"Is she really going out with him" what a great song in my life when I lived in Atlanta, GA and Meridian, MS in 1979-80!  That was a great album.

Remember, "Different for Girls"?  I think that was one of the prettiest songs ever. :)

Call me predictable, but I still like Steppin' Out

I loved Steppin Out, didn't remember it till you brought it up.  Lived in Seattle then and remember Steppin Out playing in the background, as my life took on many adventures.

I love Joe!  One of my bands used to end the night with "I'm The Man" which killed me being the drummer...trust me, by the end of the night drummers WANT to play a ballad...LOL!!

I really really really love Jumpin' Jive as well...I saw a concert on Cinemax one night in the 80s which was Jumpin' Jive Live and it was amazing!! What a band! I loved the sax player crossing the stage blowing a solo with a beer bottle balanced on his head... ;D

I like everything I've ever heard from Joe Jackson.  My favorite is probably "Steppin' Out".  I'm reminded of high school whenever I hear it!  :)

The only one I can think of at the moment is "Steppin' Out" and it's a great song.  I'll think of more later, probably...

Although popular over here in his own little way, I don't think the all-important media knew what to make of Joe - being as he was an artist who could turn his hand to several styles...

He'd crop up every now and then with a belter of a song which no-one could ignore...

I notice that "Steppin' Out" has had a few mentions, but I'd like to submit the follow-up "Breaking Us In Two" which (at the time) I predicted would be huge...says a lot for my predictions, as it spluttered to a paltry #59 here! Still a good song, though...I believe it done much better Stateside...

All the best, everyone!

I really liked "Something's going on around here" I could identify with it at the time it came out. (a girl that I though knew that I liked her started dating someone else :-/ )

I got to see JJ last month with the band in NYC.  It was fabulous.  I've seen him about 10 times over the years.  The best show I saw him do was at the Malibu nightclub in Lido Beach, NY  when he was workshopping material for the Laughter and Lust album.  It was a small venue, with a very small audience.  And I was standing right against the stage.

It's had for me to name a favorite song -- every album has standouts.  I remember the first time hearing One More Time thinking it was unlike anything I had ever heard before.  It was just so powerful and had a great energy.

I'm sure you all know, but Joe has re-united with his original band and have recorded a new album titled Volume 4.  There are some strong tracks on the album.  They're also touring.  They're in Europe currently, and they will be returning to the US late summer.  The schedule is on www.joejackson.com.

Hay, thanks for so much chat on JJ, he really touched a lot of souls and apparently still does!  Wish I could see him in a small venue but doubt if he'll be in Kentucky any time soon. He played in Seattle in '83 and they had a Joe Jackson look alike contest!

Remember "Another World"?  When I think of that song, I recall kayaking down the Duwamish River in Renton, WA. :)

Growing up, Joe Jackson to me was "Stepping Out".  Nowadays, I listen to his swing album, "Jumpin' Jive" quite a bit.  His cover of Louis Jordan's "5 Guys Named Moe" is a GREAT tune.  I'd suggest giving that a listen.

Hay JonMan, what kind of group(s) did you play in? If they did some JJ songs, must have had some versatility.  Were you in the band scene in the 80s or nowadays? In the UK, US? What else did you all play?URL

From hearing a lot of 'Steppin' Out' and 'Is She Really Going Out With Him?' I decided to download them both - they're both very familiar, I'm sure I've heard them before and not known who sang them.

Definitely "Steppin' Out"! That has to be on anyone's 80s list. I also like "Different For Girls" and "Is She Going Out With Him?"

I don't recall when or where I first heard them. I usually associate it with NY cab or limo rides on a cool night out.

I gotta tell ya, Joe can do no wrong in my book--however, the song that brings back the most memories for me is "On Your Radio."  When I was doing a college radio show in Colorado, that was my theme song....ahhhh...such wonderful memories of when radio was FUN!

"Don't you know you can't get near me, you can only hope to hear me...on your radio, on your radio...you're gonna hear me on your radio..."

Ktelchick, I couldn't agree more!  Radio is just so, so....commercialized now!  It's all about the $$, not the music any more.  Just sad.

It's funny you mention "On Your Radio", because that's my all-time favorite Joe Jackson song.  For all of my favorite bands (U2, The Police, The B-52's, The Cure, etc)., my favorite songs are their more obscure tunes, not the overplayed, top 40 songs.  Anyway, I was driving home just yesterday, and scanning through the radio stations.  I came upon the Rutgers University station (long live college radio!), and they were playing the live version of "On Your Radio", from Joe's new album with his original band.  It was awesome!  It was just one of those songs I hadn't heard in so long, and it brought back so many memories.  Now I have to go dig up my "I'm the Man" album, since I don't have that one on CD.

"Different for Girls" is also a great tune, very pretty, as bj26 mentioned.  I also like "You can't get what you want (till you know what you want)" and "Beat Crazy", two very jazzy songs of his.  He's truly a renaissance man!

I remember a couple of great stations in Denver (can't remember the call letters) and the CSU station was good also (1984 thru 1988).

Hay Katrina, Different for Girls may be about the most hypnotic song I have ever heard.  Couple of XTC songs and probably others that really do it for me, but DFG really makes me stop what I'm doing and get kind of a soulful feeling inside, I can't explain.

Kids today
theyre all the same
all call themselves
some crazy name

HEY!

mods & rockers  and Beatle freaks
punks & skunks and kooks and geeks
they look into the mirror but they cant see their face

All that noise they cant be sane
all those drugs
affect their brain.

from "Beat Crazy"
sorry I cant recall the rest of the lyrics, i havent listened to it in years

I first heard that album the night a good friend died in 1986.

Me and another friend sat in his bedroom playing albums and smoking Newports til dawn just trying to digest the days  horrible events
An awful night.  But we got thru it .  And Joe Jackson had a small walk on role.

In the back drops and props on the stage where we act out our lives, there is the music we remember...
Thanks for giving me this epiphany which brought forth a bit of poetry!
