I liked Bette Davis Eyes the first time I heard it. I was in Bellingham, WA, and I liked the synthesized clapping sound and Kim's sexy sand-papery voice. Kim was hot and I might have dreamed about her a time or two! :P

I can't forget 1983's Michael Jackson's"Beat It" on the radio.I love when that song is played on almost every classic soul station on my radio. ;D :D

Booo-hooo-hooo.....
You just made me miss the 80's all over again for the first time today.
;) ;D
Gotta Love them 80's. 8)
Thanks for the memories, CeramicsFanatic.
Those tunes area all good and deserving of their #1 spot, even the slower ones which I was probably not as crazy about back then are good where they are.

You're welcome, Hairspray! ;)
Yes, it is sad that we can't bring those great days back. The 80's hold a lot of very fond memories for me, too.

I agree, with the exception of Whitney Houston. I'm sorry, I just could never tolerate her! And to think that she racked up so many #1's! Eeeeeek! >:(
Subject: Re: #1 Song On This Day Back In...
Ys, CF, some memories there, alright...
Hard to believe that some have bypassed the twenty year mark!
All were fairly substantial hits here too...but the one on the list that sticks out for me is Lionel's "Hello".
It was his only solo No1 here, for six straight weeks - helped, no doubt, by THAT video which (and I say this with tongue firmly in cheek) broke all known records for schmaltz!
All the best!

The Billboard charts were done weekly, so I doubt there would be much change if I were to post lists every day. I tend to do them about every few months, or when I remember. ;D

I can remember the early 80's pretty well. That was one of my faves during that time even for a 9 year old child like myself. But I am not 9,I am a 30 year old man who grew up enjoying that song. ;D :D

I equate that song to the screeching sound of nails on a chalkboard.
Subject: Re: #1 Song On This Day Back In...
I recall wondering how one could stand listening to an entire album of Kim Carnes' voice. Maybe with hearing protection?

I feel about the same with the Kim Carnes song. Her voice was definitely 'different'. :-/
Simple Minds had some great music and U2 also had some good songs, although I mainly prefer their pre-Joshua Tree work. :D

Lionel Richie had some neat songs in 1983 with "All Night Long" and "Can't Slow Down"."Hello"was a favorite of mine cause it was sweet. :) ;D

You know, a couple of days ago I saw the video for "Bette Davis Eyes" on VH1 Classic, and MAN does that song sound awful! Her voice sounds as if she's been smoking waaaay too many cigs & she looked a little cracked-out as well. I kinda put her in the same junk category as "Juice Newton", I can't stand either of them.

Presume you didn't listen to this song nor see the video in about '82. If you had, Kim would have looked and sounded better! ;D

I love Lionel Richie. "Hello" was a beautiful song. But the one I really liked was "Running with the Night." I started choragraphing a dance to that (but never finished-oh well.) Great song.

Merrilee Rush cut the original version much more soulfully than Juice.

I disagree about the "Bette Davis Eyes" video. I don't know about any of Kim Carnes' other material, but I find that particular one interesting, the song good and her voice as tolerable as Stevie Nick's. It's definitely nostalgic to me.
As for Juice Newton, I don't know about her other material, but "The Sweetest Thing" is a very good tune. Never seen a video.
All this of course, IMO. ;) :)

The only song that I really liked was Love's been a little bit hard on me. At that time I had just broken up from a relationship in highschool that I thought would last. :P I quickly got over it at the next party 8)

I've heard Merilee Rush's original version, and I still think Juice Newton's rendition is better. It's rare that I prefer a remake, but Juice just added a 'rock edge' to that song which I really liked! 8)

"Call Me" is an okay song, I'm not a big fan of Blondie.
"Bette Davis Eyes"--like most everyone else, I don't care for it much.
"Ebony and Ivory" is a great song! :D
"Beat It" is also a great song! Too bad he doesn't have stuff this good nowadays..
"Hello" by Lionel Richie is a good song, but I like some of his others better. I need to burn my parents' Lionel Richie greatest hits CD... :P
"Don't You Forget Me" is okay but I have heard it way too much :-/
"Greatest Love of All"--This was a #1 hit?? :-X
"With or Without You"--Like Lionel Richie, it's an okay song, I like U2's other 80s stuff better though.
"Anything For You"--Never heard that song ???
"I'll Be There For You"--Bon Jovi rocks!

I agree with most of your comments here, lebeiw! ;)
Here's how I'd rate the songs on a scale of 1-5 (with 5 being the best):
Call Me - Blondie 4 ("Heart Of Glass" is still my fav by this band)
Bette Davis Eyes - Kim Carnes 2
Ebony And Ivory - Paul McCartney & Stevie Wonder 5 (Anything that these two geniuses have done has been superb, IMO)
Beat It - Michael Jackson 4
Hello - Lionel Richie 4 (I think he has a great voice)
Don't You (Forget About Me) - Simple Minds 5
Greatest Love Of All - Whitney Houston 0 (Icky!!!)
With Or Without You - U2 4
Anything For You - Gloria Estefan & Miami Sound Machine 2 (I've never been a big fan of hers)
I'll Be There For You - Bon Jovi 2 (Sorry, Jonman!)

HS says it right, Betty Davis Eyes was an interesting song. When I first heard it, it was a cool sound, very New Wave and different. Kim Carnes kind of had a post Mary Anne Faithful voice, a little rough, worn, and tragic (maybe a bit persecuted to fit in with the Women's movement of the period). The synth melodies in the song were catching, and the electric claps, like breakers closing, created a cool beat. It's difficult to explain how the song sounded in '82 when I was a little bit punk, but at the time, it was new and different, and Kim was hot.
Juice Newton just wasn't my style, her name was hokey, and her sound was too sweetish for my taste. She had (has?) a nice voice, however. Just my opinion, she made it big, I'm still waiting.....
