Subject: Most Successful Singer from an 80s Band?

Written By: Indy Gent on 06/19/03 at 07:13 p.m.

Sting, Lionel Richie, Steve Perry, Tommy Shaw, Lita Ford and Joan Jett from the Runaways? These are just a few of members of 80s bands to launch successful solo careers. IYO, who did you think made the biggest name for himself on his/her own?

I'd have to include George Michael in that list

I've got to agree with Boris regarding George Michael.  Successful in his own right with Wham!, but more hits as a solo artist.  If we stretch, we could add the King of Pop to this list, since The Jacksons did have some big hits in the 80's (ok, maybe not some and maybe not even one, but Victory was a big album...at the time)

I would definately say Phil Collins was the most sucessful, Peter Centara (Of Chicago), and Steve Winwood (Of Traffic & Blind Faith) come to mind.

Tommy Shaw?

I think I would have to add my personal favourite, Morrissey, formerly, of course, of The Smiths. OK, he's no Sting or Phil Collins in that he's had loads of hit singles, but I believe the pure fact that so many people still adore him after all these years makes him successful. He still has a very strong fan base, and never has...and I don't think ever will...lose popularity!! :D

Martin Plaza from the Australian group "Mental as Anything" had a few hits of his own as did Angry Anderson from "Rose Tattoo"

From an Australian perspective, I'd nominate Jimmy Barnes. He sold 3 million albums with Cold Chisel, then went on to sell 2 million as a solo artist, including six consecutive No. 1 albums, all of which topped the charts on the day of release. No other Australian artist (solo or otherwise) has done that.

Glen Danzig has had a pretty successful solo career after he left The Misfits and Samhain.

Belinda Carlisle also made it pretty big. To be honest, it's gotta be Michael Jackson - and strictly speaking, he was in 2 group before!!! :P

If we're going for strictly 80s bands, then it's porbs be Geroge Michael. 70's and 80s is would be a tie between Sting and MJ. But I chose Sting beacuse he get's more gorgeous as he gets older!!! ;D (For both artists, their music is very different, but equally good in their own right - so Sting's looks just pushed  him over the edge pour moi!!)

If we are just sticking to 80's groups then...Although her solo stuff was 90's, I would have to say I liked Annie Lennox better than her 80's stuff with the Eurythmics. George Michael would be up there too.  However,  IMO some of the best solo music in the 80's came from bands in other decades.  Peter Gabriel, Stevie Nicks, John Fogerty, Glen Frey and Don Henley, Kenny Loggins.

IMO, Phil Collins & Sting.

I would add Jody Whatley (Shalamar) and Belinda Carlisle (Go Go's) to that list.  I would say the most successful would be either Sting or Phil Collins.

I would say Phill Collins but Steve Perry's voice is unbelievable and I hear him, with Journey AND solo, on the radio all the time. "Oh Sherrie"is timeless, imo
