05/03 at 07:07 a.m.

I graduated HS in 1980 in Georgia and I can't remember what our clothes looked like at that time (other than the disco look and i'm sure i didn't wear my dancing togs to school every day).  I'm attending a party that wants us to wear our Senior Look.

Anyone got any suggestions?  Was Bo Derek's braids a thing of that time?

PS, i am female.  Thanks for any help you may be able to provide.

Didn't you keep your yearbooks? Try looking in there to see what you and your classmates were wearing at that time. Bo Derek's "cornrow" (braided) look was in then, since her film 10 had her sporting that look when it came out in 1980. But is it really worth the time and effort? Depending on how thick your hair is, that look can take hours to achieve!! (I know because my mum did it to my hair when I was, like, eight and it took a long time and my hair is thin!)

Let's see what I can remember, or know looking at bands and people from around then, because I was only 7-8 years old in 1980!! The feathered look was in, short or long. That was a throwback from the 70's. Lots and lots of makeup and loose clothing (I think). Puffy sleeves and that. I think very plunging necklines were also in, sadly enough. I don't know...I think 80's fashion got better as the decade went on. Fashion in 1980 seemed to be leftovers from the 70's, and you know how awful and horrid that was!!!! :D

The Bo Derek look was never "in."  Oh, a few girls did the braided hair thing, but it was never a fad.  I was a teenager in 1980, not 7 or 8. :)  Remember that this was post 70s, so the feathered hair was still pretty much in style.  Designer jeans with the white stitching (Calvin Klein, Jordache, Gloria Vanderbilt, etc.) was popular.  Izod shirts were just becoming popular (with the collar up - but that happened a couple years later).  Boat shoes were in, as well as Nike leather Cortez shoes (now found once again at your local Foot Locker).  Also, Members Only jackets were starting to become popular (more for the guys though).  The shirts with the puffy sleeves were in fact in style.  And the clothes were tight back then too.  They didn't loosen up for a few years.

Agree, the Derek style was never really in (I was only 11!); I don't think I recall any1 wearing that in real life.  Definitely the Farrah Fawcet hair was the thing.

But I slightly disagree on the designer-jeans and Izod shirts - they may have started to creep in (maybe in your area ahead of ours), but I don't think they really were big everywhere until '81-2.  I recall the designer-jeans wars in my MS when I was 12 or 13 (I was stuck almost always w/the cheap 1s if I got any - like Guess ;) ), as well as the so-called "preppy" look which included the Izod shirts.  Anyway, it's probably not far off so who's going to know?

Yes, there were tite clothes, but loose, frilly things were still in, esp. for dresses and such and certain feminine blouses.  Disco era had not died just cuz the 3rd digit changed!
