Go to http://cassette.by.ru/history/compactdisc.htm for info on the history of the CD. As far as cost, they may have been a few bucks cheaper than they sell for now as memory recalls. I listened to cassettes and albums before CDs.

In the 70's 8-track tapes were the form of music people used most, because it was the most portable medium. They could take in the car and to a friends house and play it on thier "HiFi" LOL. They other form was a vinyl record which carried over into the 80's and that is when the Cassette tape took over because it was considerably smaller. Up until the Compact Disc came out in the 80's the only forms you could buy "New" music was in the form of a Cassette or Vinyl record. Once the CD came out the vinyl record went extinct in record stores and record stores were no longer called record stores, they are now know as music stores. After the CD came out pretty much only 12" singles remained in stores for DJ's and avid vinyl lovers who wanted to collect the extended versions and still had turntables.
As for the price of a CD in the 80's what is now selling for $13 was about $19.99 - $21.99 what is now a "super saver" at $5.99 sold for about $11.99.
Do you know what it costs a record label to manufacture thes disc? Then about $1.50 now about .20 cents! if that and depending on quantity ordered.
