Subject: 00's Bands with an '80's sound

Written By: The Skuz on 05/11/03 at 01:51 p.m.

Inspired partially by the thread about '90's band with an '80's sound(which I can no longer find), I thought I'd mention some band of the early 21st Century that sound like they're from the 1980's. Two that come to mind are Trapt(Headstrong) and Revis(Caught in the Rain). Mind you, they don't sound like '80's new-wave bands, but '80's bands that tried to add new-wave elements to their music to get people to listen.

Anyone know of any others?

Interpol actually sound a bit like The Smiths or Joy Division.  :D

Idlewild definitly have been influenced by the Smiths. Electric Sixs 'Danger' sounded kinda 80s too :]

I think Orgy's " Blue Monday" has an 80's sound.

I said this a while back in a similar thread, but I think Avril Lavigne sounds like 80s girl bands like the Go-Gos, especially "Sk8r Boi".

My 21 yr old nephew (who keeps trying to tell me that the 80s are finished and to move on!) tried to tell me that the only reason I like The Whitlams (an Aussie band) is that they sound like they come straight from the 80s.

I didn't agree with him - but I do like them so maybe he is right!

Yes, but this particular cover sounds like it's from the '80's. Anybody can cover an '80's tune and they don't necessarily have to sound like an '80's band. The same thing goes for any other era.

"We are all made of stars" by Moby (which came out last year). That song actually sounds like something from the 80s.  :)

Yeah, they are good.

There's also VNV Nation, De/Vision, Wolfsheim, and Ladytron (my personal fave).

I think T.A.T.U.'s "All The Things She Said" has an 80s sound to it. Not sure about their other songs though because I've never heard them.

Barenaked Ladies "Baby Seat" has an 80s sound.

The band Deadsy is VERY 80s metal-ish.

There's the Canadian bands The Dears and Hot Hot Heat. The Dears sound just like The Smiths, and Hot Hot Heat's lead singer sounds like Robert Smith from The Cure.

Coldplay has always reminded me of early U2 (circa. "Boy").

There was a group called, The Girls who did a song called "Earthquake Song" in 1983.  It's got like a bubblegum post punk sound.

Avril Lavigne's song "Skaterboy" sounds a lot like it.

"Don't Wanna Try" by Franike J sounds like "Tender Lover" by Force MD's a little bit.

I'll sgree about "Ska8terBoy" by Avril Lavigne sounding a little 80's.

"Dreamin In Digital" by Orgy that came out a few years ago as a radio single sounded 80's.

"Island In The Sun" by Weezer may not have sounded 80's but kind of gave you that fun feeling that 80's music had.

as mentioned by some already (some are late 90's groups):

Interpol = sounds like joy division/early post-punk The Cure....on some songs the vocals remind me of David Byrne of talking heads and Echo & the Bunnymen

Deadsy - subtract the nu-metal riffs and it's a dead on new wave album. they did a cover of Tom Sawyer by Rush complete in all it's synth cheesiness.

Dubstar - right down to the lyrics. it also helps that Stephen Hague (Pet Shop Boys, New Order circa mid-late 80s) is their producer

Eve's Plum - mid 90's band that actually split up, lead singer went solo and is now known as Vitamin C. they were always compared to Blondie.

The Donnas.

Hay Skuz, just went to a local dance club and thought the live band was blase' until they played Suddenly Last Summer by the Motels.  They did the song great, so I asked a lady to dance, and she about squeezed me to death!

Well, I know that this subject is directed at New Wave, but as a die hard Melodic Rocker, there is one 00s band out there that sounds more 80s than anything else I've heard since 92:

"Damned Nation"! Their "Road of Desire" CD kicks ass! The band is from Sweden and they sound like a cross between Y&T and Whitesnake. It's an import so you can't find it in your typical music store, but you can order it from Dreamdisc.com for about $18.00 (about half the price of cduniverse or cdnow).

But don't wast your dollars on their "Grand Design" or the OOP "Just what the doctor ordered" CDs; they both suck!

i agree about the Donnas they just dont do it very well.

Sum41 sort of has an 80s power metal sound(but not as much in the singing, unless you count Pain for Pleasure)but its there in the guitar playing.

and AFI's current song "Girls Not Grey" has an 80ish sound

Well, first off, let me say that I always thought John Mayer's 'No such thing' sounded so much like 'My ever-changing mood', but there are two other recent songs that have such an 80's sound to them (albeit not new wave):

Natalie Imbruglia "Torn"
Michelle Branch & Santana "Little bit of this..."

I don't know they both sound like something Belinda Carlile and Cimie Fisher (remember "Love Changes Everything" around '88?) might have collaborated on!  Am I the only one to hear it?

EXACTLY! she is gorgeous and so nice to the fans! the whole band is awesome, they are perfect live.
The Sounds it's a bit of Blondie/missing persons/transvision vamp/kim wilde, well it's certainly totally 80s influenced but with a new sound.
Another great band is "MELODY CLUB", a mix of Bolshoi/Psychedelic Furs with more synths.
Other 00's bands that reminds of the 80's could be:
THE FAINT
LADYTRON
ZOOT WOMAN
SURFEROSA
ELEGANT MACHINERY

just to name a few. But i really adore The Sounds, mainly because now they are getting so popular and it means that there is a market for 80's influenced bands, people still like this sort of music, that's just great 8)

Fountains of Wayne !

These guys borrow liberally from a few styles and eras, but mostly have an 80s pop sensibility.  Their new single "Stacy's Mom" is definitely an homage to the Cars.

We highly recommend their new album "Welcome Interstate Managers" as well as their '99 release "Utopia Parkway."

They are critics' darlings AND happen to write very accessible tunes.  They have a great sense of humor.  Those who are from the New York metro area will particularly get a kick out of all the local references.
