Subject: Canadian Electronic Music??
I don't know how many Canadians there are on this message board, but here's a chance to show yourselves!! :D I have a major dilemma...
I will be starting a radio show at a local university's radio station most probably within the next couple of months, and I plan on basing my show primarily on electronic/synth-based music, mostly from the 70's and 80's. My problem is, since it's broadcast to the general public throughout the city, it is subject to CRTC regulations which state that one must play 30% Canadian content. So...did anyone do synth-based music in this country?? I can only come up with one band: Images In Vogue, whom I love. I can't, for the life of me, think of any others. Can YOU?? Your input is greatly appreciated!!

Hi Vile!
I know of two Canadian groups, both have had limited success in Britain. One is Trans-X who did the classic 'Living on video' (1985) and Kon Kan who did the brilliant 'I beg your pardon' (1989).
Hope I've helped. :)
Subject: Re: Canadian Electronic Music??
'Rush' were Canadian and they fit into the 70s/80s bracket. I don't know if they were involved in Electronic music though.
Does it help that Ultravox were partly Canadian?
Good luck with the new radio station! :D

You have. :) I completely forgot about Kon Kan! They were really cool, and I do have a CD of theirs. Trans-X I believe I've heard of but I don't recall ever hearing them or knowing they were Canadian. :) You learn something new everyday...eh?? ;D

Rush did one predominantly synthy album in around 1983 called Subdivisions. I like the title track, but I'll never play them. I find Geddy Lee's voice very annoying, and Rush is too "classic rock" for my liking.

They were? Really? I didn't know that!! So were Cutting Crew, actually. (One of the guys was from New Brunswick, I think. He recently passed on.) I don't think that would count, though. The group has to be formed and based in Canada, and both Ultravox and Cutting Crew were based in the UK. It won't stop me from playing them though! They just won't count as "Canadian content," unfortunately.
Quoting:Good luck with the new radio station!End Quote
Thanks. :) Actually, the station itself has been around for decades, but only within the last few years has it been accessible on the radio dial. I, myself, used to DJ for it when I was a student there 10 years ago. :) It was fun and I missed it! Now, you no longer have to be a student to DJ and the station is no longer closed-circuit, so the whole city can hear me!!! It's a bit nerve-racking, but I'm excited about it. If only I were getting paid!!! ;D

Hey Vile, what station is it, and on what frequency?
Until I moved last fall, I used to listen to a campus radio station late at night (midnight - 4 am! :P ) that played a lot of electronic music both old and new and the occasional retro-80's tune. The DJ I used to listen to went by the handle "Frantic". Depending on her mood, she played some pretty interesting music with a Canadian slant.
You could try contacting CJSW, they may be able to help. They're at: http://www.cjsw.com/ Hope this helps. Maybe i'll hear you on the air this fall when I go back and do my last year of school. Good luck!

Hehehehe...maybe I should have done a better plug!! ;D So here we go...
<ahem>
I will be DJ'ing at The University Of Winnipeg's radio station, CKUW, 95.9 FM (Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada), hopefully by September. I go for "workshops" starting August 5th. YAY! I'm excited. I haven't done this in ten years!!! :)
I'll check out that website though. I really need ideas. Stupid CRTC.... >:( Thanks!

I've since done research on this, and found out that it was John Foxx who was from Victoria, British Columbia who was the Canadian member of Ultravox. Also, he has appeared solo on Top Of The Pops, and his music was cool! Very synth-based as well! I'll need to look more into him...:D

Strange Advance ("Worlds Away", "We Run") are/were based in Vancouver and their music is fairly electronic.
(BTW, "Subdivisions" is off of the album called Signals.)

Right... I thought of them, but never really considered them because I only really know one song ("We Run"). But yeah, I guess they'd fit in as well. :)

What about the Canadian group 'Martha and the Muffins'? They had a hit in the very early eighties called 'Echo beach'.

