Subject: Top 80 of the '80's
Written By: APS on 07/12/03 at 07:51 p.m.
This topic was never mentioned on this board.
Though, I like to bring this list up. Compiled by VH1 in 2001.
And the fact the list was ranked poorly, and there's a couple videos that I think shouldn't be on the list.
...Especially that half an INXS video was listed. :-/

You know, I understand where you come from. But after watching some of the MTV nordic 'CLassics', any playlist look good to me! Can you imagine they put J-lo as a classic??? yeah right, probably a cl_ass_ic because it's played ad nauseum om mtv. ::)
I'm looking forward for your comments about the vh1 list.
take care!

Videos that shouldn't be on the list:
76. Thompson Twins "Hold Me Now"
Good song, mediocre video.
67. Quiet Riot "Cum On Feel The Noize"
OK song, but the video's not that great.
66. Tone Loc "Wild Thing"
Again: Good song, mediocre video.
62. Billy Joel "Pressure"
Not one of my fave Billy Joel songs/videos.
Prefer "Uptown Girl" or "We Didn't Start The Fire" instead.
61. Pat Benatar "Love Is A Battlefield"
Good song, overly cheesy video.
55. Donna Summer "She Works Hard For The Money
Why? The song & video both reek sweaty socks!
And by 1983, Donna Summer's a has been.
39. Don Henly "The Boys Of Summer"
Good song, but I just find the video boring. Zzzzzzzzz
I prefer "All She Wants To Is Dance".
27. Wang Chung "Everybody Have Fun Tonight"
Good song, but the video makes me dizzy!
Prefer the video for "Dance Hall Days" instead.
The rest were poorly ranked.
Examples: "You Might Think" (The Cars), "One" (Metallica), and "Legs" (ZZ Top) are ranked at the bottom of the list.
And "Thriller" is placed at #8!!!
A bit strange since MTV & VH1 placed "Thriller" as #1 on their "100 Greatest" video lists.
MTV's 100 greatest videos of all time list (1999) is on the 2000's board.
Not to mentioned that they never mentioned "Mediate", which is part of the classic INXS video on the special.
"Top '80 of the '80's"? Why not "Top 100 of the '80's"?
The same for "Top '90's of the '90's". (Which I vaguely remember)
Videos that should be included:
Talking Heads "Burning Down The House", Madness "Our House"
David Lee Roth "Just A Gigolo/I Ain't Got Nobody"
Living Color "Cult Of Personality", Madonna "Material Girl"
Genesis "Land Of Confusion", U2 "With Or Without You"
Tom Petty "Free Fallin", Billy Idol "Dancing With Myself"
Prince "Little Red Corvette", Michael Jackson "Bad"
Duran Duran "Rio", Motley Crue "Home Sweet Home"
Janet Jackson "What Have You Done For Me Lately"
Aerosmith "Dude (Looks Like A Lady)"
George Michael "I Want Your Sex", Bananrama "Venus"
Neil Young "This Note's For You", Billy Joel "Uptown Girl"
INXS "Devil Inside", Madonna "Open Your Heart"
Michael Jackson "Smooth Criminal", Cyndi Lauper "Time After Time"
Duran Duran "Girls On Film", David Lee Roth "California Girls"
The B-52's "Love Shack", REM "The One I Love"
The Cars "Magic", Rob Base & DJ EZ Rock "It Takes Two"
Duran Duran "The Reflex", The Cure "The Caterpillar"
Huey Lewis & The News "If This Is It", Heart "Alone"
David Bowie "China Girl", Banarama "Cruel Summer"...
(To name a few. ::))
Though I liked the fact that "Here I Go Again" (Whitesnake) & "She Blinded Me With Science" (Thomas Dolby) are ranked in the top 20. :D

I have actually seen this on MuchMoreMusic, and I thought it was severely lacking in British artists who clearly dominated the decade!! But of course this is from the American VH1 so I guess they must only acknowledge the American music scene in the 80's no matter how good or bad it was. But still...gone were some very important bands who defined the 80's and were NOT American. Where was Depeche Mode, for instance? And couldn't they have picked a better Duran Duran video than "Hungry Like The Wolf?" My pick would have been "Planet Earth," or if they must choose one of the more exotic ones, then "Save A Prayer." Anyway, I was disappointed. So many great British artists were snubbed, and the ones that were there could have been represented with better videos, especially those who had more than one hit in America.
....And why not include Oingo Boingo?? They were American, and they were pretty cool, weren't they? :)
Absolutely Vile

As for as Tone Loc in at #66 for Wild Thing, the people who ranked these videos, they probably took in consideration that it took him only $400 to make the video and the song became a huge it. Made millions and is probably why he is on the list.

Quoting:
55. Donna Summer "She Works Hard For The Money"
End Quote
VH1 actually listed "U Can't Touch This" (MC Hammer) from 1990 as #55.

Then again, I remember that a Donna Summer video was part of the list. :P
Well, it's from the same channel that listed Orprah Winfrey as the #1 pop culture icon.
I can't wait for their "Top 50 Film Soundracks"... ::)
