Subject: Awful songs by good 80's bands

Written By: Absolutely_Vile on 07/25/03 at 10:11 a.m.

Admit it. You know that even your favourite bands have done some real stinkers over the course of their careers. So what are some of the worst songs done by some of your favourite bands? And do you secretly like them? (After all, they are by your favourite bands!) Or do you admit they're bad, and no band is perfect? Tell me what you think! Here are my thoughts to start off:

Depeche Mode - Boys Say Go!, What's Your Name, Work Hard

I can't stand these songs. Depeche Mode are wonderful, but we all know Vince Clarke was a terrible lyricist when he was with the Mode...and even a genius like Martin L. Gore can have an off day!!

The Smiths - Death At One's Elbow, Golden Lights, Death Of A Disco Dancer

Unfortunately, not even The Smiths can do no wrong. "Death Of A Disco Dancer" is probably the most tolerable of the three, and my husband likes it, but still all three are really bad songs, in my opinion.

Prince "Bat Dance"
The Police "Mother"
The Clash "Should I Stay Or Should I Go" (The Rugrats ruined it.  >:()
Pet Shop Boys "Where The Streets Have No Name"
Styx "Mr. Roboto"
Michael Jackson & Paul McCartney "Say, Say, Say"

Well, I don't like either song, really ("Say Say Say" or "The Girl Is Mine") and I'm NOT a big fan of Michael Jackson or Paul McCartney. So I wouldn't have liked the song no matter what they were going on about. :P

I think 'The Girl is mine' by Paul McCartney/Michael Jackson was awful as well. Who did the original 'Go West' song covered by Pet Shop Boys?

Whitesnake Give me all your love
Prince Batdance, Anotherholenyohead
Shakin' Stevens Oh Julie, Marie Marie
Pet shop boys What have I done to deserve this
Phil Collins A groovy kind of love
Madness The return of the Los Palmos seven

The songs mentioned don't do anything for me at all.  :-/

This is probably my favourite Pet Shop Boys song. I just love singing along to Dusty Springfield's part. :) I like "Shopping" too, but I haven't heard it in a while. :)

Howard, it is sad but true. Michael Jackson wouldn't even let Paul buy it back.

I heard that Paul recommended that Michael should invest in certain artists catalogues. But he never mentioned the Beatles. Michael took up his advice, but made a big mistake by buying HIS band!

No one's even mentioned, "Safety Dance," stupid song, video, and group, woops, sorry folks, wrong subject for this one. Lessee, "have to agree, "That Girl is Mine," think Paul and Michael blew it.

One of the crappiest songs ever done during the 80's, that was all over the radio, was "Get Outta My Dreams, Get Into My Car" by Billy Ocean in 1988!!!!

Want another?  "I Think We're Alone Now" by Tiffany!

Earlier 80's?  Hall & Oates with "Maneater"!!

The Bangles would have been a much better group without "Walk Like an Egyptian" dragging them down.  And for the record, they would all agree with me on that one.

Due to many bad business decisions, it wasn't, technically, "Paul's" Beatles catalogue.

And for a special kind of torture, Mazda used it in their advertising a few years ago.  Now imagine, being stuck in a booth at the Auto Show in Toronto for a 10 hour shift, just across from the Mazda booth, and hearing that song almost non-stop for those 10 hours!!!!  If I hadn't already hated the song, I definitely did at the end of my shift  >:( >:(

To this day, hearing that song makes me want to do violent damage to anything or anyone within reach!!

Yes, from 1986.  Other than a bad song, the video was fun to watch. (Animated by John K., the creator of "Ren & Stimpy")

Another bad song from the Stones was 1981's "Emotional Rescue".

I kinda liked that song, although the album it was on (Dirty Work) was mediocre compared to their prior ones. Harlem Shuffle was actually a cover of a Bob and Earl song (which is good too).

The songs that annoyed me the most from that time period was anything by the Fabulous Thunderbirds or Phil Collins.... >:(

Being a Dr. Demento fan back then, I remember this version that was played on the show about the time that Michelle bought the copyrights of the Beatles.

It basically had Michelle and Sir Paul argueing "THe Song Is Mine".  Hilarious, I wish I still had a tape of that.

Vile,
Michael Jackson didn't buy the entire Beatles catalog.  He bought about half of them at an auction.  Paul McCartney and Yoko Ono own the other half.  Paul has been trying to buy Yoko's half for years.  Just thought you might want to know ;D
