I hope you can help! If it weren't for my brother, I'd think I made this song up!
In the early days of MTV when they replayed the same 20 videos over and over, there was a song that went something like this:
"Jimmy john john john, where've you gone gone gone"...
Any ideas? Thanks!

That sounds like it could be "Jimmy Jones" by the UK band The Vapours. They were sort of punk/powerpop band of the early 80s, their biggest UK hit was "Turning Japanese".
I don't remember ever seeing a video for "Jimmy Jones" but the chorus of that song did go something like what you describe....
PS a bit of internet searching has revealed to me that they spelled the band name as "The Vapors" for the North American market.
