Subject: Out of Place

Written By: T on 06/27/03 at 11:53 p.m.

I'm I the only person 19 year old that remember the 80s. Sometimes I feel out of place with people my age because I remember wearing acid wash jeans; the days when I thought NBC, CBS, ABC and PBS were the only channels (plus having better shows); when "Dallas", "Dynasty" and "Knots Landing" was popular; when warming food in the oven not microwave oven was common; when K-mart was the Wal-mart of its day; when Burger King food tasted a lot better; and a lot of other stuff.

No. I'm also 19 and remember early FOX shows (21 Jump Street, Married...with Children, Tracy Ullman Show, & Arsenio Hall), Who's The Boss, toys (Teddy Ruxpin, He-Man...great hand me downs from older relatives, Cabbage Patch Kids, Popples, etc.) the music that blared from the radio (late '80's pop, hairbands, & hip hop) and being forced to watch MTV, when they actually played videos. And the fact Disney Channel was more classic movies, old shows, and classic cartoons. I only remember about TV and some music. Including MTV.

They're probably many others around our age that remembers the 1980's.

I think there's kinda a point where you can say you were a child of the 80's. For me, a birthyear of 1982 is that cut-off point, but if you had older siblings or you had parents that exposed you to alot of pop culture, then yeah, you'd know the 80's pretty well even if you were born in '83 or '84.

I am more a child of the early 90's/mid-90's, but I'm good at remembering politics and news events because I started watching them pretty early. When I made a reference to Tonya Harding, I was shocked no one got it, but then I realized that most kids my age weren't watching Dateline or 20/20 in 1994.

I remember responding to a guy called Jeremy in a very early thread and he felt very out of place and couldn't understand why he was out of synch with everybody else.

The best I can say is 'enjoy what you like'. Do not be pressured into doing or listening to something you don't want to do - what would be the point? You would have to keep the act up for as long as you keep the friends you are trying to impress.

Let them learn something from you.  :)

All my life, I have always identified with people who were older than I was. I finally realized why. I am the youngest of 6 kids-and I am one of the last of the baby boomers. Most people in "my generation" are older then I am-so when I make a reference to something-they usually understand it. Where someone from a younger generation wouldn't. I too, felt out-of-place for a long time. I always felt that I should have been born 5 years earlier than I really was. When I was with people who were older then I was, I felt like I was too young and they didn't want some kid hanging around them. If I hang out with younger kids, I just didn't click with them. Now, it really doesn't matter. I do connect with people of all ages.

I think people tend to become truly self concious of their surroundings around the age of 5 or 6.  Since I was born in 1975, that put it for me in the early 80's.  I've always felt like an 80's kid.  The 90's are a part of me too, but to a lesser degree.  I "grew up" in the 90's in a different way from the way I grew up in the 80's.

Now the 70's I do like, but honestly I only have the vaguest memory of the very late 70's.  MethodActor, good point about cut off points though.  It's the same deal with us born in the 70's.  People born in 1972 will talk about being a 70's kid, and I'm like---"huh?"  They're only 3 years older then me, but they seem to remember a lot more about the 70's then I do.  So I can understand why you born in 1985, can feel different from people born in 1982.

I think you can like whatever decade you want too though.  Even if you weren't really part of it or weren't even alive at the time.
