Subject: I like the 80's, but i'm only 15 years old.

Written By: Jeremy on 05/03/03 at 12:56 a.m.

You know, I recently (within the last 5 months) realized that the the 80's culture was over. I had not really known anything about the mainstream culture until then. I didn't even realize that the teenagers from the 80's were in their 30's now. I listen to things like Duran Duran, Queen, Huey Lewis & The News, and watched Back to The Future, Star Wars, Short Circuit, Superman II, and so on. I was very shocked to learn that people my age don't like these things, but wear strange clothes, and listen to bad music, such as Good Charlott, Eminem, etc. I was even more shocked by the fact that most of the people who liked the things I liked weren't teenagers anymore. I am disgusted by most of the things that my generation likes, and even the way they think.

What does that make me?

Welcome to the boards Jeremy! When you get a chance, get registered!  :) I can sympathize with you, I have a niece who is 16, and ever since she took piano lessons seems to be hooked on classicle and ragtime jazz. She hardly listens to pop radio.

Ugghh....Don't remind me that 80's teenagers are in their 30's.  I was born in 1977.  I'm 26 years old and not much younger then a lot of 80's teens....well the Late 80's teens anyway.

I don't think you should worry about what your peers think.  Just tell them you are very retro and leave it at that.  10 years ago back in 1993 I was about your age and I was really getting into the 70's.  Despite the 70's revival of the 90's not many people my age wanted to get into it.  I would tell them I was very retro.  Anyway who cares what other people think?  Just do your thing and be happy.  The 90's are already ancient history and the Early 00's are almost yesterday's news.  So nothing stays hip and current forever.

im 31 but act 15 still...it could be sad if you knew that without a quick look at the 80's. I grew my hair long ,like so many of the metal bands and i played guitar in several "happeni'ng" bands in the chicago area. There was only 2 "cache's" of teens then ..your preps and everybody else. the music then was alot more powerful than it is today...it was nothing to go to a concert by one band that could draw over 100,000 people. today your lucky to hit 30,000 with more than one headliner. i have been to over 160 concerts and by far i miss those days. today i hit the small clubs and outside arenas in local towns to see those once huge headliners. in skullbone tn. frampton played to a crowd of 20,000... i know frampton was huge in the 70's but i think he still is awesome...i still have long hair and play guitar, i finally had a song on a local station in chicago...and i still listen to 80's music, my fiance' shes the same...the funny thing is we both act like we did in high school...so does being a teen in the eighties have any affect on us today? i think so we act as young and immature as we did back then, and still we have kick a@S careers.

I can also relate to the person who started this post everyone today hates the 80's but tons of songs i've heard have been 80's songs with new Lyrics like Alica Keys "Juciest" which is a rip off of Mtumes "Juicy Fruit" also tons of my sisters rap has little peices from Grandmaster Flash songs and such.

Well I can completly sympathise with you Jermey. I too am a teenager and love the 80s. I'm only 18 and have been obsessed like you since I was about 15. That's not to say that I odn't like some new music, I do, but not all that much! I listen to manily indie music, and a little dance/r&b/pop (gotta love Justin Timberlake ;D). I hardly listen to the radio, and when I put music TV on, it's usually VH1 Classic. It's also great to see lots of '80s Days' and nostalgia documentaries on VH1.

The 80s were so much cooler - well the music was, and I guess some of the films and fashion were to. It's amzing to see a lot of 80s clothes being revived at the moment. There is most definitly an 80s revival going on, everyone knows how many 80s covers and samples there have been of late. Although I hate most of the covers (apart from err AAF's 'Smooth Criminal and a coule others!) but it's great to see some 80s culture in the present day :)

(Btw - I seem to be mentioning Justin a lot more than I do The Smiths these days - arghh - what's happeing to me!!! ;D)

Hi Jeremy, I think you are in a cultural minority today, same as a lot of people were who loved the New Wave of the 80s.  Much of the 80s New Wave was still a sub culture that evolved from what was coined as "Punk" a few years earlier.  The New Wave was the commercialized and more acceptable offshoot of the Punk culture.  There was a very small minority of Punks in the 70s but the New Wave started to pick up in the 80s, however it was still not mainstream.  Someone please help me, think I'm on to something!

I can sympathize with Jeremy and Criz as well, although I'm a lil older (I'm 200) 80s music is my fave although I do love lots of stuff from the 60s and 70s as well. When I turn on the radio it's usually an oldies or 80s station. When I watch TV it's usually to see old sitcoms on Nick At Night and TV Land. I don't even bother with MTV anymore and I'm completely jealous of anyone who has VH1 Classic! I think pop culture today sucks. I watched VH1's I Love The 80s series and more exciting things happened in 1984 than all of the 2000s so far.

Hey, Jeremy! How nice it was to see this post...since I'm fifteen too and I definitely know what you're feeling, since the current pop culture does not appeal to me at all. (So I dive into underground/older rock and refuse to be dragged ashore.)

