Subject: ATMs

Hello all -

I was reading an article in the newpaper this week that said that the patent for ATM technology was celebrating its 30th anniversary this week.  I didn't realize that they had been around that long.  I know that I led a somewhat secluded early life in my small Midwestern farming comunity, but the fact remains that I had never seen an ATM until I went away to college near Chicago in 1984.  I actually had to be shown how to insert the plastic card and input my PIN at my new bank because I had never seen one before and had never had a debit/credit card.  I really thought it was sci-fi hi-tech!  We had always relied on good old-fashioned paper checks for all my life up until then.

On a related topic, my hometown of 1,700 never got an ATM until 1989!  It was big news in that small town :) Unfortunately, the ATM was placed INSIDE of the grocery store that closed at 6:00pm every night, which kind of defeated the purpose.  The bank that placed it there removed it about a year later, due to lack of volume of transactions. DUH!  It took until 1995, then the town had 2 ATMs installed within the same week, WOW! (outdoors this time).  Looks like they are slowly catching up to modern times, LOL.

Anyway, this was just my experience.  I didn't realize that ATMs had been around that long.  Please feel free to post your own stories.

Hmmm. Well I don't recall ATMs themselves being around as long as that, although certainly the technology that allowed them to be invented may be that old. The idea may have been patented in 1973, but I'm sure the machines themselves didn't come along until at least the early 80s. But I could be wrong. Anyone know when the first ATM went into service?

Apparently the first machine was installed in 1969 in NY

Well I'll be blowed! If that's true, then the technology is 34 years old at least, and probably older.

I remember seeing my first ABM in 1982.  Y'know, back in the daze when a savings account got 12% interest!  :P  Funny thing, I use them to withdrawl cash, but won't use my bank card for purchases.

Anyone remember when VISA cards where a bit bigger than they are now?  I'm trying to figure out when they made the cards the size they are today.
