Subject: The best year of the Eighties?
URL
I think 1987, The year of the lost boys
or 85 the year of my birth
these are pretty CRAP reasons. I've discoverd one can use the word crap here, a very descriptive and lazy term for a lot of things. HOw aBouT a Poll/voTe for best year with reasons coz i dont really know
Subject: Re: The best year of the Eighties?
Musically, I'd have to go with 1985! 8)
Crap-wise, I'd go with 1989. ;D
Subject: Re: The best year of the Eighties?
Musically: 1983, 1984, & 1987. :D
I actually dislike 1980. Only because some bad '70's acts (Captain & Teneille, KC & The Sunshine Band) and disco ("Funky Town") were still in the charts.
And the only great acts, in my opinion, were rock & new wave artists.
Atleast in 1989, hair bands still roamed the charts with Debbie Gibson, Tone Loc, Tom Petty, Depeche Mode, Paula Abdul, The Cure, (don't ask) Milli Vanilli, to name a few.
(Though I dislike New Kids On The Block & Richard Marx)
Every year had it's share of bad acts/artists.

Clearly 1984, a great year for music, and for enough from the 70's that everyone had let them go and before the era of faux heavy metal and power ballads.

89 wasn't that bad: The Cure were an above average band. Depeche Mode was nice. Tone Loc had that "Funky Cold Medina" song. Richard Marx you could either take or leave. Didn't R&B Group Surface have big hits "Shower Me With Your Love" and "For The First Time" in 1989? Those were nice R&B songs. Red Hot Chilli Peppers had a hit with "Higher Ground" in 1989. Alternative rock band Living Colour had a hit in 89 with "Cult of Personality" If i'm not mistaken. I also liked "Dreamin Of Love" by Stevie B too. Didn't Jody Watley have some good songs in 89 too? She was a good singer.
I'll agree 83, 84, and 87 were good. I would have to include 88 in there too. Gloria Estefan/Miami Sound Machine were around 88. Terrance Trent D' Arby was good too in 88. George Harrison had a hit song in 88 with "I Got My Mind Set On You". Getta Outta, My Dreams Get Into My Car" and "Colour of Love" by Billy Ocean I liked too. "Seasons Change" by Expose was a nice pop song. Taylor Dayne had alot of hit songs in 88 too.

I've always said that 1987 was the year that a lot of 80's bands (i.e. U2, INXS, etc.) released a good album, and then it was all downhill from there. It's not entirely true anymore since U2's new album seems rather good, and Depeche Mode's "Violator" album (1990) is good as well. (I won't go into INXS because we all know what happened there. <sniffle>) :-[
Most of the stuff I seem to listen to these days are from the early to mid 80's. That's when a lot of good new wave/new romantic stuff was around. :)
Absolutely Vile

Definitely, without a doubt, hands down....1983! I was 19 years old, taking a year off before starting college, hanging out with my friends, and there was so much great music out! We had just gotten MTV, and one of the biggest radio stations in NYC, which had previously played only album rock, went new wave. I was in heaven!
Just saying the word "1983" can bring me back!
Subject: Re: The best year of the Eighties?
1984 defined the 80's. Nearly everyone that was big in the 80's charted that year.
If you weren't around for 1984, then you never really knew the 80's. The years surrounding 1984, like 1983 and 1985, were very good too.
Subject: Re: The best year of the Eighties?

I wouldn't say that...
:D INXS, The Cure, U2, Prince, Depeche Mode, REM, Whitesnake, & Michael Jackson put out great albums.
Guns N' Roses,Taylor Dayne,Salt N' Pepa,Public Enemy,& Debbie Gibson came into the scene.
Aerosmith released their "comeback" album.
Not to mention artists like Beastie Boys, George Michael, L L Cool J, Motley Crue, Bon Jovi, Samantha Fox, They Might Be Giants, Madonna, Poison, 10,000 Maniacs, Jody Watley, Lisa Lisa & Cult Jam, and Heart. :D
...in 1987.
Not to forget "Married...with Children" & "The Tracy Ullman Show".

Subject: Re: The best year of the Eighties?
For me, probably 1989 because 1) I was too young to remember most of the 80s and 2) there were some pretty good movies that year...Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade...Batman Forever and Lethal Weapon II were some of the best movies of that era. The Simpsons also debuted late that year too (although some argue that it really did not begin until January 1990, since the December 1989 episode was a Christmas special)
But a lot of good things happened to me that year...it was a really fun time to be a kid.
Subject: Re: The best year of the Eighties?
1984 was THE year of the eighties. Lots of great music, and the fantastic L.A. Olympics!
Subject: Re: The best year of the Eighties?
NINETEEN EIGHTY THREE!!
But Eighty-Four was good too...got my first kiss then...song "Save A Prayer" was playing...and the boy who kissed me looked like Simon LeBon (*I thought*)....
eighty-five was also a VERY good year. After that, things seemed to slide downhill.
Subject: Re: The best year of the Eighties?
1985 is my favorite 80s year for movies,with 1989 coming in 2nd.