I often wish I lived in London during either the '70s or the '80s, but life is like that -- sometimes you don't luck out. :( Instead of trying to fit in with all the Good Charlotte fans, be proud of the fact that you're an individual.

...or better yet, do your friends a favor and try to convert them slooowly and cautiously into '80s fiends...get them to watch "Donnie Darko"...make them a mix-tape... It should work eventually. ;)

Hi there, Jeremy (and everyone else!)

I went through this scenario just before the 1980's hit. Remember it vividly. I was visiting a relative with my folks and this relative was a real 60's child. Never quite moved on! Anyway, whilst we were there, she had this LP (remember them?!) playing - not full blast, but enough for my ears to prick up to...

Song after song on this album would pour out and I was just enraptured...the album? "Please Please Me" by the Beatles (their first UK album, which differs from the first US).

And that was that - Beatles overkill thereafter! Some kids at school, at the time Lennon was murdered (not long after), were thinking I'd go into some sort of mourning! (I did, sort of...but that's another story!)

But the seeds were sown for my love of anything in a "popular music" vein. I would find myself visiting countless eras and genres just to satisfy, I suppose, a curiosity - "Was it really that good/bad/whatever?" I've got a collection nowadays going back some 50-60 years!

But, at the end of the cliche, I derived a colossal amount of enjoyment out of it all - which (after all this rambling!) is the point I'm endeavouring to make.

I wouldn't fret yourself about what your peers may think - just concentrate on what makes you happy (as long as it's not illegal!)

Being interested in the past is nothing to be ashamed of...

Just as long as you don't start living in it!

All the best!

Anyway...I'm one of those thirtysomething 80's people and I think it's fantastic that there are some teenagers today who dig the 80's. I admire your taste!! The music is a lot better than what's being put out these days. It's the last decade, I think, where originality made it to the forefront. Nowadays, it just seems like a rehashment of the same bloody things over and over and over again. Waaaaaaayyyy too many soundalikes.

Lol! I only have one Justin poster, and it's been up on my wall for about 4 years ;D I kinda have the 'school girl crush' on him - he's gorgeous ;D But could Justin make anything remotely close to the brilliance that is the lyrics of The Smiths - I think not. You cannot compare the Smiths to any other ban. Although 'Idlewild' are getting quite close up there in my estimations - they're very, very good!

Hi everyone that's involved with this topic (especially Jeremy).

It's a shame that people have to be afraid of admitting they like older things in general, not just the 80s so it takes guts for a young person to come out with such a statement.

I'm 24 and the fear I had before entering the forum (this is my first one) was that everybody here would be far older than I am (no offence at all intended to the older members - these people are the 'pillars of this forum'). I find this to be far from the truth and it's reassuring.

I'm from Britain so this may, or may not, make much sense to people outside. I got a right ribbing (teased) from people at work when I openly admitted to loving 80s music but some of these people were liking 'Uptown Girl' by Westlife (Billy Joel), 'Tainted love' by Marilyn Manson(Soft cell) and Tupac's 'Changes' (sample from Bruce Hornsby's 'The way it is').

In terms of music, the irony is that I don't think I know of a decade that is so similar to the eighties and yet so removed from it. Rap artists especially borrow heavily from the 80s and one so called artist (Coolio) even sampled 'Pachelbel's Canon' (a classical piece in the true sense of the word). The sad fact in all this is that younger people do not look beyond what is put in front of them - Jeremy obviously does.

It may appear that I've gone off on one but I'll leave with this quote that I've hopefully made up myself; "Can you enjoy the scenery fully if you are looking straight ahead?"

Cheers

Bobby.

I miss the 80's but I would never want to live  back then again. If you were a freak of any kind you would get jumped just for walking down the street. That happened to me twice. If I wasn't afraid of standing up for myself then I probably would have gotten beat down. It wasn't all fun for everybody.....

It makes you a very cool person. People should apprecaite many different things, different movies, genres of music. It's good to be open minded, compared to the majority of teenagers who can't stand a lot of older music. It's good know your stuff. I think perhaps when people start hitting 18,19 they start to appreciate past music more -thats what I've witnessed. I was an early starter as I've kinda always loved the 80s :) 80s night at our local club is always rammed! And generally the people who go there are either slightly underage, or 18,19,20 ish.

Hey Jeremy I like you already!  :-*
I think you should just keep up and like your own thing not matter what the other teens are into nowadays. Be original, individual, don't follow the crowd. I feel sorry for the kids and teens of this early decade, majority just listen to rubbish and dress awfully, they all look the same, uniforms.. boring ones.

