Subject: Great White gig was a rip off!!
I paid $40.00 for 2 tickets to see my favorite Rock band Great White (plus $6.00 parking and missing a half night of work), and what did I get? SCREWED! I wasted 4 hours standing (no seats at the Key club) listening to 5 previous bands that totally sucked! Even XYZ sounded washed up. Thank God I brought earplugs!
So then, at 12:00 am the final moment arived; Great White was to preform next. There were two chairs set in front of the stage with microphones set up in front of them. Then came Jack Russell and Mark Kendall (since when did that dude decide to shave that gourd? As if he wasn't ugly enough!) sat in the chairs while Jack lamented (with feigned tears) over the loss of life at Rhode Island.
Then they played one lame tune from their Sail Away album, and that was it. I expected the whole band to race on stage and jam some real tunes like Step on you, Out of the night, All over now, face day, or at least Rock me. But hell no! Just one tune and they split!
We didn't even stick around to see the last Metal wanabe band that was to play next because we just couldn't handle anymore dissapointment.
I love Great White's music, they're still my favorite Rock band. But a word to the wise: If Great White comes to your town, don't wast your money. Just stay at home and watch T.V. or something. I just don't want to see another Rocker get burned!

Was that the show that was meant to be the benefit for Ty Longley's family? Under the circumstances, I'm surprised that Russell and Kendall are playing anything at all.

I'm also surprised that they would perform so soon after the horrible tragedy in Rhode Island...even if it was to raise money for their late guitarist's foundation. :(

if i lived in california ,i would have went,-alas i live as far east in the states you can get-north carolina beach! so i was hoping to actually hear how this went from somebody who went. i think your time and support of the band is greatly appreciated by just buying a ticket to support the cause. however i think that i would feel as ill as you do. your first hand account of what has happened is stunning! they had plenty of fanfare noting this benefit. vh1, mtv ..etc.I feel that they had the outlet to actually turn this in too one of the best shows out there. however it left people more shocked then the tragedy in rhode island. the the tragedy in R.I. sadens many people,it was an accident. and my heart goes out to the people who lost loved ones and to the friends and family whos left with heartache. ..but..i think it should have been a little more grand than this... apprenetly they didint think this out.

One of our local network affiliates reported last week that this would be "the last" Great White gig... (and I was assuming, "the last, ever".) Anyone else heard this?
Subject: Re: Great White gig was a rip off!!
heard it on fox news last week...and on cnn it was on the bottom of the screen.

Granted; the Great White gig (along with the other bands playing that night) was advertised as "all proceeds going to the Ty Longly fund".
But when I heard that Great White was playing on the 29th, and saw the group name "Great White" in full caps printed on my tickets, this gave me the impression of two things:
1) That the band Great White would perform as a band, as opposed to the idea of only having Jack & Mark appear on stage.
2) That this would be a gig worth paying $20.00 a ticket for. Call me crazy but I expected to hear at least 4 tunes (peferably classics like Rock me, Lady Red light, Face the day,...etc.) for my money.
Basically what I'm pissed off about is that this was a clear case of false advertisment just to get the fans out and fool them into thinking that this was something other than a very brief appearance to a charity event by the two founding members of G.W. who clearly want to somehow keep their asses out of hot water. The motive was transparent: "Look, we're doing something good. We care deeply about the tragic consequences (of their carelesness and irresponsibility) of our Rhode Island gig. Please Mr. District attourney; Don't throw our asses in the slammer!"
And to kill the 2nd bird with the same stone they got the positive media exposure that Jack and Mark so desperately covet.
Oh but a 3rd bird got hit when a handful of sorry ass bands did the real performing to promote their crap.
I know; this all sounds negative and mean spirited. But I got deceived and ripped off, and I'm still mad as hell about it!
Should Great White even do gigs in wake of what happened in Rhode Island? I think so. Why not? Unless Jack & Mark are going to the big house for manslaughter, they need to go on making a living and Rock and Roll performers is their profession. It would be one tragedy on top of another to expect these guys to work at Wal-Mart for the rest of their lives when they could do much better pleasing their fans and doing what they love in the process. Ty of all people would have wanted it that way.

By the way, I was curious about something: Why was Ty Longly playing leads when he performed with Great White? It's not like G.W. tunes demand dueling leads like those from the Scorpions or Judas Priest. Why didn't he just play rythem?
After seing Mark play that night, I'm getting the sneeking suspicion that there is something not right. Kendall seemed to struggle with the very simple chord picking (no lead riffs) when they did that one tune that night, like he was extremely hung over or something.
No, I'm not trying to spread rumours or anything. I'm just thinking out loud. I wonder if the bald head, dark shades and frailness I saw that night had anything to do with a battle with cancer. Or maybe even Alsheimers (As I recall, he didn't say a word that night). Again, just wondering.
And perhaps the reason only Jack and Mark appeared without the rest of the band is because they are broke. Who knows?

Well, from what I'd read beforehand, and what was posted at MTV.com:
"Great White will perform one song at an April 29 benefit at the Key Club in West Hollywood for the Ty Longley Memorial Fund. The fund, established by Longley's parents, will provide financial assistance to the late guitarist's unborn child, victim relief funds and students seeking art scholarships."
They only PLANNED on playing one song. Don't know why no one but Jack and Mark played, though.

Officially, Jack and Mark ARE Great White. Anyone else in the band is a hired gun. After the original line-up split in the late 90s, the band's official name became Jack Russell's Great White, so in reality Russell could turn up alone and call it a Great White gig.

Thundervamp9: Oh if only I received that info before I wasted $40. dollars on the tickets! Unfortunately I wasn't given that info when I was told on this message board that Great White was playing at the Key Club on the 29th.
I picked up an "L.A. Weekly" newspaper to get the concert, ticket and address info and there was no mention in the ad that there would be only one song played by only two performers. And of course there was no such info printed on the tickets.
Goreripper: "Technically speaking" David Lee Roth could show up a solo act if he wanted to but wouldn't that be a dissappointment? Wouldn't that also be a rip-off? That's no way to please a fan base.
