Subject: NO NAME/ECONOMY BRANDS.
Ahh.the white box with black, institutional labeling..Anyone remember this?? As a kid we had this stuff all the time! The best was the 2 lb box of those chocolate/vanilla cream centered cookies. I always thought they'd eventually make EVERY consumable product in that manner. I could picture going to buy my first car and it would be a big white box, no radio, heat, AC, gauges..and would just say "CAR" in big black letters on the side. Luckily they seemed to fade before I was old enough to drive. I do remember a no-name beer..came in 12 oz 6pk cans I beleive. I was not old enough to drink in the 80s..but had a feeling that it was probably pretty bad beer!

Here the packaging was yellow with black lettering...english on one side and french on the other...I also used to picture buying a vehicle...yellow...said CAR on one side and L'AUTO on the other LOL....we had beer just called BEER...came in a plain brown box and had a plain brown label...tasted like sh!t LOL

I remember in the early 80's having mac n cheese in the white box with black lettering. Nowadays the stores actually have a bit of packaging with some color for their own 'generic' brands.

I remember those but I don't think we bought any. A few years ago we have used a sunscreen called "No Name" I don't know if that was from the same company or not.

Come to think of it..there is Natural Light...maybe thats what the no-name tasted like. I have had Pabst which seems to have lost popularity..I kinda like it.
Jonman..are you from Canada?? When I was in Canada I saw the yellow/black..of course bilingual (and of course in metric!)

I use "No-Ad" sunscreen. I'm sure it's pretty much the same thing. It's cheap; it works... ;)

Schlitz isn't too bad either. A bar in my hometown that closed down a couple years ago would sell that beer for 2 bucks a can. After awhile, I stopped drinking Coronas and starting drinking Schlitz. Odd, I know, but it was the only bar in town where you could drink it, so that I did. Plus, it was always fun to say to the bartender, "hey that Schlitz stuff sure is the sh!t!" :D
When I think of no name/economy brands though, shoes are always the first thing that comes to mind. To be more specific, Zips and Pro Wings.

Yes, Ive always wondered what happened to generic products. At one time they were so popular that some supermarkets dedicated an entire aisle to them.
I remember that my dad and I found out that generic beer was in fact Iron City Beer brewed in Pittsburgh.

Wasn't that generic thing late 70's early 80s? I remember beer and some others things packaged that way. I recall the late 80's as becoming more brand and lable concious. I tried to fine a pull over sweater type thing and looked at every store in the mall for one that didn't have the manufactures name or lable across the front of it.
Probably the downfall of generic was that packaging became cheaper, the advance in computerized technology and materials made it obsolete.
And to Funky Fresh, did you ever get "Shlitz Faced" drinking that beer. ;D

There are still bars around me that sell all brands for $2 a bottle or can. ;D
I remember the packaging here being yellow/black too. The potato chips were the best!!! Oh, and my brother collects beer cans and he has some full ones of "Beer".

I remember that stuff... the peanut butter was awful!! I can remember the veggies often having stems or bits of leaves in the can too.

A cult-movie that really plays on the generic packaging is "Repo Man." It's worth watching at least once if you've never seen it.
I'm not that picky about food, but I ate "TUNA" once and swore I'd never buy another generic product again.

Back in the days of college, when my friends and I decided to play Beer Wars or Quarters, etc, we would buy Fatty Nattys (Natural Light) for the ritual, as we knew we would go through cases and we were relatively poor.
To this day I look at a Fatty and I cringe! ;D

Absolutely; this was when the "generic" stuff was 1st coming out. No1 bothered to make labels. Now the "generic" is special for every store/conglomerate. e.g., Safeway and Stop&Shop both had "Select" "brand" w/fancy labels to make it look like the top market brand. But in the old days, it was all boring black-on-white no matter what food it was!

I lived in the Miami area, but "No Frills" sounds familiar...although as far back as I remember, store brands/generic brands always had some color to them.