Anyway, i have good news for you. Not all the people that loves the 80s are grannies! I was born in 77 and I'm 26, my sister is only 22... i disgress, the good news is that there is a new movement, totally nostalgic yet futuristic, is called ELECTROCLASH. There are a bunch of great young people that love this style, 16 years old girls and boys, 18... and above (including we the aunties :)  )  You just gotta try to find these people, stick with them. They have a great sense of 80s inspired fashion (the girls are sooooo hot! and the girls dig the fashion as well) and very electronic 80s music, but with new elements. This wave came from Germany, but is very strong in USA, you just have to research more about it. Maybe you are a bit too young to get into the clubs (sorry
:(  )   but there are also clubs that have 80's nights that are open to any age, i guess. Try the goth crowd too, they know and like the 80s, you may be surprised, many of them are very young.

for more about Electroclash here is a short description:

electroclash is pretty much synth/electronic music with a nostalgic touch (think Kraftwerk, Front242, A Split Second, Depeche Mode, Duran Duran, etc and other synth 80's bands ) and some rock/punk influences (Blondie and more). A few examples are new bands such as Ladytron, FisherSpooner, Zoot Woman, Miss Kitten, Hungry Wives, Chicks on Speed, Adult, Peaches, W.I.T., Soviet, Mono Trona, etc they sound like a mix of New Wave and new Techno. The name electroclash came from Williamsburg, Brooklyn's
Club Luxx, this scene is from Berlin originally
check http://electroclash.com

Don't feel hopeless about being different, there are other people that like the same stuff you do like and are in the same age range. Stick with us too :)

take care!

What does that make me?

oh no doubt about it... most of the new rap or hiphop bands sample loads of tunes from the 80s. LOADS! they rip off from great 80s stuff such as Public Enemy, grandmaster flash rhythms just like you mentioned, and the breakdancin'.

This is kinda embarassing but there is a video of Justin Timberlake where he is trying to be a wanna be Michael Jacson, even the hat... the dance steps, very very breakdance looking. Oh and wherever he goes now he wears those 80's type of gloves showing the fingers with black & white stripes. Another 'new act' that has a very fashionable rip off from the 80s is No Doubt, Gwen steffani seem to have stolen Madonna's 80s wardrobe... sometimes...

And now kELLY osbourne. Some of her songs from the new album is So SO (my opinion here, in despite that i really dig her!) but she is totally retro 80's looking! vintage stores rocks!

I can also relate to the person who started this post everyone today hates the 80's but tons of songs i've heard have been 80's songs with new Lyrics like Alica Keys "Juciest" which is a rip off of Mtumes "Juicy Fruit" also tons of my sisters rap has little peices from Grandmaster Flash songs and such.

hey guys.. sorry for some many posts... no i'm not manic, i just loved this thread   ;)

Babysinister, try to make your future now, don't think how could would be if you lived in London in the late 70s and the 80s... you know, I try to make my own little world, yeah i'm stucked in the 80s, people kinda think i'm a freak because of my looks, the music i like, movies, toys, videogames, nearly everything kinda make them confused. Most people my age (26) here in Norway listen to garbage music and they biggest ambition is to dress with brow/gray colors in known fancy schamcy designer clothes. Yeah i'm a lunatic for customizing my own clothes, buy them from second-hand stores etc. MY HAIR? Oh my god, how can i have this hair while everyone else my age is so darn straight and copycats.
But i don't care... i try to make the best out of my situation, actually there are some people like me out there, my age, younger and so on. So try to do what you like here and now... would be great to live in london in the 80s right? but just few years ago i was there in walking nearby the kensington markets and i saw so many punks/goth and new wave people! So i loved your idea about Donnie Darko (PERFECT movie! have in dvd, totally worth it), people eventually will get interested about the 80s... or at least respect our choice. You just need to have guts to stick to what you believe and don't care if you're an outsider  :-*

It should work eventually. ;)

The Smiths come pretty darn close to Depeche Mode :D ! And they can be compared to Suede and Kent (as well as Idlewild).

Kent rocked, 2 years ago. They were so innovative, 80s influence here and there. Now there are 70s :(
flower power... the vocal dyed her hair black... the guitar player looks totally 70s. They are in decadence.
Now the great swedish bands are Melody Club (think a revamped Psychedelic Furs) and The Sounds (Blondie/Kim Wilde!), i recommend these :)

My birthday was this May just gone. I am 24 and never been to a concert before my last birthday. Do you know what my first concert was? Erasure - and it was absolutely brilliant!  ;D

Honesty was always my down point, Mr Crowly!  ;D

The Erasure concert happened last month for my birthday. I have never been to a concert before that.

They got through a lot of stuff. My favourite songs have got to be 'Ship of fools','Stop','Sometimes' and 'Oh L'amour'.

My mega-favourite was 'Reunion' but they didn't get to play it.

Just turned 28 in June and their ain't nothin' better than the 80's. Everything was cool and simple. I think it's kind of funny that the 80's styles are starting to come back, at least in here in Maine that is.
