Subject: Coming Of Age 20 Years Too Late!
I was born 14th July '85, it's lucky enough I was conceived (Mum: "Well you weren't planned love..") let alone born into the greatest era that ever existed. I was present for the last half of the eighties, yet I spent this time dribbling, crying and pretending I was He-Man. I am becoming an adult in 10 days... well, we in the UK believe 18 is in terms of maturity status adult (WRONG!) anyway, even when the 90's dawned upon us I was in the 80's, I lost my 80's-ness in high school but in my last year of compulsory education (16yrs) I met 3 people in my class that shared my love of the eighties just as much as i did! There were 4 of us 2 guys, 2 girls we became very good friends, each had our own problems, it was as if we were the breakfast club. Hols had the problem of overprotective parents that failed to notice her when she WAS at home through this she got an eating disorder, Dave's not really intelligent and overweight but his family love him dearly, Martha (Emm), posh at times but was bullied rotten in school, and me Daz, the joker, very quirky and perceptive, bullied for my height and individuality, I made it to the top and once i withdrew myself, I became another no-face. We were thrown together as if it was a teen angst film. We took nostalgia trips and genuinely missed the eighties as we missed out on so much. About half a year ago Hols went off the rails, fell for the wrong guy and eventually 4 became 3. Stronger than ever we strive to live the legacy as an 80's follower, the fashion, the hair, the tv, the ideas. Going through a lot it seems like my appreciation for the 80's is never-ending. So Now I become an adult ready to face the world when all i wanna do is go out with my friends to an 80's bar and stay in a loophole! I wish i could have lived this in the 80's tho. As firneds we've all become better, especially Emm, from a shy girl who listened to nothing but classical music is confident and a better person because of the era we adore and have come of age in. For Me, the numbers may be diffrent but the decade's just the same, screw the rest who thought 80's was awful! I'm glad I was a part of the 80's for a short time, and by God the 80's are far from over!

Eh, it wasn't that great. I mean it was just the 80's.
I was born in 1978, so I got to see pretty much the entire decade, from a child's point of view ofcourse. Sure I love the 80's, but sometimes I think folks go really overboard about how great it all was.

I was born in March of 1974 and in that year,DISCO and FUNK were red-hot and you had a lot of the good TV shows that were on.I never got to see the 70's cause I was too small to remember. :(

I'm a fellow '85 baby, and yeah, I do think the 80's would have been fun. But there's also a bad side to it.
People were a helluva lot more prejudiced in the 80's than they are now. Watching some of the Anti-Aids footage makes me sick. Ever heard of Ryan White? In the mid-80's he was not allowed to attend school and called a "faggot" because he had AIDS. This kind of prejudice was a hell of a lot more common in the 80's, because people then were more ignorant, and the people who would protest this stuff now were only in diapers then. Anyone who grew up in the Polictically Correct 90's would experience serious culture shock if they time traveled to the 80's because of just how less tolerant of differences people were then. (Not to say that now is devoid of prejudices...but teenagers nowadays are much more tolerant than they were 20 years ago. The fact that I go to a school where openly gay kids aren't bullied or harrassed would have never happened if this were 1983.)
Plus, even though movies like St. Elmo's Fire make it look like 80's fashion was the end all, everyday people looked HIDEOUS in most of what they were in those days. Look in yearbooks from the 80's...*shudders*
And you'd also miss out on technolgical advances like the Internet, cell phones that don't look like walkie-talkies, Playstation, and the medical advances that can keep people alive now who wouldn't have stood a chance of living 20 years.
You were born in 1985 because you were meant to be. And you'll probaly get to live to see all the amazing stuff humanity will come up with by the 2050's, '60's....who knows, maybe you'll even live to see the Tricentennial in 2076! And it would be a hell of a lot less likely for you to live so far into the 21st century if you were born in 1965, y'know?( No offense to those who were, but it's just a logical deduction to expect that people who were born 20 years before we were will die 20 years before we do, y'know?)

The fact that you were born just before the beginning of the decade may have something to do with how you feel about the decade. You experienced it as a child. Had you experienced it as a teen or adult, it would have had more significance, IMO.
I may seem to go overboard about how great it all was in the 1980's, in your opinion, but that's because the 1980's were a great decade for me. I had a total blast then. Then again, I was old enough to fully enjoy it. ;)

There's a bad side to every decade, but It's just part of human nature to focus and remember the good, the positive.
Technologically, the 1980's were a breakthrough decade historically.
Yes, as time goes on there are more and more toys for us to play with and that's all good. The developments are continually expected at this juncture and are no longer impressive in comparison, IMO.
As far as entertainment, music, style and fashion -
The 1980's ruled! It was all original, vibrant and Fun! 8)
I say be proud of your fave decade. :)

Gotta agree, Hairspray, and I was a child in the 80s. The problem at the moment is that everything seems rehashed.
The 80s seemed to be a time for experimentation and everything seemed to be a breakthrough (from the video to the Walkman).
Now, you know things can only get better by adding a hard-drive, extra memory or by getting smaller - have we finally achieved our all?

Let me tell you brother.. You are far from alone.. I was the same way in highschool with a group of friends... I'll be 19 soon.. I can't wait till I can go to 80's clubs when I am old enough to drink.. here in USA its 21 unfortunatly... but oh well some things are worth waiting for... I still wear my head band when I'm at work.. and even the modern pop-type girls think its sexy.. I'm not afraid to be myself.. and I will always be.. LONG LIVE THE 80'S