D'oh!!! Of course...:D "Echo Beach" is a great song! I was shocked when I found out that my husband (who's from the UK) knew that song, because I never thought Martha and The Muffins made it that far. Toyah even covered the song!! (eeewww)
Anyway, a lot of the bands mentioned so far I never really considered electronic. I was more or less thinking along the lines of Depeche Mode, Kraftwerk, etc. I don't think there were really many of those here, except maybe Kon Kan and Images In Vogue. But there are the groups that were at least predominantly synth, like Strange Advance, and Martha and the Muffins. I never considered them at first, but they're great examples and I'll use them!! ;D

They could be. To tell you the truth i'm not very good at classifying music into categories. Especially since I really don't know very much about electronic/synth-based music. I guess I would say they sound like NIN, but I don't know what type of music that would be considered.
Either way, let me know what kind of music you would classify them as after you're done refreshing your memory. :)

OK, I haven't listened to Skinny Puppy again yet, but to my recollection, I did think they were a lot like Nine Inch Nails. Without classifying anyone, that's not exactly what I'm going for here. If you've seen some of the other examples mentioned (Images In Vogue (my favourite), Kon Kan, Martha, etc.) that's the sort of music I intend to try and play, Canadian content-wise, to please the CRTC. The rest, of course, will be better stuff from elsewhere, like Depeche Mode. ;D I still might consider Skinny Puppy but I'll have to hear them again to see if they might fit in. :)

Try and get a copy of "Worlds Away." I think it's better then "We Run" and it's one of my most favourite 80's tunes.

There is a Canadian group called "Manufacture" who had a few good songs. They used Sarah McLachlan as their lead singer on one "As the end draws near". Sarah also had some good early solo stuff. Check out her song "Vox".

I'm all too familiar with Sarah McLachlan and her early stuff. "Vox" is a pretty good song, but not one that I could hear very often. Her voice gets a bit irritating after a while. :) I've never heard of Manufacture but I'll see what I can find of theirs to listen to.

Frick I forgot about that. Hmmm. . . I dont know any other Canadian Electronic Bands besides the ones that were mentioned. I got a question though. How do you get signed up with a local University station to get your own airspace and program? Me and My brother are trying to get a Arena Rock and call in show going in Calgary. But we have no leads on where to start?

Well, first of all, are you in university? If so, does it have a radio station? Is it broadcast to the masses or is it closed-circuit? If not, first, find one that does, and that broadcasts to the masses. Second, see if you can volunteer as a DJ. (Some universities might require you to be a student there.) Then, once you've found what you're looking for, sign up! Follow their rules (and the federal government's) and you'll be fine. :D
This is what I did, sort of. From 1992-94, I was a student at the University of Winnipeg, and I worked at their radio station. Then I dropped out of school. (I was flunking.) A few months ago, I bumped into the old station manager who was with CKUW when I was there, and she told me that I could volunteer and I didn't have to be a student. I jumped at the chance! I really wanted to get back into it again! So I went down and met the volunteer guy and he told me about the workshops and I signed up. Yay for me! ;D
Good luck with getting a radio show! (Do university types in Calgary actually listen to "arena rock??") :D

D'oh!!!!! You're right...it is Warren Cann who is from Victoria, BC, Canada. :) I had originally looked this up at www.ultravox.org.uk/evinfo.html, Ultravox' official website, but, having not looked at it for a while, John Foxx stuck in my head for some reason, and I thought it was him. But I went back to it just now, and I was wrong!! Thanks for clearing this up. :)

what i remembered of skinny puppy is that they were formed by two members of images in vogue: kevin cey and kevin ogilvie(?). skinny puppy was one of the pioneers of industrial and probably not the type of music that your listeners want to hear (not me, i'm a big fan of skinny puppy)
nobody mentioned the spoons, their big song "nova heart". i still remember the video.

Depeche Mode (not Canadian, I know) predates Skinny Puppy and in the 80's, excluding their first two albums, were industrial in its most primitive form. (Listen to the sound effects.) :) Industrial music has, of course, evolved since then into bands like Skinny Puppy, Rage Against The Machine, etc, but the Mode were experimenting with the concept in 1983!! :D
And, as I've mentioned before in this thread, I'll have to give Skinny Puppy a listen. It's been a while...:)
